Hey Gizmodo!!! Are you people brain dead?!? THIS must be what Apple will introduce at their music event along with COCKTAIL! With all the photos and accompany materials! Forget the new iPods, this will make Beatles fanboys cream in their pants.
I'll stand next to 'that guy', and be even thatter - someday question arise in a group of people: What would you do if you could take one trip to past and DO something? Mostly the answers were: go back and give myself lottery numbers. I quietly said: I would go back and rip off hands of each and every Beatle, so they can NEVER play!
They could write music. But not play it. There.
@bitgod: In some cases, the difference is minimal. But others—especially "Sgt Pepper" and the "White Album"—have dramatically different mono and stereo mixes.
Technically speaking, the mono mixes are considered the 'preferred' versions, as those were the mixes the Beatles and George Martin oversaw. Stereo was still something of a new concept (and considered by some to be a fad), so stereo mixing was typically handed over to a lower-level engineer.
Only "Abbey Road" and "Let it Be" (and "Revolution 9" on the "White Album") were mixed primarily for stereo. "Mono" versions of those albums were just mix-downs of the stereo tracks.
@ophmarketing: One should say "Historically speaking", as opposed to "Technically" at this point. The Stereo mixes are all new, and were done because they thought they had the technology and technique to do a stereo remix "right", whereas before the stereo mixes were technically deficient for the reasons that you stated.
Where is the white album? Don't flame me if it's in the past masters thing, I'm not completely knowing of the beatles. But I do love their music. This is on the Christmas List. At $180 it's affordable.
Am I stuck in some kind of time warp? These were announced way back in April. The limited edition Mono Box Set is already sold out in most places. Amazon has the Stereo Box Set for $179.99.
@Galley: Instructions on how to escape the time warp: It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right

@danger the pirate (now with google voice!): Please go back and listen to what pop music sounded like before the Beatles and compare it to what came after. Then tell me what band changed music as much as they did. Or maybe you don't hear the difference between Fabian and the Fab Five?
I'm not the biggest Beatle fan around, but I like the music and recognize their influence on society and music itself. If not an admirer of the band you have to admire what they did to shape the direction of music. If you listen to their sound as it progresses over time you will hear it go from simple monophonic sounds to very complex, multi-layered, polyphonic sounds. Listen to Love Me Do then compare it to Penny Lane, Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Fields, etc. to get an idea of what I'm talking about. They probably had the greatest influence on what we consider modern music.
@danger the pirate (now with google voice!): In 1000 years, if humans still inhabit the Earth, they will still be listening to the Beatles. Not too many bands you can say that about.
@token_illiterate_commenter: Dunno what Pirate's logic is, but I'm happy to acknowledge they contributed to the evolution of music while at the same time saying you couldn't pay me to listen to that bubblegum crap.
.
Seriously. As far as seminal bands go, give me the MC5, or Iggy, or the Sex Pistols, or the Velvet Underground, or the Clash. At least there is a pulse.
I think my mission was successful. i dont know if anybody will check back here, but, I dont mind the beatles, im just not a big fan. they did make a big impact on music, but i dont really like them, and i was just being a dick...

I mean, if it was Elvis I could understand, but the Beatles?? They have at most 3 good songs.
