I'm still on the fence about getting a mac. *n00b alert* what's that one that has like the 21" screen with the components built in? I like that one -- or maybe a macbook -- do they ever package them together as a deal?
@BergenCountyJC can't beat MW2: iMac is the one you're thinking about. But yea, if you're a student or just like portable shit period, I'd rather suggest a Macbook or Macbook Pro.
You ever get around to beating MW2? Played it online yet? Multiplayer on that game is my crack cocaine these days...
@TheSonOfKrypton: I finally played around with a MacBook Pro when I went to the Apple store instead of going straight to the iPhones (which I already have...).
All I can say is DAMN. I want one. I just wish they came in a size a little smaller than 13". My laptop is 11.1" and I love the size. The 13" just seems a little bit too big.
But man! It was fast. And so smooth. iTunes runs perfectly on a Mac. I'm getting one next year. And sorry for drifting so far off topic. :]
@TheSonOfKrypton: I beat it on recruit which I don't personally qualify as beating it. Multiplayer online I do like playing. Hit me up with a FR -- SusquehannaGrad
@BergenCountyJC can't beat MW2: The 21 incher is a macbook built into a screen.... meaning there is generally no differences in the innards of the macbook pro and the imac.
I was on the fence about getting my 15 inch macbook pro, but my band was progressing and i decided it would be nice to dabble in audio recording. Logic 9 and the fireport that im using are fantastic.
Go buy a mac... do it... But if you prefer desktops or already have a kick ass lappy, het the 21 inch imac or the massive 27 incher and play your xbox through it rofl
@kthxbai: I have a 2007 model HP laptop -- obviously nothing impressive. I also have a 2004 model Dell PC (bought for college) which after recently having everything rebooted works alright. I have given up on games for PC since I'm quite content with my xbox so my next computer would be just for leisure and the occasional Photoshop project. BTW -- Thanks readers for all the responses/advise! #macpurchase
@BergenCountyJC can't beat MW2: Well, I didnt think the backlit keys on the pro would matter so much, but they kick so much ass. And i prefer the glossy screen on the pro as well. You can occasionally find a sick deal on a pro making it closer to that $1000 pricepoint on the white macbook. Plus firewire is a snazzy extra. -Honestly aside from aesthetics, the differences between the white mac/eggbook are really minimal -firewire, ram max of 4GB on the eggbook, 8GB on the pro...-
Personally I think desktops are a dying breed, and I love my MBP. If you can go buy one RIGHT NOW and love its backlit keyboard-y goodness. Later in 2010 there will probably be an i5 or i7 upgrade in macbook pros and you will really be able to justify upgrading.
Side note- 360 FTFWWWWW!!! I have been on this left for dead 2 binge for two weeks now- ever since that javelin glitch on MW2 got to widespread- but with those two games I have so much re-found love for my 360. I would PS3 bash, but I would rather not start a flame war with Son of Krypton. =]
Read several of the comments and as expected there is atheletic program barking, but you should know that in most schools the atheletic program generates most income for the school. More so than tuition. This is why athletes get these perks and why Nick Saban makes 4 million bucks a year.
Though giving them macs is dumb because there is no accident care protection.
@kingbob337: I looked at the USF financial projections for 09/10. Only by including large booster donations do sports revenues come within a few million dollars of money generated by student fees.
Moreover, if you look at the change in their football coach's salary and the change in Football revenue year over year, they are shelling out more dollars to their coach for less revenue. Considering that this year was a down year for USF I'd imagine those projections could be even lower than anticipated.
The schools where your talking about sports revenue outweighing tuition revenue are schools that have smaller student bodies, elite sports programs, and even then generally only if their football programs make it to lucrative bowl games, such as BCS games or one of the few high profile non-BCS bowl games.
I could run off and get you plenty more sources, but don't feel like it. It is an area that has been well researched by many, including sociologists, my area of study. Read the first two articles if nothing else. They really get at the heart of university athletics programs.
@quantumbits: USF is cutting it close. With what they are paying their coach, going 7-5 and making the International bowl barely covers their athletic costs. If they had lost one or two more games things would have been much worse.
USF wants to be a big time program, and so they pay like a big time program. If you do that and then don't make the big bowl games, you need to have a much larger national following to still break even (ala Michigan, Notre Dame's struggles).
...even if you don't like Apple products, who cares!? It's a (temporary) free (with the price of tuition) computer (RAM and hard drive upgrades not available; not valid for water polo or lacrosse players; residents only)!
On a separate note, was anyone else reminded of the 1983 commercial, where everyone looked the same because of their computers?
Nothing worse than worrying about a loaner. How much did they jack the fees for all the other students who didn't get athletic scholarships to pay for these babies? Also you gotta wonder, what is the point of having them as loaners? After 4 years they're going to be outdated.
@Rosa Golijan: No shit? Huh, I would have never thought so. That's pretty cool. I wanted to go there, but things fell through (Read: not accepted). I always figured you were up in NY with the other Giz heads.
@che-che: Actually, the majority of money at universities comes in from donors and research grants. Most universities lose money on athletics with fewer than 25% breaking even or making a profit. I will give exposure, to a certain extent, but don't bring up the patent lie that a majority of the funding comes from athletics. If it did, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and other schools like them would have been broke long ago.
@che-che: Actually, much more money is made from research grants than from sports ticket sales. Universities get usually close to half of all grant awards as "indirect" costs which at my (somewhat medium sized) school runs about $100 million a year.
Athetic programs though, don't pay money into the university system, not directly. Athletics are (sometimes by state laws) self-contained. They make money to support their own operations and give their own scholarships. The most they give to schools is name recognition. I think the most direct way they help an average student is sometimes they give music scholarships to kids in the marching band. Likewise, most universities don't fund their atheltics at all, the dept supports itself. In some states this is a legal requirement.

They'd have to commit suicide then. Patents are public domain. Can't file them unless you disclose the contents.

Could the guy who keeps harping about most athletic programs failing to break even please provide something to support his claim?
