Definitely an interesting idea, but don't people usually recommend putting the sub in the corner of the room? I can never remember these crazy rules the audiophiles come up with.
Sound bars don't really make sense to me when they start getting this expensive. At 2k you can build a much better sound system and even pay someone $500 to run wire through your walls.
I actually bought the original when it first came out. Had to grease some palms to get it shipped over to the US. It was definitely worth it. It does have a few glaring holes in it that I know can be fixed via software (such as it has no song mode, just patterns), so I'm awfully curious as to where you found that it is getting an OS update. #tenorionoorange
"To coincide with the unveiling of the new model Yamaha have also confirmed a free forthcoming firmware update for current TENORI-ON customers. Following a range of user comments Yamaha are currently in the process of creating a new operating system which is expected to be available from January 2010.The update will address a number of areas including the synching of TENORI-ON to external DAW applications and offer an improved MIDI sync implementation." #tenorionoorange
Does it say anything about the product itself when I see this and, in my head, justify it's $1k purchase price? Or just my lack of reality when it comes to impulse buyer decision-making?
God help me if I ever see on of these in the wild. And for the record, I'd just as soon spring for the original model. #tenorionoorange
That looks pretty freaking cool, but why not just use the iPhone's built in stereo bluetooth streaming ability coupled with a specially developed app instead of some clunky add on? Why not just make a charging stand to use it like a alarm like that other stand you all covered a while ago? I just don't see the point in the iPhone attachment as is. It seems to me like Yamaha kind of missed the inherit strength of a platform like the iPhone?
@badhatharry: No no, you both kind of missed the point I was trying to make. These speaker deals that Yamaha does are extremely functional and aesthetically beautiful IMO, but they're too big to sit on a sensibly sized night stand and haven't progressed much for that matter since they were initially designed and introduced...
Why not make a smaller satellite base to charge the iPhone and act as a kickstand that makes your iPhone into a stand alone alarm clock, while also connecting the whole deal to the speaker for music output through a elegant software solution and the already included stereo bluetooth? Quickly glancing at just the picture, I thought that that was just what it was... Imagine using your iPhone/iPod Touch as a visual remote (like one of those screen based harmony remotes connected to a Media PC) to play/shuffle/arrange the music coming out of the speaker without ever having to actually connect it to the speaker base, OR by attaching some horribly designed clunky dongle?
They need a more than just hardware now, they also need an elegant SOFTWARE solution to marry this hardware to IMO to get people to buy just another new iPod speaker, which many manufacturers in this area haven't really thought to do yet... Take it beyond the hardware, you're already half way there Yamaha! The iPhones and iPod Touches of the world are more than just iPods now!

What makes this shockingly realistic is the fact that people in the background don't shut up and listen. Having people in an audience yammer away while you perform should be the musical Turing test.
No one wants robotic pop stars. No one is going to care if it flashes a little peek at its DC-in, or is caught giving handjobs to robosexual perverts while playing Small Wonder on a continuous loop. Now, if it pulls a Bjork and savagely beats a reporter on the street, and ultimately starts engaging in a riotous bloodbath, THAT would be something.
Yes, but, can she have a mental breakdown, marry a loser, shave her head, flash us her stuff, kidnap her own kids and be placed in custody of her daddy like Britters? Robots arent perfect yet then are they?

I'd bet a million dollars it doesn't anywhere near perfect though...
I can't imagine that woofer being any bigger than 4" in that enclosure.

What's the consensus on soundbar technology? Should I get a 5.1 system instead?

Honestly, I think a Harmony would do better at managing the complexity of a home theatre. Good thought, though.
