@dingus: I would imagine Android is cheaper to develop for, and possibly easier. It would also surprise me if its performance wasn't better. I have a Fuze and while I love it, Windows Mobile is just saddled with all sorts of "legacy" cruft. Even 6.5 is not much of an improvement, in fact 6.1 to 6.5 is kind of like XP to Vista. It looks marginally cooler, but actually runs worse, and still has a lot of little tiny, non-finger friendly buttons.
My next phone will probably be whatever HTC phone has a keyboard and runs Android at the time. That'll be approximately 17 months from now :)
It's funny that Windows Mobile can actually do way more than people think. Just check out the xda forums and all the accomplishments they've made.
I gotta say though, stock roms are almost always horrible. You gotta go with the custom stuff if you want anything good.
*Forgot to say something more on topic. Anyway, TouchFLO is looking better and better. It's nice to see some shiny things instead of the usual not-so-shiny windows mobile interface.
@MavisPuford: J Average Consumer can't separate WinMo the OS from WinMo the UI. Windows CE is a great embedded OS and up until the last couple of years has been more suited to mobile hardware than Linux. The WinMo UI though looks much like it did when it was on black & white LCD palmtops.
HTC is trying to clean up the UI end as much as a device vendor can. Ultimately MS has to get off their asses and deliver something significantly different or Android will drink their milkshake.
just bought a tilt online because of this. couldn't wait any longer for the touch pro and i got it for less than $200 without a contract. if touchflo and all that doesn't do it for me, i can always just get the touch pro but i figured this would help me tide it over.
I've been running DCD's 3.2.6 rom on my Mogul for months now with very few problems. In fact, my phone has been running so smoothly that I have decided to hold off on upgrading to the Touch Pro.
PS PPCGeeks.com is another great rom community, even if they mainly focus on CDMA devices.
I know I've mentioned the great work the guys over at xda have been doing a few times on this site so it's great to see you guys recognize them too. Kudos.
@Selcouth14: Add 28 for the answer: Yeah, I figured that Giz would have known about (and been occasionally hyping) XDA off and on for several years by now.
I think this is only like the second article I recall seeing that mentioned anything about xda...
Android 1.0 is up and running on the CDMA Touch (Sprint Touch, Verizon XV6900, etc). Stability isn't perfect but the only major things that don't work are android market, gps and the camera. It seems to have more issues depending on which radio you're using. I'm running 3.42.50 from the official Bell rom and its been working fine all day. You can download it from the vogue forum at xda-developers (when it comes back up) and try it out without flashing (it uses a bootloader to load itself into ram so that when you reboot it it just boots windows from the rom again.)
Funny, I just revived my unused T-mobile Dash with the 6.1 ROM yesterday, but I don't really feel like moving my SIM out of my G1 to play with the Dash still.
