I'm still on the fence about getting a mac. *n00b alert* what's that one that has like the 21" screen with the components built in? I like that one -- or maybe a macbook -- do they ever package them together as a deal?
@BergenCountyJC can't beat MW2: iMac is the one you're thinking about. But yea, if you're a student or just like portable shit period, I'd rather suggest a Macbook or Macbook Pro.
You ever get around to beating MW2? Played it online yet? Multiplayer on that game is my crack cocaine these days...
@TheSonOfKrypton: I finally played around with a MacBook Pro when I went to the Apple store instead of going straight to the iPhones (which I already have...).
All I can say is DAMN. I want one. I just wish they came in a size a little smaller than 13". My laptop is 11.1" and I love the size. The 13" just seems a little bit too big.
But man! It was fast. And so smooth. iTunes runs perfectly on a Mac. I'm getting one next year. And sorry for drifting so far off topic. :]
@TheSonOfKrypton: I beat it on recruit which I don't personally qualify as beating it. Multiplayer online I do like playing. Hit me up with a FR -- SusquehannaGrad
@BergenCountyJC can't beat MW2: The 21 incher is a macbook built into a screen.... meaning there is generally no differences in the innards of the macbook pro and the imac.
I was on the fence about getting my 15 inch macbook pro, but my band was progressing and i decided it would be nice to dabble in audio recording. Logic 9 and the fireport that im using are fantastic.
Go buy a mac... do it... But if you prefer desktops or already have a kick ass lappy, het the 21 inch imac or the massive 27 incher and play your xbox through it rofl
@kthxbai: I have a 2007 model HP laptop -- obviously nothing impressive. I also have a 2004 model Dell PC (bought for college) which after recently having everything rebooted works alright. I have given up on games for PC since I'm quite content with my xbox so my next computer would be just for leisure and the occasional Photoshop project. BTW -- Thanks readers for all the responses/advise! #macpurchase
@BergenCountyJC can't beat MW2: Well, I didnt think the backlit keys on the pro would matter so much, but they kick so much ass. And i prefer the glossy screen on the pro as well. You can occasionally find a sick deal on a pro making it closer to that $1000 pricepoint on the white macbook. Plus firewire is a snazzy extra. -Honestly aside from aesthetics, the differences between the white mac/eggbook are really minimal -firewire, ram max of 4GB on the eggbook, 8GB on the pro...-
Personally I think desktops are a dying breed, and I love my MBP. If you can go buy one RIGHT NOW and love its backlit keyboard-y goodness. Later in 2010 there will probably be an i5 or i7 upgrade in macbook pros and you will really be able to justify upgrading.
Side note- 360 FTFWWWWW!!! I have been on this left for dead 2 binge for two weeks now- ever since that javelin glitch on MW2 got to widespread- but with those two games I have so much re-found love for my 360. I would PS3 bash, but I would rather not start a flame war with Son of Krypton. =]
Bah! You whipper snappers and your 'new' powerless remotes. The Very first remote control was powerless. The button ringed a chime in the remote and the TV changed channel when it herd certain tones. Now get off my lawn!
@Tank: Let me get this straight. They've developed the technology that allows one to to use the remote, just as usual, and generate the required electricity from the button presses themselves. But rather than simply pushing the button, as usual, you think the better solution is to first shake the remote, then push the button as usual? Is that right?
@elementary: If this technology will be used only for regular TV remotes it's awesome but for universal remotes, I see problems. How could it supply enough electricity for the FF button? How about enough electricity for the CPU to look up the data table for programming? A quick shake could power it for a couple hours.
So if pressing the button generates the power, does that mean when it doesn't work, you are legitimately allowed to just 'Push the button harder' as a means of fixing it, repeatedly, and with increasing enthusiasm.
@FartyMcPooPants: Remember that long jump in world 8? I'm pretty sure it was impossible to make it without mashing the jump button hard enough to leave circular impression on your skin while simultaneously jerking the controller upward with enough force to lift your ass slightly off the floor. I've mastered it.
The first remotes from the '50s didn't require electricity either. The concept was a lot more simple, where you would 'click' one of three buttons and that click used ultrasonic frequencies to signal the television.
This is there the phrase 'clicker' for tv remotes came from.
I also have a magic device that uses no batteries, yet continues to function as a mechanical marvel. It doesn't generate electricity, but the basic idea remains the same:
Great... too bad as of 10.6 Apple completely took control over the remote and 3rd party apps wont work unless you get a third party remote driver (like RemoteBuddy). #appleremote
@fuzzycuffs: Seriously? Any 3rd party apps? I'm not being sarcastic or anything, I just want / need to know. This will definitely influence if I buy it or not. #appleremote
@Identity (reclamation): It's a Snow Leopard thing, not a remote thing. You'll need to buy RemoteBuddy if you plan on using it for third party apps. Menu forces running of FrontRow (easily remediated by uninstalling FrontRow). Other buttons not so much. Up/Down always does volume, right (play) always opens up iTunes (you can disable itunes).
There's a bunch of workarounds, but they all break some other functionality. Things like removing/disabling iTunes, editing some plist files to disable volume control (which ends up disabling it systemwide, but may not be a problem if you use your mac as a dedicated boxee box and control volume through a receiver or tv...), etc etc.
It's a giant pain. Apple doesn't acknowledge it as a bug, but actually a feature. #appleremote

They'd have to commit suicide then. Patents are public domain. Can't file them unless you disclose the contents.
