If you haven't seen the Windows 386 promo video, prepare to have your mind blown... one window at a time. Sorry.

I still have fond, fond memories of my little Sinclair ZX81. The programming manual that came with it (a $10.99 value!) is still BY FAR the best introductory BASIC programming manual I've ever seen/read.

The problem with it was that there was essentially no software for it, and while you could use any cassette player for storage, the odds of actually saving your work successfully were slim. So we caved in and got an Apple II+ a year or so later.

@A Pimp Named DaveR: We did the same thing. Had a Sinclair ZX-80 that drove my husband berserk. Not just the cassette business, but because he could never remember that the computer helpfully typed in the whole command when you pressed the first letter.

We went out and bought a Commodore Vic-20 about six months after we got the Sinclair.

Ah...I remember loading "Jumpman" from a Datassette onto a Commodore 64, you couldn't move for like 20 or 30 minutes or the vibration would cause a load error.

We also had some crazy book full of machine code games that could be typed in...pages and pages of 000101000 000001110 0000110001... We had the VIC-20 before the 64...can't remember much about it though.

Brings a tear to my eye.

@Huemonster: same thing!! i thought it was awesome when you finally finished all the code and typed run... nothing happens. you review the code line by line and find you misspelled goto somewhere (gato)

and then the whoa factor and mild sense of accomplishment!

The first PC I ever used was a Commodore PET. Applications were run from cassettes. I always thought it should have used 8 tracks instead...

I wish i had kept the marketing material that came with my first laptop PC, a Toshiba Satellite Pro 425CDS. It had a blazing Pentium 100Mhz processor, a whopping 8MB of RAM, and more storage than you could ever want in its 810MB hard drive. This was top of the line in 1996.

According to the US Department of Labor's Inflation Calculator, this machine would cost $1,576.99 today.

Congratulations, Imagination Machine. You make Apple, Inc. look reasonable in comparison.

What year is the ad from? It's not a bad buy for $599 with all those specs, if it's from the '80s or early '90s.
