If I remember, the CrunchPad runs its own flavor of Linux. That is certainly appealing, but in the time since it was conceived, there's been a lot more attention paid to Android. I still hold out hope that the CrunchPad will turn out to be a very cool, useful device but I wonder if they might have just timed it wrong and missed the biggest trend it operating systems. Of course, even if they have, there's still a good chance that the platform will be hackable and that Android and Chrome might be put on it. Either way, I've got a piggy bank slowly filling up with enough scratch to buy either the CrunchPad or the next closest thing from Apple. #crunchpad Reply

Crunchpad was dead when they tried for an extremely niche product and didn't just release it right off the bat.

They may have picked up a couple of hundred sales at one point but now the concept of a fully functional multitouch tablet is just around the corner. I'm not blowing $400 on something to browse the web on. #crunchpad

@tande04: The problem resides in what they offer: a multitouch tablet to browse the web, something we all have since 2007. I can do that and so much more on my iPod Touch. #crunchpad Reply

I'm not sure if it's just me but I think the Droid v iPhone debate had me favoring Mike over anyone else.

People are quick to call things dead (Hip-Hop is dead, Rock is Dead etc.) and crown people victors. Nokia is still very much in the game, they are losing ground for sure but they are still the number 1 phone maker in the world. They better shift gears to keep that spot but you can't call them dead just because Apple's iPhone is selling extremely well (I mean EXTREMELY well).

But with Droid and iPhone, Mike was pointing out the strengths of the core phone while everyone else was talking about the iPhone's community. Comparing the Android Facebook App to the iPhone Facebook App has nothing really to do with Google and Apple, but more so their community. The iPhone has a strong community, partly why I have one, and Android's community is slowly but surely rising. When comparing the phones, Apples to Apples, you compare the core, not the extended use. Not to say that it should be dismissed but they two different things. Compare the phone to the phone, then the community to the community. #crunchpad

@Pawky: But you move much past a 3.5" screen and the concept becomes unusable.

How are you going to get to 'g' and 'h'? I can't thumb type that on a 10" screen. Maybe I'll kinda shuffle my grip to the middle where I'll inevitably drop my $400 internet browser.

Soft keyboards do work but there is a limit based on ergonomics and human physiology. There are concepts to get around it (split the keyboard in half and put it on the corners of each side of the screen) but an iPhone-esq QWERTY screen won't work.

Which is again why I continue to think that all future tablets are going to stick with the stylus in some form or another. #crunchpad

@tande04: Just because you have a larger screen doesnt mean the keyboard has to be bigger. You could find a happy medium where the keyboard gets larger to accommodate people with big hands but is still small enough to work well on a 10" screen. #crunchpad Reply

Image of tande04 tande04 11/15/09

@TheClap: I'm not sure what you're getting at. The physiology of a person is still the limiting factor.

Even a small keyboard centered in the middle wouldn't work. If anything it would be worse. Then you're precariously holding on to it by the center of the screen. #crunchpad

@tande04: I think we are all missing an important factor here. There is more to the world of touchscreen based input than a keyboard. There is also hand writing recognition. That would be perfect for this device. One, It's not as awkward to do with one hand, and two, it uses the screen's full size to the advantage. #crunchpad Reply

@tande04: Go pick up a DVD case and tell me that's not the perfect size-- 6.5-7". #crunchpad Reply

Image of tande04 tande04 11/15/09

@soggy_cheerio: But thats half the size that this thing is supposed to be. Thats smaller then any rumored tablet out there actually.

And I will say its not the perfect size. Its the same thing I've questioned since the beginning of all this tablet love. Since when is bigger better? The tech world has been trying to shrink things since it started and now all of the sudden they've hit the bottom so they're going back up? A DVD case may be fine for the feeling of the keyboard (still think I'd have trouble getting to 'g' and 'h' the way I'd naturally hold it though) but whats the sacrifice? I can't put it in my pocket discretely so I'm going to have to start carrying another bag around just to keep it with me. I'll pass. As mentioned above I've got a device that can do this and more and fits in my pocket.

@pɹɐoqʎǝʞuǝʞoɹq: You and I aren't missing it but I'm surprised at how many people you still see saying it won't happen. For some reason there are a lot of people that equate the stylus to the failure of tablet PCs in the first place which can't be further from the truth. People seem to think you just blow up a iPhone and call it good which is ridiculous.

If you're building a table you're trying to replicate its inspiration. A piece of paper. Its the only thing that really makes sense. I'm not going to sit at a desk and awkwardly type on a touchscreen but I will sit there and scribble out some notes. There seems to be some impression that apple (since their tablet is the one always discussed) won't go backwards and use a stylus like device but I agree its the only way to go. #crunchpad

Image of pɹɐoqʎǝʞuǝʞoɹq pɹɐoqʎǝʞuǝʞoɹq 11/15/09

@tande04: I'm not certain thought that a stylus is NEEDED, but rather a convienence. When I worked at Circuit City, the HP TouchSmart was on display and it had optical touch, so it could handle stylus or finger. I found that even writing with my finger was just fine. Granted, that was 22inches and not 10 like the crunch pad, but for casual surfing and putting in basic URLs I think it would be just fine. But styluses get lost and the only decent uses of the stylus and fingers require active styluses and those cost money. And it's another thing to carry. The purpose of the crunchpad is to have something to curl up with on the couch. Switching between a pen and finger might not be the most attractive option for most people in that situation. #crunchpad Reply

Image of tande04 tande04 11/15/09

@pɹɐoqʎǝʞuǝʞoɹq: I still think its a must. Fingers just aren't precise enough for many applications. All you have to do is look at apple's new touch POS and realize its at least important enough for signing a name. Maybe for basic urls you could get away with it. For the crunchpad you might get away with it. Anything past basic web is a no go in my book though. I'm not going to take notes with my finger. I'm not going to draw with my finger. #crunchpad Reply

Image of TheClap TheClap 11/15/09

@tande04: Yeah, I was thinking of holding it in one hand and typing it with the other, which means I completely overlooked the difficulty in using two hand typing (which should really just be two thumbed typing right?) I have pretty big hands so maybe this isnt as large an issue for me as it is for most people (I dont really think my hands are that big but thats not what other people tell me...) #crunchpad Reply

Image of pɹɐoqʎǝʞuǝʞoɹq pɹɐoqʎǝʞuǝʞoɹq 11/15/09

@tande04: Oh, yeah, for those applications, it would ludicrous to try to write a report or paint with your finger. I totally agree. I'm just saying that the crunchpad, which is 100% for web consumption. But, if you plan on doing what I am planning, and loading Win7 or OS X, you could use this with its capacitive screen:

@TheClap: Falling back on the old hunt and peck would probably work just fine for just a simple web browser like this. After all I'm sure it will be like any computer web browser and all I'd have to get in is 'gi' before it took me to gizmodo. Anything past that though would suck. I couldn't even imagine trying to type out a comment here if I was single keying in the whole thing.

I always say that though then I think about Star Trek. They all got around just fine with only one hand and one finger on their tablets. Data was an android though so the comparison is hardly fair. #crunchpad

@tande04: So get yourself a bluetooth or USB keyboard. One of those highly portable foldable keyboards would work wonders with it.

Got to think outside the box.

PS How cool would it be if they tossed in a wireless N card in an external, portable hard drive? You know, keep the hard drive, foldable keyboard, and so on in your backpack. If you just want to listen to mp3s you can play them through a bluetooth headset and keep the pad in the backpack. Have it all synced up wirelessly and you'd be the new Johnny Pneumonic. #crunchpad

@ian.nai: No cause a bluetooth or USB keyboard is right in the box.

Why am I going to carry around a tablet and a keyboard? If I wanted to do that I'd just get a netbook. Same thing for the docking station concept you always see batted around. Its slightly more reasonable but I think most people would just use whatever dedicated computer they already have in place.

When people started talking about these they were bordering on revolutionary. Now more and more the ideas that people bring up are just steps backwards. No one is going to buy a machine that is useless unless they sit down, put it in a docking station, or pullout a keyboard. I have that now. #crunchpad

I'm a graphist.
For that price, if it has some nice features as a graphic table (being complementary to the computer, not an apart device) and is a good comix and web reader to carry around, it would buy one with no hesitation.

If it could turn to be a good keyboard too by popping some buttons (something like this:
[gizmodo.com] ) I wouldn't complain (graphic tables and keyboard are hard to fit together on a desktop).

Ho and if it could be a glasses-free stereoscopic screen, managing gaze tracking, and include a 3 dimensional picture projector...

What? They did say they wanna make it perfect.

As neat as these tablets are conceptually, I really have trouble figuring out who their target market is or why that market would choose a tablet over a netbook. #crunchpad Reply

Image of dagamer34 dagamer34 11/15/09

@Arken: Because when you compare the amount of time reading compared to using the keyboard, it makes a lot of sense to ditch the keyboard completely so that you can make the device slimmer and stick in a larger battery if necessary.

Your average person spends far more time consuming content than creating it (everything from an e-mail to writing Word document) when they're on the go. An onscreen keyboard will do for most people, or even better would be a built-in speech-to-text engine, but I think it's a few years down the road before that method of input is really perfected to be used in every day scenarios.

@Arken: I believe these devices were geared ( or should be ) toward the tech designers & art markets but these items lack the ability to respond to drawing/ sketching in the manner they should... so most ppl just go back to good old paper and pencil ( or a workstation...unfortunately u cant carry that around and show/edit ur work/ideas...so we still need a tablet)...I dont see any practical uses myself unless ppl want to play with the gadget and throw money away...
In less than 6 months this item will be obsolete...I would just wait for the rumored Apple tablet or MS courier... #crunchpad

@dagamer34: Needing to bend your neck downwards by almost ninety degrees when it rests on your lap to perform even simple touch gestures or multitouch (as holding such a big device with one hand near your face and touching the screen is very awkward) will prove a major disadvantage to this or any similar device compared to a netbook.

You can add a vertical stand when its placed on a desk but I feel thats pointless for a device designed for mobility. #crunchpad

@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher: : The "Apple tax" can only go so far. If they were to produce a tablet for an asking price of $1,000, they would pretty much have to offer some serious kit on board to make it as enticing as a unibody Macbook, like an official Modbook. If it ends up being a giant ARM-powered iPod touch, no way would it hit over $1,000. Not even the most rabid of fanboys would scoop that shit up. #crunchpad Reply

Image of PurpleMonkeyDishwasher: PurpleMonkeyDishwash...: 11/04/09

@Kaiser-Machead: Yeah that's true. I guess I was extrapolating the cost based on the iPhone. If you try to buy that anywhere without a contract it could easily run you like 500-600 dollars as well so it would logical that this would be at least a couple hundred dollars more. I do think it would have a lot of better features though which would make it closer in ability to the Macbook which is also in the $1000 range. #crunchpad Reply

@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher: : Well, I have yet to see any device that size with a multitouch screen for under $1000. It's not impossible, but screen size accounts for a good percentage of the cost of a device. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the HP TouchSmart, I believe, is the only full-size device with multitouch capabilities right now. And those things get expensive real fast. I think there's still room for this thing to approach or exceed $1000, depending on what features-.....

...Wait, what the heck am I doing?! Why are we discussing the price of a product we don't even know exists, under an article for a product completely unrelated, and with a direct link to the Courier, which has way more to actually talk about?

In theory, one could just have a few different phones and switch the SIM card. I've heard this is popular with "the Europeans" but I have yet to see one of my friends actually buy a second handset.

It seems like the advantage here is that it would be cheaper to buy additional "jackets" than additional phones. I would love a small phone for going out, a jacket with big screen and buttons for playing a game on the subway and a third jacket with a physical keyboard.

Also, isn't Nokia owning the non-smart phone market now and reaping the 66%-profit-loss rewards of that move? Have at it Modu, sounds like a juicy piece of market share.

@The Lab: As a "european", I can promise that very few people do this. I know of people with duel sim phones, but most people with more than one phone have it only because we have a higher reliance on Pay as you go, so can easily take a sim out and swap it into a new phone when we feel like it. A Mac compatible sounded like a pretty fantastic idea to me, up until the point that Pystar released their first product. So, I guess you are damned if you don't release it, and damned if you do.

For example, that Keyport looks pretty fantastic, but then I think about how I actually use my keys and realize it is completely impractical. I probably would not even be able to turn the thing to start my car, and I suspect it would get stuck near the door jam of my house, too. Neat idea - but, for me, sort of happy it does not actually exist. Reply
