It's like they're saying what none of us were thinking, but all realized we totally should've been thinking this whole time, because dang, that's actually a pretty good idea, kinda!
@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher:: It's not. You turn off the breaker, unscrew the old outlet, remove the wires by unscrewing a little clamp screw, then put those wires on the new outlet and screw that back into the wall. 5 minutes, tops.
@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher:: I'm sure the USB ports are prewired to the outlet plugs. There can't really be any more wires because there will be a finite number of them sticking out of the hole in the wall when you remove the old outlet.
As far as safety goes, I would suggest a slight adjustment of replacing the single outlet box with a dual where one side could be the two power outlets with your USB connectors on the second outlet side. A home inspector is not likely to have an issue with that since the items have plenty of room for safety.
However, I would recommend even more highly just waiting a year until there are units pre-built for this purpose and sold at your neighborhood Home Depot. They already have HDMI plates for your wall, so USB is not far behind: [www.uniqueproductsonline.com]
The key selling point is the huge black block at the end making this a martial arts geek weapon of choice for taking down USB2 users in your home town technology ghetto.
I agree that without any must-have devices to plug into it, this is nothing more than a propeller-head coffee table discussion.

Could these be used for networking? Home server cloud computing?

That said - the concept is a great one.
