I used to have a Zire 31 and my Dad had a Tungsten T. That piece of crap software was the bane of both our existences and I was glad webOS shot it, and threw into the mass 5.0 grave. It never worked properly, couldn't support modern OS's (Vista or 7) and was just general crap.
One question: Why didn't Palm include this as an optional app with the device?
Whether the emulator is truly useful is not the point - there are a huge number of Palm users that would love to have that backward compatibility regardless of whether they would use it for anything more than strolling down memory lane. So many companies make this mistake, whether we go back to the Amiga not having Commodore 64 compatibility or today with the PS3 (current models) not being compatible with the PS2.
@Matt Rickard: Understood, no one needs it - but how tough would it have been to have one guy sit on the side and build a 50% compatible Palm OS emulator to just toss on the Pre? No one really needed a Commodore 64 emulator for the Amiga, either, but it would have made a difference in sales. It isn't about whether the product is good or needed - it is about giving some form of backward compatibility, even if it is lousy.
But, there are two of you saying I am silly asking this question, so I admit that I must be wrong.
@scoobydoo: But if the WinMo 6.5 builds on XDA and PPC geeks are any indication, it wont be worth getting. I mean, the current touch pro is a great phone, but the OS is such garbage that every time you do anything other than browse the internet, or play Kevtris, you get increasingly annoyed.
There are millions of people who just want a phone that works at a decent price. My Verizon phone takes video, plays music, creates ringtones, syncs w/ my PC (and tethers) surfs the web and lots of other stuff for less than 120 bucks a month which includes 3 phones. Sadly, my phone doesn't make fart sounds or give me fanboy cred.
@PaddyDugan: I wish i could promote this...
This is why i think Verizon is still so big without having big marquee phones. Its easy when reading giz to stop thinking about the 99% of the population that doesn't care about Apps, touch screen UIs, and so many fancy features. Most people just want something that texts, calls, and takes pictures. ts too easy to read a tech website and think that everyone is only buying iPhones, truth is most people aren't nor do they have a Pre, or a G1, or even a Blackberry. These phones serve niche markets, and while they are great at showcasing the technology, most people don't need it until its cheaper, or simply a normal feature on phones.
Verizon focuses on selling feature phones(which is the appropriate term for "dumb phones" with smart phone bits), not smartphones, and it is doing well at that.
So here's to you PaddyDugan and Verizon for understanding that all most people want is a phone that works on a good network.
Shit. I really hope the " chocolate" touch doesn't end up being the hot recently leaked black label phone. I just switched out of VZW for the G1 (which I'm not regretting...yet). I thought it would be years before VZW got their gimped version of that hot 21:9 phone. Here I was almost kicking myself about "missing out" on the glyde 2
I'm so glad I left Verizon. I was pleasantly surprised at Sprint when I got my Pre. It gets awesome coverage where I live and the 70 bucks a month is pretty dang good for what you get.
@bill cant fart: I was also pleasantly surprised. Btw, if you haven't enabled the gesture to switch apps, you should. Go to the Screen & Lock section of the launcher. It allows you to switch apps just by using the gesture area.
@Jonathan Moll: From Sprint's press release: "The Palm Pre phone will be available from Sprint on June 6 for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year service agreement on an Everything Data plan or Business Essentials with Messaging and Data plan."
So now everyone in the Palm Fiefdom not working on the Pre pretty much feels like a second class serf that can be tarred, feathered, and sued by their more regal colleagues.
I had a chance to play with it today at Bell. Its nothing fancy, but its EASILY the best palm device to come out, possibly ever. Its just a solid WM device with a really odd shape and design (it feels almost slippery). But really should wait until the Pre drops...

Why the HELL would you want to HotSync the pre?

So ya, why would I want it back?
