I have one of these in chrome. I got it and put the whole thing together last week. If you've never taken a 360 controller apart, figure it's going to take you a while. The worst part for me was getting the triggers out to swap with the translucent ones in the kit, past that, soldering, then lining up everything correctly.
Here's how it works. In the box you get 4 things-
top half of controller shell
bottom half of controller shell
2 triggers
You pull your old controller apart, toss the shell and triggers, and reassemble. Buttons come with the new shell because of the way they're lighted. There is also a button at the top of the controller near the 'connect' button that turns the lights on/off (they time out after 5 minutes or so though of being on)
There are 3 solder connections you have to make to get the LEDS to work. Not real hard to get to, but if you're new to soldering you're going to cry.
Final product is very nice looking, lights are cool. The best part by far is that you use the stock circuit board with the kit, so your sticks and d-pad are exactly the same. Triggers are the same size as well, so no change there. So far I'm very happy with my controller.
@RamV10: forgot this, if you get one, I found this install tutorial to be REALLY REALLY handy. I bought my shell from here...I initially just wanted some replacement thumbsticks for a controller my dog got ahold of, but ended up going all out.
@mattycakes: Its a shell that you replace over the white/black/red shell you have. For the LEDs to work you must have soldering skills :). I have the Chrome/Blue version of this controller when it first came out; and yes, it's worth it.
@georgi55: Clearly I need another cup of coffee this morning. I thought they were selling an already modded controller for super cheap, and I was about to send in my resume to be their new business manager.
@2-7offsuit is ioos: it makes a difference, but not a massive one. i used to swap out the colors of the ring and you could tell the difference just switching to brighter leds.
@2-7offsuit is ioos: I followed the link and it shows a button on the top of the controller to turn off the lights if need be. So at least you won't have to have it on all the time.
Nice. I was never a fan of offset thumbsticks or placement of black/clear buttons. Then, unlike most people, I found the DualShock 2 to be even better than the SNES controller - it fits my hands so well I wouldn't even have to be conscious to hang onto it.
How about vice versa. I have a PS3 but think the XBOX 360's controller fits my big ass hands better. And the side triggers are in a more comfortable position. Who makes a Bizzaro XCM Cross Fire Adapter?
I dunno, I intentionally disable rumble for fighting games. And, at least for street fighter, I don't really see the point in having memory buttons. I mean, with the input leniency in SF4, no single move is particularly difficult to pull off, and longer strings of moves is risky if the first one gets blocked.
@shadydentist: lol yeah nothing like the first move being blocked or worse jumped over and you continue to swing at the air while your opponent hits you in the back.
I find it trivial and ridiculous to exhibit such strong emotional feelings towards controllers such as "hate" and "love".
A controller is simply a controller, and both common sense tells us that the Xbox 360's controller and the PS3's controller are not only reasonable comfortable to use and pragmatic, but aren't all that different either.
Actually..... they are completely different..... and each has their own strengths and weaknesses. Anyone who can't tell the differences..... can't be a very skilled gamer. The 360 controller is far superior for shooters of any kind. The PS3 controller is superior for fighters. It depends upon what type of games you like to play as to which you think is the better controller. Also what type of grip you like to use..... if you use a "claw" grip.... you probably prefer the PS3 controller. If you use a standard grip..... you probably prefer the 360 controller.
I might get it for Killzone 2 (if it doesn't use the D-Pad for quick switching) or Street Fighter IV (So I can buy an arcade stick that's compatible with Windows without having to find drivers), but other than that, I'd just prefer the Dualshock 3.
@CatboyMac's angry girlfriend: You do know the PS3 fightpads and arcade sticks are compatible with ANY OS correct? They are "standard" USB devices, so you don't need to use MS's crappy drivers.
@Lite: Now with 37% less sobriety.: Seriously, that thing has enough chrome, buttons, and lights. Is that for activating 3 wheel motion on my car? What about pancaking?

I guess I have fighting games on the mind.

@Bertone77: Wouldn't the controller be red then?

Of course, for FPS, I play on my PC (love thems mouse and keyboards), so maybe that's my issue?
