Electronic paper (e-paper) looks like conventional paper and the bright wash of color it generates uses the ambient light for rendition, just like conventional paint, so no backlight is needed. Which means that the vividness of the color is maintained, even in bright outdoor conditions. Philips' technology allows different colors of ink to be built into one layer with each color controlled separately. This means the layer can be transparent, the same color as any one of the inks or even a mixture of multiple colors. Moreover, the saturation of each individual color can be controlled accurately – so any shade can be produced. Recently, Philips successfully realized a simplified, yet advanced version of its e-paper technology: e-skin. Since it is less complicated and less expensive to realize, it enables new applications. And because e-skin makes use of the ambient light, it is an inherently energy-efficient system, making it particularly suitable for application in portable devices as well.

While portable devices might be the focus in the short-term, this sort of technology could also be used for larger equipment and even wallpaper in your home. In other words, it might not be long before we can change the color and the entire ambiance of a room with the push of a button. [Philips via Pocket-Lint]

<![CDATA[American Nintendo DSi Dons a Pretty Pink Dress, Tasteful White Slip]]> Nintendo of America's just started shipping the DSi in two new colors, adding to the preexisting blue and black units: White, for a subtle, decidedly ungadgety look, and pink for the lay-deez dudes who carry garishly colored gadgets ironically. <![CDATA[Naked Ladies Slipping on Banana Peels on the DS]]> We've seen a Disney artist draw some technically proficient images on the iPhone, but for some reason—maybe it's the hardware, maybe it's the content—we just weren't as captivated.

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser."99 Dodgy Slips" is the lovechild of Weta artists Greg Broadmore and Christian Pearce. Using a Nintendo DS homebrew app called Colors, they depicted 99 nudes slipping on bananas with a rare and stunning accuracy. In this clip, we just get a taste of unadulterated estrogen losing its balance on the most comedic of fruits, and the taste is sweet. [99DS via Kotaku]

<![CDATA[Pentax K2000 DSLR Now Comes In Cookies 'n' Cream White]]> Mmmm: the Pentax K2000, a well-reviewed Nikon/Canon competitor, will now be available in a limited edition white.

No pricing info yet, but a boring old black K2000 will set you back around $800, so expect this "extremely limited" version to carry a bit of an overage. Its two lenses—the kit 18-55mm and an additional 50-200mm zoom will also get the white and black treatment. But this is hot-looking—why aren't there more colors for entry-level DSLRs other than black and hideous silver-painted plastic? [Press Release via CNET]

<![CDATA[Ninendo DS In Red Mario Bros Limited Edition On Black Friday]]> It's not a special Black Friday deal, but DS fans may think it's a bit special all the same: Nintendo's launching a limited edition Mario Red DS bearing the M logo this Friday. It'll also come with a bundled copy of New Super Mario Bros, and it'll set you back $150. There's another limited edition bundle too, mixing up the ice-blue DS with a custom matching-color carrying case and a copy of Brain Age, for the same price...but it sounds like way less fun than Mario. <![CDATA[Color E-Paper Debuts on Waterproof MP3 Player]]> E-ink and e-paper are the display buzzwords of the moment, but generally the devices are mono colored... until now. And though KDDI showed a concept color e-paper display recently, it looks like the first device to market sporting a colored e-paper display will be an MP3 player from Freestyle Audio. Qualcomm have come up with the paper, and it works by having multiple layers in the display: light is partially reflected at each layer, and due to wavelength filtering and interference between the light the colors are generated. Choice of color is achieved by varying the distance between the layers electrostatically. Clever stuff indeed...and of course it's instantly got us wondering about the possibilities for the Kindle 3. <![CDATA[HTC Touch Diamond Pops Up in Seven Colors]]> We were surprised to see the HTC Diamond just coming in white, but those in France now have the opportunity to pick up the Diamond in one of seven colors: White, blue, brown, fuchsia, yellow, purple or rose. Unless you're packing up to move abroad, chances are you'll never see most, if any of these Skittlesfied options. But we thought we'd show you just to rub it in. Happy Monday! <![CDATA[New Zune Colors Revealed in 3.0 Software]]> While digging through the new Zune 3.0 software, a Zuneboards forum member discovered several new colors on 120GB and 16GB Zunes for those who want to branch out from basic black. From the looks of things a blue, white and red version are in the mix—available in different color configurations that could include a black or silver backing. Obviously, none of this has been confirmed yet—but hopefully there will be more to come. [zuneboards]

<![CDATA[Garmin Has Style Lapse: Releases Faux-Diamond Enhanced Nuvi GPSs]]> Garmin's had a tiny stylistic brain-fart with some new Nuvi GPSs. Imagine a cheesy glimmering gadget suckered-on to your windshield, sending glittering—and distracting—shafts of light into your car... that's kind of what you've got in the "light rose" and "black diamond" editions of the Nuvi 250 and 760. They're covered in colored faux-diamonds. Yuck. The red, white and blue editions (also new) we can appreciate. But in a few years, in a look back at recent gadget history, crystal-covered GPS units will be consigned to the "what the hell were they thinking?" category. [Aving via Navigadget]

<![CDATA[Sony Has Upgrade Frenzy: Tweaks many Vaio PCs, Including A-Series Mega Laptop]]> We brought you a three new Vaios last week, but Sony Japan seems to be in the mood to tweak much of the rest of its Vaio line of laptops and desktops. There are new machines in the A-series, C-series, L-series and R-series. The RT50 is aimed at professional users, labeled "photo edition," with an anti-glare screen and a screen shield. CS60B is a 14.1-inch laptop in numerous colors and 802.11n Wi-Fi, and the LJ53B is one of Sony's stylish desktop all-in-one media-players. But the AW70 and AW50 are the most interesting: monster, 18.4-inch powerful laptops with Blu-ray burners and HDMI-out, designed as desktop replacements.

The AW50 and AW70 have what Sony's calling the largest LCD laptop screens in the world, and its mated to pretty serious machines. Like the new R-series desktops, these new A-series machines are aimed at video and photography professionals, so the screen meets Adobe's RGB standard 100%, both come with extra pro-level software and have a Core 2 Duo T9400 purring inside at 2.53GHz. 500GB hard drives and GeForce 9600M GT graphics complete the package, but mean the machines weigh in at around 8.6 pounds.

Prices for these machines go from $1,500 for the C-series to the A-series at around $3,000, and though there's no official word, we can probably expect these upgrades to arrive in the rest of the world soon. Updated

<![CDATA[Colored Wiis, Redesigned DS: Coming Never]]> OK, it's a bit dramatic for us to say "coming never," but we shouldn't expect Wiis in multiple snazzy colors (you know, the ones promised by Nintendo when the Wii was announced) or a redesigned DS (it could be RAZR-thin!) anytime soon. Instead, it sounds like Nintendo is more focused on getting each device "into the hands of more people." In layman's terms, that means "making more money selling the crap that you already won't stop buying anyway." [IGN via Maxconsole]

<![CDATA[RGBy Lamp is LED Color-Changing Toy for Color Scheme Fanatics]]> We showed you the impressive RGBy tabletop last year, but designers Makoto Hirahara and Shinya Matsuyama have gone and commercialized a new chameleon color-change lamp. The RBGy lamp is a simple battery-powered gizmo that changes color to match whatever object you've got it sitting on. You simply press to capture, and it copies the color by varying its LED illumination. It's hard to think of a purpose for it, other than impressing your date by matching the moodlighting to her dress... but there are cheaper ways to impress, given that each 2.75-inch steel and plastic lamp costs $199. <![CDATA[Sweety is Color-Changing, Squeezable Interactive Stress Gizmo]]> Designer Haishu Zhang has created the Sweety concept gadget to help soothe away people's stresses. Apparently he's designed to be your 24-hour listener, so I guess you just sound-off in his direction rather than at a real person. And Sweety reacts with graphic patterns and color changes that, um, help you somehow. I'm a little confused how that bit's supposed to work, but I do understand it's interactive mode: when the rage hits you, you can just wrestle and pound the little bugger's soft body. And that's therapy. [Yanko design]

<![CDATA[Creative Zen Getting Bubblegum Pink Makeover]]> Looks like the Zune isn't the only PMP to be getting a color makeover, Creative's Zen is in on it too. The new model was spotted at Wal Mart, where it is retailing at $69.99 for a 2GB unit, with no other capacities listed. As far as we can tell, the pink Zen is ready for immediate shipping, despite the fact it is not available at Creative's own online store. The new addition has me thinking it is time for a pink gadget in my arsenal; admit it, you want one as well. [Wal Mart via Geek&Hype; Thanks, pickupjojo!]

<![CDATA[iPod Nano Getting Purple Paint Job?]]> This image from a Circuit City advertisement seems to show the iPod nano dressed up in yet another sickening color—this time deep purple. The advertisement was spotted in a circular today, but we have not seen it for ourselves. Has anyone glimpsed a shot of the picture in question? And do we really need purple to add to the list of nauseating colors the iPod nano already comes in? Sentences ending in questions aside, we have seen the iPod shuffle gain a similar purple treatment, so it does not seem imposible. We'll let you know as soon as we hear any official word on the potential update. [Connection Podcast]

<![CDATA[Samsung Ultra Music Phone: Colors Revealed, Probably Match Beyoncé's Underwear]]>

We all knew Beyoncé was fronting Samsung's Ultra Phone, and we all guessed that the dual-screen cell would probably come in red, white, and black (we were so thankful they nixed it in pink), but did we have a clue that it would come in juicy orange and fabulous electric blue? Nope, we'll freely admit that we didn't see that coming and we LOVE it. And yes, we are that shallow.
