I sure was in 2000. Hell, I still am. But I think I'd be able to navigate everything in a more manageable way if only I had the right... mouse pad.

Last time I used a mouse pad was when I was when I couldn't find my dog's frisbee. But if I had this little wonder, I'd create a little shrine to it and would bow down to its excellence. No doggy teeth marks on this one please! The MySmart, which was made by Keytronic and aimed at novice Web users, was a $20 device with buttons and input ports a go go.

This decade has seen a shift on the button issue: lots of tactile things to press used to signify that something was high tech. Now, anything with lots of buttons just looks like it is trying hard to not look like an iPhone. This thing's buttons could bring you straight to CompUSA! Online, that is. It could also store passwords and bookmarks. On the site was the explanation:

We believe that the Internet experience shouldn't be confusing. So we developed a simple and secure way to access, surf and shop the Internet.

See, I agree. But the Internet is confusing. To use the vocabulary of 2000, it's a network of a billion million interconnected tunnels to computers. A super highway, if you will. I think that if it weren't confusing, I'd be confused.

The MySmart didn't last, even though its site promised that the first 100,000 would be given away for free (shipping not included). [Archived site from 2000]

<![CDATA[CompUSA Re-Opening With 30 New Stores, Invents "Retail 2.0"]]> CompUSA is attempting to make a comeback from bankruptcy with 30 new brick-and-mortar stores and a new philosophy they have dubbed "retail 2.0."

"We have invented this idea of retail 2.0," says Gilbert Fiorentino, chief executive of the Technology Products Group at Systemax, now parent company of CompUSA. Fiorentino is also the founder of Tiger Direct, a web only electronics retailer and another subsidiary of Systemax. "Every screen in every CompUSA store is now connected to the internet and making buying a richer experience for customers," he says.

"We do the same thing with laptops, desktops and monitors," says Fiorentino. "We are using tech to change the retail experience for the customer and giving them access to all the information on the internet anytime they want during the buying process." And there are no restrictions. Users can surf the internet, check their Facebook or even Twitter if they want, says Fiorentino.

I don't know if "invented" is the appropriate word. More like "ripped off" from Apple—but it does mean that they are giving customers carte blanche to shop around online for information before making a purchase in their store. A bold move, considering that some other gadget retailers don't even want you to connect with their own website while shopping in the store.

Will this philosophy lead to a new, less sucky CompUSA with competitive prices? One can only hope. [Wired Gadget Lab]

<![CDATA[Black Friday Horror Stories]]> While nothing can match the horror of workers getting killed by stupid mobs and shootings in the middle of a Toys R Us, we keep receiving horror tales about other Black Fridays gone wrong. The biggest one is about how CompUSA/Tigerdirect online "sale"—the one with the Sony Vaio TT with a $5,000 discount was apparently a total disaster, according to readers. Update: A guy from the CompUSA "sale" wrote to us. Readers keep posting their stories about other places in the comments.

CompUSA and Tigerdirect

Please let it be known that everything about tigerdirect.com/compusa.com 's "big" sale was a bust.

First it was not an online sale but a tele-marathon instead. Prices were valid only through phone lines which for half the night were actually dead. When the lines were working i was either on hold for a minimum of 20 min then hung up on or on the one occasion i got through was told that the product i requested was not on sale and then got hung up on. The crew for the live web cast lost video throughout the night.

Browsers were crashing, phones were crashing, all organization was lost. It was just a very unsatisfying experience for having spent 12+ hours tuned in to their product placement and free advertisement and still leaving empty handed. Now i realize everyone cries when they do not get their tickle me elmo but this seemed different.

I felt as though I was lied to. Quantities were not limited but scarce. They were based off donated products a fact that was no where to be seen in the advertisement. I don't know. It is late, i am tired, and i somehow feel robbed even though i had no chance to spend money. I wrote you so this message did not get lost in the comments. I am a long time tigerdirect promoter but i am reconsidering my loyalty. So please just let me known. That this was a FAIL!

well i know people that went to the compusa.com web site and watched their live stream /pink Friday sale ALL day, essentially they would show an item on sale and give you an 888-444-9x00 number to call to try to order it.

i guess it worked ok until the last few hours when all their computers and cameras went out—they switched to a asus netbook to broadcast the last few items, including the coveted sony vaio TT laptop that lists t $6000, being sold for $999.

yes I tried desperately to call in for that, as did nearly the 5000 people watching...the last few hours had not only the problems with the webcast, but also audio sync, and then problems with the sale 888
phone lines, making it impossible to get through.....we need the net to complain to make compusa do the sale again or just sell more of the sony vaio tt.

The Compusa/Tigerdirect Pink Friday sales where a joke and I question whether or not anyone received any of the high demand products other than staff members and there friends. There where a few products which I had planned on buying mainly: i7 920 processors,x58 mobo's,Nec projectors,Xbox360..... I had 3 phones auto-dialing the numbers.Since they were basically changing the phone# in sequence ie: 1-888-444-9300,1-888-444-9500,1-888-444-9800 repeat. I had the phones set to start dialing b4 they were put on the screen,as they put the number on the screen, and just after the number was put up. and would receive the "Item is already sold out","Please hold" message or would just plain get hung up on.
All in all it was ONE BIG SCAM!

A CompUSA guy wrote a reply to this story. He had this to say:

I also looked all over PinkFriday.org and I now have to agree with some of the customers who are complaining. I don’t believe that the deals and the ways in which they were delivered were explained. They did not say that the deals were only available through the phone and they did not explain that they only had a few units of each item. Perhaps they could have said, “Telethon style giveaways of extremely limited quantities.”

This is a small issue but it seems to have riled up a few people.

My final thought is this: Despite all the frustration and the technical difficulties, despite the fact that the explanation of the event was vague, despite the customer complaints, there were a lot of happy people and there was a ton of money donated to Susan G Komen.

Circuit City

I went to Circuit City to get a videocamera. They didn't have the $200 JVC one that I really wanted. They didn't have the $450 HD Samsung (marked down from $850) in stock. And, when I spotted a good $650 HD Sony videocamera, they wouldn't do a $50 price match to CompUSA.

That's right - Circuit City was unwilling to do an 8% price match for a customer in store ready to buy. In fact, I didn't even get a counteroffer. At least a "I can't do $610 but how about $630?" Is it any wonder they're going out of business.

Do you have more horror stories that you want to denounce? Maybe you have good stories, like getting that Sony Vaio TT for $999? Tell us about it here.

<![CDATA[Take a Trip Down Memory Lane With Other Failed Gadget Sellers]]> Now that Circuit City's closing up shop, perhaps we should take a minute to remember other failed gadget dealers from our country's storied history. Technologizer's compiled a bunch of old television ads from now defunct tech stores and they're a treasure trove of early 1990s cheesiness and the repetitive mantra, “Lowest prices! Best Selection! Amazing service!,” that none of them could actually provide. Remember Nobody Beats The Wiz? Crazy Eddie? The short-lived death of CompUSA? Who doesn't love nostalgia for the ghosts of retailers past? <![CDATA[HTC Touch Diamond Available on CompUSA For $779]]> If you really want to get your hands on an HTC Touch Diamond before the official US launch, CompUSA has one available for $779. The good news is that it's unlocked, so you can use it on both AT&T and T-Mobile, and quad-band, so you can take it just about anywhere where GSM goes. It's a nice phone, though kinda slow in our first impressions. Might want to wait until some more reviews hit before making your decision. [CompUSA]

<![CDATA[CompUSA: It Lives!]]> After it died, CompUSA was bought by Tigerdirect, and here are some of the first pictures of the freshly awakened PC retailer. Even better, the zombified store is reported by reader Martin B. to be better than its pre-undead version:

It's a much better store than it used to be, full of components, motherboards, and lots of actually _helpful_ people who know computers.

<![CDATA[CompUSA "Grand Re-Opens" in Florida, Hopefully With Less Suck]]> After purchasing out-of-business CompUSA a couple months ago, TigerDirect is reanimating the red, white and blue corpse with "Grand Re-Openings" of fifteen stores in Florida, along with one brand new one. They're promising "Lower prices... New wider selection... And amazing new deals." We hope so, their prices were ridiculous even when they were actively trying to dump everything. <![CDATA[11-Year-Old Network Administrator Sorts Out Alabama School]]> Jon Penn isn't your average 11-year-old school kid. No, Sir. In his spare time, mostly between classes, he manages the entire computing network for his school in Alabama. The network consists of sixty computers and Jon took up the role when the previous administrator upped and left, completely unannounced.

Jon has since visited CompUSA and purchased some tools to help him map out the school's network. Apparently, the whole infrastructure was in such a sorry state when Jon got started, he had to urge the head teacher to spend some cash on up-to-date antivirus software. Even still, some of the machines Jon has to deal with are so old they cannot support current protection packages. In short; the little tyke's got his work cut out. Sure, this all sounds fantastic for the kid, he's obviously quite a smart lad, but we ask you this; is he smart enough to make the old network administrator mysteriously vanish, giving him an excellent opportunity to show off the mad network admin skills he's gained following 11 years of solid training? That crafty little... [Network World via Slashdot]

<![CDATA[The Sad Final Days of a CompUSA]]> It's always sad when a store you used to frequent goes out of business, but how about when that store used to mark up its prices like mad? Things become slightly less sad. Nevertheless, this desolate scene at a Portland CompUSA definitely brings a slight tear to our eye. Reader Russ went in for some "last gasp" deals, but there's pretty much nothing left, aisles and displays having been long torn down. He tells us that if there's a store closing near you, you might be able to nab 40% off some Xbox or PSP games as well. Bonus shot after the jump.

<![CDATA[CompUSA Supplies FAQ About Store Closings]]> Now that CompUSA is closing its doors, it has begun the process of tying up loose ends regarding issues like gift cards, rain checks, rebates and returns. In a nutshell, if you purchased anything from the store after December 12th you are pretty much S.O.L.

As for warranties and service, CompUSA has stated that all products currently being serviced in the tech shop will be completed and returned. All outstanding warranties will be a third-party provider, Assurant Solutions. Wow, going out of business during the holidays makes things easy on everyone doesn't it? <![CDATA[CompUSA Throws in the Towel, Sells to a Liquidator]]> While the rumor has been floating around all week, the Wall Street Journal reports CompUSA has been sold to a liquidation firm, effectively putting the company out of business. The move is largely based on declining sales, with the company speculated to only do $1.5 billion in sales this year (compared to $4 billion last year). While it will be open through the holidays, the company is actively working to sell and/or close its 103 retail stores. Can you say clearance deals? [WSJ]

<![CDATA[Cheap LCDs to Blame for CompUSA Store Closing?]]> Manufacturers of cheap flat-panel TVs, like Vizio and Olevia, could be partially blamed over the recent closing of 128 CompUSA stores and 70 Circuit City stores. Obviously, the low prices of the off-brand LCD flat panels have put a lot of pressure on the "premium" flat-panel manufacturers like Sony and Panasonic to drop prices to compete. The price drops all around have squeezed the margins and hurt the brick-and-mortar retailers like CompUSA and Circuit City, in turn partially causing some of the recent closings. The general consensus at yesterday's U.S. Flat Panel Display Conference was that there are too many brands on the shelves and that the discounts need to stop. Maybe it's just a hunch, but I don't think that opinion will be too popular with the consumers.

<![CDATA[CompUSA Closing 128 Stores]]> Oops, looks like it's 128 stores, not 100 like we thought before. 229 minus 128 leaves only 101 stores—a nice round number that management no doubt was aiming for.

Also, a tipster tells us their training department (which made up of over 20% of their services) is closing as well.

<![CDATA[CompUSA Closing 100 Stores Nationwide, Unemployable Smartasses Everywhere Are Devastated]]> Ben over at the Consumerist has a tip that CompUSA, our favorite computer retailer if this were the mid 90s, is closing down 100 stores. That doesn't sound like a huge number, for a nationwide chain, but considering they only have 229 stores, it means they're in some big trouble.

We can sort of anecdotally confirm this, as two local CompUSAs have had going out of business sales in the past few months. We would have checked them out, but the stores were hard to find and in inaccessible locations, which sort of explains the difficulty they're having attracting customers.

<![CDATA[Weird Combo of the Day: iTunes Card Free With Zune]]> Hey, this looks like a great deal from CompUSA in Spokane: Buy a Microsoft Zune and you get a free $15 iTunes gift card. Wait a minute. iTunes? Zune? What's wrong with this picture? Note to CompUSA Corporate: iTunes songs won't play on a Zune.

However, you could download those songs from iTunes, burn them to a CD, then rip them. Finally, you could play them on the Zune. But that would be illegal.

CompUSA knows how to sell Zunes! (LOL) [MacRumors Forums] (Thanks, JC!)

<![CDATA[Leak: Budget GeForce 8800 Card Coming]]> Our trigger-happy friends at CompUSA have taken the veil off Nvidia's unannounced GeForce 8800 GTS card. What makes this new card stand out from the pack is that rather than carry a full 512MB of RAM on board, it settles for 320MB, which makes it cheaper. $349 kinda cheap to be exact. The card is slated to come out Feb 17th (next Saturday) according to CompUSA. Just make sure you got your drivers straightened out before you buy it.

<![CDATA[CompUSA Clueless about InterWebs]]> nslu2.jpgFurther evidence that bricks-and-mortar stores are out of touch: our esteemed brothers at The Consumerist got a note from reader Rick, showing a letter he wrote to CompUSA after the company refused to budge on a $100 price for a Linksys network storage drive he found on the Internets for $84. CompUSA's salesperson said the company will only match the price of competitors doing business nearby. Says Rick:
"I'm confused. Did I time warp back to 1998? Does CompUSA not realize that they compete DIRECTLY with on-line retailers? I put the product back on the shelf. I did not buy any of the other accessories I was prepared to purchase from you. NewEgg got all of my business."
This is not surprising to us—we saw HDMI cables at Best Buy selling for upwards of $80 which were available on Internet for $15. How can these companies survive? It's crazy. It's the "get it now" mentality.
