@CommentingpointlesslyisMeh: I'll take the Deathadder if you upgrade, but I don't think there would be a huge difference. The Mamba is really nice, but you already own a good mouse...
The "puck mouse" was horrible. I hated using that thing. The magic mouse is surprisingly smaller than I thought it was. It was very responsive and such, but kinda small for my massive gorilla hands.
@ID Ron Burgundy: My hands are pretty small for a guy, almost fem even, and although I hate to admit this facet of manliness, the upside is that the Magic Mouse is wonderful to use. If you can't use it as a mouse, treat it as a touchpad with tools like the BetterTouchTool and the other one that Gizmodo posted yesterday (might have been the day before). I think that's the ticket.
I got to try out this mouse for about 10 minutes at the Apple store, and I must say that I love how responsive and smooth its scrolling functionality is. It's the next best thing to my MBP's trackpad.
That said, I hate this mouse's ergonomics. It's too flat to rest my hand comfortably on. That flat-out kills whatever redeeming qualities it has.
@MarcusMaximus: Side to side scrolling is excellent. It pretty much carries over a lot of the usability of my laptop's pad over to the mouse. It's a huge step in the right direction compared to that godawful nipple ball, but it would've been better if Apple kept the shape of its predecessor. It at least was more comfortable to hold.
@Kaiser-Machead: I know this is going to sound nuts but you depending how tall you are, you can't get really feel out the ergonomics of the mouse in the store.
When I first felt the mouse in the store I had the same experience as you. Loved the multitouch/scrolling hated the feel, especially the sharp edges. So naturally being a a fanboy, I bought it.
It has to have something to do with the angle that you hold it at the store, but really it one of the more comfortable mice that I've ever used.
@macpatrik: I'm 6'1", so I'm going to come over the mouse a good deal higher than I would the mouse on my desk in the office, so perhaps you're right, but I refuse to squat down to test it :P
@Kaiser-Machead: Eye look forward to the day our I's via retina recognition do the work of a mouse on screen with clicking open and closing done vocally or by blinking. Imagine being able to keep two hands on the keyboard at all times.

@SeattleTed is proud to like Robert Zimmerman: Sounds frustrating. My pointer would be flying all over the place, and if I have something caught in my eye, I'll be accidentally opening things all the time with frequent blinking.
When Fukasawa first made the Apple Mouse, I wonder if he thought about the future, or what impact it would eventually have on the entire world. Although the newest iteration is much different, it's still the basic piece of plastic that it was back then. I wonder if the mouse will even exist in 20 more years.
Jonathan Ive is simply amazing at designing products. This is a fine example of just that. The amount of time and work that goes into such a product is completely ignored by most consumers and it yeilds significant impact on daily life (at least on those of us whom work computer based jobs).
Again, I must point back to Objectified. If you haven't seen it, do so!
It is a bit like the space shuttle riding on a 747. Unfortunately, much like the shuttle and the Boeing aircraft, the mouse is showing it's age. Really, you could toss the iPhone in the photo as the new era of pointer control.
While this looks pretty good, I am going to have to say BetterTouchTool looks like a better alternative, also free. it is updated regularly adding plenty of new features and it also works with the uMBP Trackpads.
However one feature that makes this a good rival is being able to save presets, as well as the real-time graphical display.
does the magic mouse work on older macbook's yet? I thought when it shipped it only worked with iMac or maybe Mac Pro's... will it work with my pre-unibody white macbook?
@TonyWonder: System Requirements: Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later with Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 or Mac OS X v10.6.1 or later with Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0
@TonyWonder: I love mine for everyday use. I was worried that using multi-touch on a mouse would be uncomfortable and not intuitive. But it really is. Very smooth. Definitely not the most ergonomic mouse out there, but I would say it's pretty comfortable.
I don't like it though for when I'm doing graphic design. Just doesn't work out. I still use an old wired Logitech for that.
@Mark Wilson: With a timeframe? You bet. If I had made a one year bet two years ago when the vaportablet was first rumored with every mac-tard on earth, I'd be a billionaire by now.
@Mark Wilson: I'll take some of that action. Read what he said, "Bordering on ficticious". This is a product that is not confirmed to exist by anyone who can be said to know for sure. A million rumours do not make a product real.
@Steve Schmitz: if you want a good laugh, search for #appletablet here on Giz. 58 articles over 2 years ( I assume there are more not tagged as the first is a photoshop contest).
I'm sorry Mark but corporate whisperings and unofficial concept images make for a pretty insubstantial product. While it's incredibly likely that this is going to happen it's still a way off.
I mean you only have to look through the Apple tablet articles on Gizmodo to see that it's nothing more than a swirling cloud of rumour and anticipation. The most we have from Apple about it is a very vague patent.
I mean to quote another article on Giz:
"We still don't know what the fabled Apple Tablet actually looks like, or if it even exists, really"
It's probably not fictitious but it is damn well toeing that line. It's just silly how many articles are posted if someone even breathes the words "Apple Tablet". The hype is just getting ridiculous.
@Kaiser-Machead: i disagree...MBPs rely so much on passive heat dissipation and the air gaps below the chiclets.. Any increase in surface area is a plus and i guess that product is for those who otherwise would have it closed while docked. That's bad juju, imo.
I bought my MBP in the summer, and I don't regret it at all. It's a fantastic machine with superb battery life. If you don't currently have a proper computer to hold you over for the next few months, just get it now. You won't regret it. Don't fall for the same nonsense the bleeding edge people do.
@Kaiser-Machead: If your iffy about the price of the machines you can get great deals in the refurbished lines. Just go to the store link and you will find the refurbs in the lower left. My first laptop was a Powerbook g4 that I bought in 2004 and I got almost 6 years out of it (just got a new MBP about a month ago)

Apple's most recent mice are the best examples of this, because they're all just so goddamn uncomfortable to use.
How is it that I enjoy using a $15 plastic lump of an optical mouse, and loathe using one that costs $80?
