Sometimes I walk through metal detectors in airports with my Mac Pro balanced on my head and buckets of water in each hand. Sometimes the detectors go off, sometimes they don't. Depends on the airport. Thing is, since I dress in a Burka when I travel, most security personnel assume I'm one of those tribal women they've seen on the Discovery Channel ferrying cooking supplies back to my village, and let me pass.

So, even though I don't have 12 screws and a metal plate in my collarbone, I guess what I'm saying is that I can kind of relate.

@frigg: I walk through with a chocolate revolver. Then I laugh when it doesn't go off.

The plate and screws are not sufficient to set off a metal detector. I have a 10-hole plate from the same ORIF procedure on my collarbone, and have never set off a detector. The wand they use for the search will go off when they pass over the area.

@TonyLaelap: you'd think, but it sets off the hand wands every time. Ask Jason, he's seen it when we travel together for work, at least 6 or 7 times. i'll get a video next time.

Brian, why is it I couldn't read this article past your anecdote about "screw shavings"?

I think the extra oxygen he injects into his bloodstream is still much cooler.
