Calendar app is definitely way faster now-- basically zero delay when switching from day to day. Haven't seen any other major changes, will be testing battery life tomorrow.
My EV-DO symbol keeps disappearing and reappearing, along with signal strength. Letting me use data once every couple of minutes. I'm done with this Pre experiment. Jumping ship with the new T&C change. This is absurd.
this is probably the worst list of "essential" apps I've ever seen. No NewsRoom for RSS reading? Fucking TEATIMER?! An app that tells you when TEA is done? You can find that by going to any random website. ToppleBall is a great game but there are better ones that have much nicer graphics and use the accelerometer much better as well: ParaTrooper and Tilt GT. Plus you recommend Where and Yelp and Fandango. Where does what both the other do, and Flixster is the better movie app anyway.
I own a pre. And sorry there are NOT 21 essential Apps.
WebOS is great. Better the IPhone as an OS. Iphone OS is basically a big launcher page. But the apps are nonexistent and some features like the normal music player suck ass.
And sorry if you're talking Essential apps it's criminal to ignore the better homebrew apps of Music Remix, Dr. Podder, Ampache Mobile. It's telling that half of these were launch apps. They are not adding many good apps since. Like there's no good facebook app. Twee is good but A tea timer? Really?
Again WebOS is fine. It's the lack of other things.
See the funny thing is that I've seen people, actual people in real life using things like the G1 and the iPhone as dumbphones, just talk and text. They know the internet is on there, to be sure, but "it's kinda small and slow..." so they don't really use that part. People who've owned smartphones for months and haven't heard of an app store or a market, or an app for that matter.
"Oh, there's a compass in there?"
So I think people who can't handle a smartphone (or didn't want one, if you can entertain the thought) still adapt just fine. For them it's no worse than dealing with a dumbphone, really - poky menus are poky menus. They still have a usable phone, and if they care at all it's a bit of a status symbol. Merry Christmas, Grandma.
@Killjoy: I've got a smartphone (android G1, hacked for use on AT&T) with no data plan. In fact, I have internet blocked through AT&T so I don't get any billing oops's.
The thing is, at least 95% of the time I CAN use it as a full smartphone - because it has wifi, and that's everywhere (of course at home and work).
I've got all kinds of apps on here, most of them don't require an internet connection (and those that do - 95% of the time I can use them too - whenever I'm in wifi).
And when I can't - I've still got voice and text. No worse than a dumbphone.
It doesn't seem like that would be such a bad thing to gift a [unlocked] *device* like this to someone, to replace their current phone, without disturbing their current plan - and offering them the *option* to upgrade their plan if they wanted.
@geolemon: It's good to know Android apps will work on the G1 on AT&T to that extent even with no data plan. Beyond being helpful information to share, that's relevant to my current situation.
As a gift that'd be expensive though, unless it was an old phone you could give away, since you'd likely buy it unsubsidized. Better give it to someone you love!
@Killjoy: That's what I did - bought my G1 used - already unlocked (and rooted) - for $100 from a friend of mine who bought it used for $150...
from what I understand, T-Mobile's 3G is different than AT&T's 3G, so if I did add a data plan to this phone, I'd be limited to 2G.
But given the availability of wifi out there, having 2G doesn't seem like it would be that much of a penalty - you'd just be using it in the 5% of the time you aren't in range fo wifi anyway.
Of course (just like for me now), I couldn't put the Google Maps navigation into Street View mode and drive like I'm the virtual Google van with 2G, but still... lol
Given the contract issue, I can't imagine getting a smartphone for anyone other than my wife or kids (if I had kids that were old enough and responsible enough).
If you know someone who already wants a smartphone on a certain network, then getting them a gift card to help with the costs might make sense.
I'm thinking about finding out what the lowest-cost plan for an Eris would be for me; more out of curiosity than anything, but I'd be using birthday (in January) money for it, so technically, it'd be a gift.
Gifting someone a smartphone who isn't a spouse or direct relative is kind of like a promise ring. "Here is an expensive piece of tech. I plan to keep you around for 2 years or until I can afford to buy the contract out because I'm tired of you."
@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: Very true, the only times I ever hear about someone getting a phone is because their parents got one for them. However, I'm finding that a lot more of my friends are getting smartphones because the tmobile and sprint plans are cheap with data nowadays. (Also,it seems like all my rich friends and their brothers all got or are getting new iphones... )
Smartphones are so much more mainstream now with all the commercials and advertising. Parents see their kids like that so they get it. Not to mention the fact that I see a lot more parents and older crowds carrying around the iPhones and Blackberrys and countless other devices. I looked around a cafeteria today and saw a Storm, Pre, 3 G1s, a couple Blackberrys and some iPhones. It really is getting to that point of communication that it is another standard and very worthy gift, to anyone.
Not to mention, the last time I gave someone a phone that I had picked out for them, they dumped me 3 weeks later and I still had to pay on their contract. At least, until they remembered I was paying the bill and had it transferred to their name. (3 months)
@travisco_nabisco: People have purchased far more expensive items for Christmas: cars, plane ticket to (insert exotic location here), so a $400+ smart phone sans contract is not that much of a stretch.
I guess I look at it like giving a car to someone. Unless they specifically told me exactly what they wanted, AKA it wasn't a surprise, I wouldn't purchase a smartphone for someone. It's a deeply personal purchase based on what 'feels' good to you.
I have, given someone a card that said, "Good for one free smartphone of your choice." to a loved one. Which included me standing around on launch day for the original iPhone to get their present for them.
I am 99.9% sure I am receiving the HTC Touch Pro2 from U.S. Cellular (There was a $350 bill last month, which could have only been augmented by a new phone purchase).
@Jack L. Peterson: You mean other than a billing error because US Cellular is known for raping its customers and getting sued by State AG's for shady contract practices in the past?

(I kid; haven't found the inevitable glitch that's gonna make me hate this update yet, but I know it's lurking somewhere.)
