I think the new MB (lack of firewire aside) and new iMacs are pretty good additions to make up the tail end of 2009, but a matte black Macbook tacked onto the line would've been swwweet. #philschiller
@snowy_coke: Technically, a spec bump on existing models would not be new products, so that could still happen, but it's only 2 months left in the year, so it doesn't make much of a difference. #philschiller
@Eruanno: True but installing it is expensive if you have the Mac Genius do it and it voids Apple Care if you do it yourself so it is kind of annoying. #philschiller
@The Lab: You could always you know, just check off the upgraded HDD when making your purchase. $50 dollars more gets you a 250Gb instead of that 160Gb. #philschiller
@7egend: Apple Care means not opening the case for 3 years. That 250 Gb might look sufficient now but maybe not so much in 2012 (you will need lots of storage to record the end of the world). Also at some universities to get the high-level academic discounts you have to buy stock. #philschiller
@The Lab: Installing it doesn't void the warranty, but I believe if you cause damage, it won't be covered. So, you're OK as long as you don't screw it up. #philschiller
@bitgod: I looked it up and the RAM upgrade is clearly fine [bit.ly] but the hard drive is another issue. Apple doesn't seem to address the issue directly with MacBooks and seems to have a look-the-other way policy about it but it technically may violate the warranty. #philschiller
You guys have been holding out on us! I guess as this blogs enters more mainstream you have to learn to put a gag on pre-releases. I'm sure you guys learned about this "event" weeks or at least, days before today. #whitemacbook
Can someone explain why the low end 27" iMac has a 3.06GHZ processor and the high end has a 2.66GHZ quad core? Does the quad core help that much? Confused! #whitemacbook
@Walter VanRooyen: Well, think of it like this-- for properly written software that can take advantage of multicore hardware (see: SNOW LEOPARD), a 3.06ghz dual-core system means about 6.12ghz in functional power, whereas as 2.66ghz quad-core system gives you about 10.64ghz under the hood. Yeah, the difference is sizeable-- but the real advantage is that this particular quad-core (the core i5) is designed to support triple-channel memory, which removes some of the theoretical bottleneck you'd suffer while multitasking. #whitemacbook
@teohhanhui: Indeed. My mistake. I actually knew this, but replied in a hurry and got mixed up. Thanks for catching my error, gentlemen. Cheers! #whitemacbook
@my name is jonas: Better unibody enclosure, FW800, backlit keyboard, glass panel display.
The big issue though, is that Apple currently has 13" MBP's in its refurb lot for the same price as a brand new white Macbook, at least for now. #whitemacbook
@Kaiser-Machead: Yup. I got my 13" uMBP back in August refurbished for $999. I'm not to upset by the new WhiteBook, except for the hard drive. But, meh, I have an external drive. #whitemacbook
I'm glad the white macbook hasn't become second-class, and they still give it the new stuff for the people who can only afford entry-level. Brings down the price point for great tech. #whitemacbook
@jakebathman: With the cutting of Firewire, it's being kept a second-class notebook to keep appeal going in favor of the more expensive "Pro" option. Lacking firewire basically kills the appeal for people who actually do "pro" things but don't want to spend "pro" money on the laptop. #whitemacbook
@UnderLoK: I have a refurb 17" MBP (non-unibody) and I love it. I have zero problem buying refurb, but I'm saying it's nice to have new machine entry prices at $1000 without having a stripped-down version of the hardware. #whitemacbook
@UnderLoK: A lot of the time, "refurbished" means that it was opened and returned for issues outside of technical fault of the laptop, so really it's often a brand new laptop that's been de-minted. #whitemacbook
@Kaiser-Machead: A lot of refurbs are actually machines that were set up as CTO by VARs, but the transaction was never completed for whatever reason and the computer can't be sold as new. #whitemacbook
This might make me turn the accelerometer back on in my x200t. When using it control the screen orientation it was annoying while moving the tablet around. If it could just control the browser I might use it again.
Not really sure what the point is...
I can say the only thing that would ever get me interested in firefox again is if they fixed the real estate problems.
I have been spoiled by google chrome and I love my self-hiding unobtrusive status bars and small slim top-bars.
Firefox with bookmarks bar open, and tabs, it's almost like half my screen is taken up!
So that means that this current MB will be the very last that has a pop-n-swap battery. C'est la vie. People are already adjusting. My question is: Will it keep FW400 to distinguish it further from the Pro, or will it get the 800 along with everything else? Aside from the shell and other goodies, the current Macbook is surprisingly close to the 13" Pro, sporting the exact same graphics. The addition of SD would be most welcome, but I have this nagging feeling that they'll keep it out, along with an LED display.
I would like to see the Macbook get a proper rigid magnesium shell, and ditch the glossy white and bring back the matte black. It'll be tougher, stain resistant, more scratch resistant and more rigid, which means no goldarn cracking along the corners or assembly lines. That won't happen I'm sure, but one can wish.
A thinner, lighter Macbook also makes me wonder about the Air. The current 13" Macbook Pro is already extremely close to the Air in stature, and then beats it handily in just about any other task. If the Macbook does likewise and is even cheaper, would there even be any market left for that?
@lostarchitect: I agree. Problem is that they're probably keeping the discrete out of both the 13's and lowest end 15" to keep their margins high while shaving the price.

The aluminum "Macbook" pretty much foreshadowed the eventual disappearance of the FW400 port it seems. Bummer. #whitemacbook
