Gee, the only thing were we allowed to build were some lame duck shaped note holders. Believe it or not, back in the day, girls were not permitted to take "shop" and boys were not allowed to take "home ec" but for a week each year they switched. I sure as hell hope that has changed. Think of the male chefs and the female engineers we missed out on due to stupid gender sterotypes.
@Curves: Heh - I remember those days. I'm sure I would have benefitted from a home ec class myself, and many girls I know are fine carpenters and welders.
Sadly, though, it's my understanding that many high schools have done away with shop classes due to liability concerns.
@FredicvsMaximvs: I am actually in favor of both being part of the cirriculum for all students. I need to know how to use tools, sew buttons back on and cook, as does anyone. These are life skills and should be taught to everyone, as should basic economic skills (ie-how to balance a checkbook and what credit cards can do to you).
FYI-I aced both Home Ec and Shop and still have the lame duck shaped letter holder somewhere.
@Piker247: Uh huh, and having the boys come to Home Ec once a week so the girls can feed them, sew for them and do their laundry as the natural order intended. ;)
The lightbulb is being used as a power resistor to quickly collapse the electric field of each coil as the projectile goes through it. Otherwise the coil would speed the slug up as it approached the center, and slow it down as it passed through the other side. Once the slug gets in the center one a coil, you need to dump the current out of the coil so the next coil in line can be switched on.
It's a linear motor after all, you need to keep the magnetic field in front of the slug (rotor), pulling it along.
With a rail gun, the projectile is a link in the circuit, so you just pour several thousand amps across the rails and let Lenz' Law take care of the rest.
wow, you guys are pretty busy making fun of this guys toy. Stop trying to show everyone how smart you are and do something yourself that might be worth a picture and a few words... I think this guy's toy is awesome. He should patent it and sell it to mattel.
@nospamsam: Really? You call it a toy, yourself...
Pot -> Kettle = Black.
All the criticism is coming from the fact that people aren't sure if this is supposed to be a toy, or a semi-serious attempt at a proof of concept for a real weapon.

Maybe they could integrate slowly by letting the girls come into shop class once a week and clean up the place. ;)

That it took him 40 hours is though, and it is neat looking.

Pretty slow, but it's good to be making progress toward more impressive mobile gauss weaponry.
I wonder what it sounds like...
