    @johnnyabnormal: I *think* the answer is technically no, but more of a yes and no answer: Logic 9 supposedly offers better multi-core support, but is not yet optimized for Snow Leopard.

    Since Logic does support multi-cores, and Logic SL support will only improve, if you're contemplating getting an iMac for Logic, I would definitely get an i5/i7.

    Looking to replace that G5 Quad? ;) #imaci5speed

    Wow, I am really looking forward to building my own PC. But that 27" iMac with the i7 chip is making it difficult. At $2200, it's very difficult to build what I want with a with a 27" back-lit LED LCD monitor for much cheaper than the iMac.

    ...It's the monitor that kills my PC build's price. There isn't much available for that size/quality for a reasonable amount of $$$.

    Also, yeah, the PC is still cheaper, but not by much. And when you consider that I plan on Hackintosh'ing it up, the pain factor goes up by a rather large amount. Not having to worry about any updates would be a nice plus. Kinda makes the now much smaller price difference pretty negligible.

    ...this iMac has kinda killed the Apple-tax (except for Mac Pro's).

    @newgalactic: Yeah a 27" LED Back-lit IPS panel would run you about 1500 on the cheap side; if it was available yet.

    As a previous hardcore gamer/build my own pc type i have been perfectly satisfied with my last gen high end iMac with the 3.06, 4gb ram and 8800gts. I play aion on high, cant play crysis on high but meh. My old rig (and now media server) was a q6600, 4gb ram and twin 8800 gtx's.

    The one thing i just couldnt beat in price--and why i didnt buy a mac pro at the time-- was the 24" ips panel built in, which just rocks for working on and is pretty fucking awesome for gaming.

    Sorry for my lame rant. #imaci5speed

    @newgalactic: I'm almost in the seat beside in that boat. I'll admit these new macs are actually kinda fairly priced by Apple's standards. And I'm also wanting to build my own PC in the next few months from scratch. (Well I bought a new 24" monitor recently to hook up to my laptop for starters...) The only aesthetic part I don't like about the new imacs is the sharp corners on the black screen's edge, I think the rounded ones would've looked much better.

    Still I think input/output ports are kinda limited overall on macs, and building me a PC seems it would be a much more convenient road. Coupled with the fact that I'm a PC guy and want to get my hands in building a PC means I'll going with option a) Building a computer. (New macs do honestly look tempting with the specs n' all, but Windows is better for me, and I don't respect Apple)

    @newgalactic: You also have to take into consideration that the screens are IPS.

    It really depend on what you want. You want the nice design? iMac. You want to not be stuck with your specs and update when you feel like it? Hackintosh #imaci5speed

    You could argue that laptops are already "disposable" - they just last for a few years while disposable cameras last for X number of shots. #disposablelaptop

    I think Laptops are way too much of a personal item to have throwaways... It's hard to make a camera "yours", so it's easy to have a detachment to the product, unless of course you have a bedazzler and rein stone the shit out of it.

    Throwing away a laptop or desktop, to me, is like euthanizing your dog... #disposablelaptop

    Well, disposable cameras made sense because a camera takes a set number of pictures before you have to change the film reel(this is before digital cameras, obviously), so they did away with the need to do so by making them single use. You could then get the pictures out of it and be done with it.

    What's the set number of things you do with a laptop before needing to mess with it somehow? What permanence is there to anything you did on said laptop once it's disposed of? Are they expecting some kind of laptop developing stores that will rip out the harddrive and throw the data on a flash drive or something?

    I just don't see the equivalent uses that would complete the analogy between this and a disposable camera, and thus make this worthwhile. #disposablelaptop

    I don't really understand..
    With cameras you use the film and then bring the camera in for processing.. What about these laptops would stop anyone from just using them forever? Unless there's a joke in here that I don't get.

    Good review!

    I also had mixed feelings about the 27" screen. It's big, impressive, and blows you away at first sight, but at the same time it's rather fatiguing on the eyes because of the high dpi. Only time will tell if this iMac can be comfortably usable for long durations.

    Also copious amounts of heat is correct. This iMac is sizzling hot to the touch near the CPU and GPU units. Could function very well as a heater in the cold winter months.

    @Brian Lam: My laptop's screen has a pretty high DPI (1600*900 at 13.1 inches) and I have gotten used to it over time. I definitely think the extra pixels are worth getting used to the screen. #appleimac27inch

    @Steve: the issue is that you sit closer to small laptopscreens than big 27 inchers. its like a tv with a resolution of a laptop. cellphone have even more res. #appleimac27inch

    I'm interested in the 21.5-inch model, but does anyone know about its screen? I'm afraid it uses a TN panel like the old 20-inch model -- that was horrible, not only the brightness was uneven, but the COLOURS! If you had a picture on the bottom half of the screen and you dragged to the top half, its colours would change. It was that bad! #imac #appleimac27inch
