Isn't this likely to be commercial suicide. Surely the networks generate more money from calls then they do from data (unless its pay per MB data). Why would they want to cut their own throats? Reply

I would really love to see an explanation of whether a voice or data network call uses more bandwidth. I would think everyone would be better served if all the traffic was converted to packetized data, but then IANANE. Reply

My wife's iPhone broke (dropped for the umpteenth time) and a friend of mine who just recently left Apple instructed me to not to purchase a new one yet, but to just get by with as cheap a phone as I can until summer. He said that the new one will blow the previous versions away. So IMHO, this analyst isn't far off. Reply

@trs: The employees of Apple would have no insider knowledge of such an improvement, they are just going on the same patterns and rumors that sites like this follow... So while the rumors are usually accurate, just remember that he has no insider information and is just guessing. Reply

Image of trs trs 02/27/10

@cruzer555: No he most certainly was not just guessing. Some Apple employees have very direct knowledge of such improvements. This guy wasn't some retail employee. Reply

@cruzer555: I didn't post any secrets. It's a no-brainer that a new iPhone will be coming out. My friend didn't reveal to me any specific features. He was just really excited about it. In addition, he didn't express this to me until after he already left Apple. Reply

Regarding the size of Luxembourg:

I'm not impressed by the fact that Luxembourg is 30% larger than Rhode Island. After a particularly large meal, I once left a dump in the toilet the size of Providence and Cranston combined.

The boxee thing is interesting. I didn't see if it will play avi's. I just picked up a refurb acer revo, instead of another apple tv, so I could cut back on re-encoding avi's to apple tv acceptable formats. If this had been out, and supported avi's, probably would have gone with another Apple TV for the other room. Revo is alright, but still a few too many clicks through the winxp os to get into the entertainment meat, and it took me most of an evening to get the right software installed to view Hulu overseas with decent quality. How in the crap do you "virtually rape" someone?

"Oh, my, what is (s)he ever doing to my character? I'll just sit here and watch... Oh, that looks somewhat questionable... Uh oh, if I only had some way to "shut off" this particular activity from happening!"

@dwight-schrute: We're talking about WoW players here bud. For many of them the game and reality are completely merged at this point. This is serious business and the perp should be hunted down and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

In reply to Nokia Admits That The N97 Sucked, Working to Improve Their Phones
I clicked hoping for a "Yeah, we knew it sucked as a product" and got more of a "We didn't expect consumers to hate on it so damn hard"...but either way, it shows they've learned their lesson.

I don't want to turn this to gaming, but Nokia is oddly like Nintendo in their respective space. To many people who truly, truly care, they're doing things ever so wrong, be it a focus on casual titles, friend codes, and ignoring glorious HD, to resistive screens, dated operating systems or completely ignoring carriers and subsidies in America. Yet, for everything "wrong" the hardcore consumer complains about, they're still top dog. It makes you wonder how much they're willing to change or improve...we've seen the fall of top dogs before, be it Motorola or Palm.

To be honest, the bandaid they threw on Symbian last week wasn't that impressive.

So what is better, to live in denial or to come out and say "sorry we sucked before but we're gonna do better"? Any company that admits they made a crap product loses credibility because it never should have been released but denying that it sucked seems worse in my opinion. Reply

@yantelope: Yeah, it's better to simply make products that don't suck...but if you do, I think it's better to simply show off your new, awesome stuff and let that do the talking. To say, "We sucked. We know it" is pretty bad, and to deny anything ever happened and continue on (ex: N97 mini) is worse.

Simply show off your newest tech, so it's both walking the walk and talking the talk...you've obviously learned and you have better experiences to offer now.
