Why iPhone TV Apps Are Doomed to Mediocrity
CNN's iPhone App Makes Other News Apps Look Lazy

09/29/09
It's not cool to want to be cool. That's called "trying too hard".

And buying a Mac instead of a Windows machine because you don't want to be left behind with inferior technology seems very reasonable to me?
Furthermore, you don't have to try very hard to buy an Apple product. Just walk into a store and use your credit card, it's the same as everywhere else.

Did you get star-status for being such a good troll? There really is no justice it seems.

@pixelpushing: He got star-status because trolls are adorable!

How about we (we as in me, almost the ENTIRE staff of EVERY tech site in existence, and a good amount of readers on this blog) use them because they are stable, powerful, versatile machines with an OS that gives us the ability to do things so complicated with the generation of a single service that it would take a solid day of downloading crap ware on your winbox to even try to emulate my work flow.
Face it, you know nothing about computing, and certainly not Mac's and more certainly not UNIX. So please take your star over to fleshbot and eff it.

Shh! keep the whole Mac thing a secret! Don't want the word to get out about this underground niche product.

I actually watch CNN.COM/LIVE all the time when I'm working during the day.
I think it's WAY of ahead of it's time.
You might call it "2nd tier" but you still get a lot of the same stories that are on CNN, plus 3 different channels with raw footage/feeds (speeches, rallies, new conferences) Also I have to say the anchors are pretty cool.
They do replay the same segments a little too often, but so does CNN. There is no other channel that has this sort of live free format on the internet (that I know of).
Plus, being that it's being broadcast on the web, there is MUCH more interaction with the viewers possible. They constantly have polls, comments and webcam interviews coming in that they use to show what the viewers are saying.

Why we won't see CNN, Fox News, or MSNBC broadcast their news networks on the iphone anytime soon is that they don't have any reason to go around the cable networks and end up on the internet. CNN, MSNBC and Fox have world standing and they don't have the financial capability to double cross the cable companies, while Al Jazerra is trying to establish it as a world news leader along side the BBC, France 24 and CNN, so they need an iPhone app in order to grow its viewership.

While it is just news, and not, say, movies or something of that nature, I personally don't see many people who would see an application on a small iPhone screen to be a replacement for traditional TV.

and in the distance comes the wounded cry of CNN the website.

Been playing with the app for a bit. Well worth the 2 frickin dollars.
And here's an example of what the "ads" look like. Not obtrusive in the least and don't bother me at all.
09/29/09
but sadly, I have a strong moral opinion: either an app is free with ads, or I pay for an app without ads. I will not pay to be advertised to. end of story.
CNN- wtf?

I actually rushed to the app store to buy this, but it's not there in Canada yet, so I came here to see what was up - I'm glad I did. Though truly, only interstitial video ads would REALLY make me mad. The app would be worthless then.

I'll take your advice and give em the two bucks. Plus I already like most of CNN's reporting.

@Prey521: Because this is the alternative.
