In these days of cheap emulators all you need is any sort of modern electronic portable. A PSP is capable of doing all three easily. This sort of thing is just for people who can't give up their cartridges. #mods
What is this, Cowanmodo? It seems every story is speculation about what Cowan may or may not be working on for the future. I know you have a lot of Cowan fan-boys to appease, and I'm sure that Lam is on Cowan's payroll with free access to any unreleased Cowan products in exchange for plugging any leaks before they happen, but this is ridiculous. Just once I want to go to my favorite gadget site and read some real tech news. What is Kevin Rose wearing? Where does Walt Mossberg eat lunch? What is Coleco up to? These are questions I want answered. #tablets
Where's that chart about how close you need to sit to tell the difference between 720 and 1080? I think at 4.3 inches, the screen has to be in your skull. #pmp
@Hiphopopotamus: Those calculations don't really apply to real world use. The overal image coming to your eyes still looks better, even if you eyes can't see each individual pixel, because it blends. #pmp
I actually have a video question to ask you guys. I just got some HD video files to play on my HTPC only to discover that they're in the nearly useless (at least for what I'm trying to do) MKV container format. They are h.264 video and AC3 encoded audio. What would you guys say is the best program to use to convert them to a more usable format like AVI or MP4? #pmp
MKV is actually a pretty useful container. If you haven't done so already, you can download ffdshow-tryouts to play the content in basically any media player (including WM Player, and by extension, likely Windows Media Center if that's what you use).
However, if you really do want to reeencode:
Windows: I like SUPER. Pretty easy to use, and a lot of options if you're so inclined.
For anything else (or alternative for Windows): Avidemux works really well. This program would also allow you to do some minimal clipping, color correction, etc. #pmp
@Woozle Wozzle: xvid and divx are codecs, all of the above are container formats for those codecs. AVI likely implies some xvid and dvix support, but it's hard to know for sure. You can encode basically any format and put it in any container.
I'd be more worried about trying to fit much 1080P content onto 8GB. #pmp
When are noobs going to stop throwing LEDs into shit?
They're the script-kiddies of modding.
Go online -
Pester people about the amount of power in device -
pester more people about the brightest LEDs -
find LED power calculator -
Brag incessantly about your nigh unusable device.
*sigh*
This is probably the worst mod I've ever seen. Completely pointless!
If someone has gone to the trouble (and voided the warranty) of opening the thing up, it would seem worthwhile doing a little more than just wiring up some LEDs!
It qualifies as a mod about as much as sticking rhinestones to the case.
@LittleJon: You obviously don't understand the point of modding do you? It's not always about function or practicality, but about having fun and feeling proud of what you created/modded.
You say its not much more of a mod than putting rhinestones? Well I think you voided your own argument in the paragraph prior to that one. He actually had to wire the LEDs up, find room for them, cut holes in the damn thing.
@Z Naught: As an electronics engineer, I can tell you that wiring up a few LEDs is no big deal. It's a bit like saying that you did some home improvement because you changed the toilet roll!
I don't understand the bitching the moaning. First of all, doesn't look all that different from the current PSP models except it smaller and button placement is a bit different. A good number of PSP games doesn't even come close to filling up a UMD. If 16GBs plus memstick support isn't enough for you then you have personal problems. A 16GB memstick with on-board memory gives you more storage than a standard Xbox 360. Plus it has bluetooth support and it can be tethered to your cell phone? I'd buy one. The only other things I would need would be PSP trophy support that actually shows up on my PSN account on my PS3, and a better browser for the PSP and the PS3. They're just not stable.
As far as dual analogs nubs go...whatever. dual analog for Fps games on consoles suck total ass...why would I want the frustration with analog nubs and only two shoulder buttons as opposed to four on a DS3 controller? Becoming another unskilled bastard, a slave to auto aim, living in delusion like I actually accomplished that kill streak when in reality it was the damn aim-bot overlord? No thanks.
If Sony really wanted to go balls to the wall with FPS support on the go, then the PSP-G would have a touch screen. FPS games on DS have superior accuracy that simply couldn't be matched with a dual analog setup because of the touch screen support. The cramps that come with it...well...we'll save that for a different convo.
Ugh. Unless they have some way of shipping games on SD cards, pass. I don't have the patience or the interest to spend all this bandwidth downloading games I could just pick up in a store.
Nor do I have any interest in buying a game I can't trade/resell/actually -own-, either. I do like digital distribution, to a point, particularly for smaller games on the level of XBLA, Virtual Console, and some smaller PSN titles, but as a console's main support? No. Never. Never ever -ever-.
It kills the secondhand market, it kills the sense of ownership one has from actually -possessing- a game, and it kills any joy the collector takes in managing shelves of their prized finds. Absolutely epic failure.
@Kia: @Brian Sexton: I disagree. There is no way in hell I'd go back to the PSP 1000 or the DSPhat. I wouldn't even buy the original PS2 after seeing the PS2-slim.
Also judging from how many companies have released smaller and smaller gear over the last 10 years...I'd say that smaller form factor IS a selling point.

Some of the issues there are really incredible. For example, 1GB game downloads, but only a 802.11b wireless connection!?
