    @Littell: And it happens all the time! Divergent boundaries at the sea floor always have new basalt come up and replace the old seabed. Amazing stuff to see. Our geo prof showed us footage of things a lot like this.

    is this how the earthquakes happens ?

    @SS: No.

    Plates move. Plates get stuck. Pressure builds. Plates jerk. Buildings fall down.

    That's in laymens terms.

    @SS: The oceanic crust is far thinner than continental. When the plates divide at the ocean floor, lava generally flows out and becomes new seabed as the plates subduct under continental boundaries. The subduction at the boundaries are what can generally cause volcanic activity around coastlines, with all the pressure of the plate sliding underneath. Earthquakes are generally caused by faults.

    Horrified penguins were later interviewed about the blood bath. One plushly plumed penguin remarked: "I never thought I'd say this, but I wish that human had taken at least a bite out of Bobby. Then we wouldn't have lost Jane, John, Jill, and Leonard." #nationalgeographic

    Seals are fairly gentle creatures.
    I remember playing and touching Seals, Sea Lions and Elephant Seals as a kid in Peninsula Valdez [en.wikipedia.org] right out in the open

    Considering they are average 5000 ~ 6000 lbs., maybe it stupid to do that.

    As far as I know the Polar Bear is the only animal that does not fear man and considers us food. #nationalgeographic

    @aec007: Leopard seals are equivalent of polar bears. They could readily attack humans if they can. And they eat other seals.

    And I'm not sure playing with elephant seals is such a good ideas either.

    @Pessimippopotamus: I think you are right by judging the teeth on those things.

    As far as elephant or lion seals, at the time (40 years ago) park rangers in Argentina could not stop you from going to touch them in the open coast (100's of miles long) so they "adviced" you not to get "too close" and / or never get in between pups and mothers or you be in trouble.
    Other than that, some, not all elephant, lion and regular seals would allow you to touch them.

    You never forget the growl of a 5000 lb elephant lion from two feet away only to see him cuddle up to you for more scratching of the snout while this monster looks at you with puppy eyes... #nationalgeographic
