You could argue that laptops are already "disposable" - they just last for a few years while disposable cameras last for X number of shots. #disposablelaptop

    Good review!

I also had mixed feelings about the 27" screen. It's big, impressive, and blows you away at first sight, but at the same time it's rather fatiguing on the eyes because of the high dpi. Only time will tell if this iMac can be comfortably usable for long durations.

Also copious amounts of heat is correct. This iMac is sizzling hot to the touch near the CPU and GPU units. Could function very well as a heater in the cold winter months.

@Brian Lam: My laptop's screen has a pretty high DPI (1600*900 at 13.1 inches) and I have gotten used to it over time. I definitely think the extra pixels are worth getting used to the screen. #appleimac27inch

I'm interested in the 21.5-inch model, but does anyone know about its screen? I'm afraid it uses a TN panel like the old 20-inch model -- that was horrible, not only the brightness was uneven, but the COLOURS! If you had a picture on the bottom half of the screen and you dragged to the top half, its colours would change. It was that bad! #imac #appleimac27inch

I'm using the 27" iMac now, I just bought it. It's the $1700 one.

Yes, the screen rez is daunting. The app buttons and the text below them are really small, so are the side bar items on folders. All other on screen text can be increased in size to make it more readable.

The magic mouse is actually pretty cool. It is really flat, but intuitive. Took no getting used to at all. I increased the scroll and sweep to max speed and now it works nearly like I want it to. I used to use a Kensington two button mouse with scroll wheel on my old Mac and I'm not missing the wheel. The pointer almost makes it from corner to corner with a fast sweep, but I would like it to be just a little faster. I'll try to find a 3rd party app to speed it up a little more.

The 27 inch screen is huge. I mean HUGE. For the first few hours of use I felt like I was sitting in the front row of a movie theater. I'm rapidly getting used to it and like it. All in all, not much to complain about.

Also, I made the Apple store give me the extended USB keyboard with the number pad. The blue tooth keypad is tiny.

P.S. If you're running Leopard and hate the transparent top menu bar, download Onyx, it will let you change it to solid white. So much better.

That 27' with the i7 is my new drug. However, there is one important detail to take note of with regards to the i7 version.

Most i7 mobo's have triple channel memory (and some other goodies). However, the iMac most likely uses a combo i5/i7 mobo. This will prevent the i7 version from taking advantage of triple channel memory, or any of the other i7 exclusive goodies.

While this is more of a "powerhouse" issue, and not really the domain of a stand-alone computer like the iMac, it is somewhat important to anyone really excited about the i7 version of the iMac. #appleimac27inch

I recently bought an iMac 24 (3.08, 4gb ram, 1tb, ATI 4850). And by recently I mean I received it less than a week ago. So needless to say that when I logged into apple.com and saw that my shiny new desktop was already yesterdays news I was a tad bit aggravated. So I just had to call up apple and see whats up.

I told the lady on the phone and she barely batted an eye before she said "no problem sir" Then paid for the shipping back, full refund, and I am currently waiting on my new iMac 27 (Quad 2.8, 8gb ram, 1tb, ATI 4850). Hopefully It ships out in early November and not later.

So I figured I would share with you all the great customer service apple has. I must say though. The only thing I didn't like about this new model was that I couldn't get a better graphics card than from my previous model. Other than that I can't wait!!!

Problem with these iMacs and Mac mini's is that they suck to work on, so many screws and plastic shit to take apart.

I bought a Mac mini a few years ago, after a year it popped and smoked and died. Out of warranty so threw it in the trash.

This is why DELL monopolizes the market consumer and business. Their shit is easy to work on when breaks.

You have to spend 2 hours replacing a HD in an iMac where as in a DELL it takes 5min.. #appleimac27inch

@bonedog73: Well, it takes me all of 10 minutes to replace the HDD in a Mini since I *know how*.

What honestly confuses me is the Mac Mini colo people (I know a number of these people), who have been hacking extra drives and into minis and sticking them into data centers for years. I would think that having redundant hardware and easier servicing would outweigh the size/power advantages of the mini, but I'm apparently wrong on that one. #appleimac27inch

Surprisingly not intensly gimped in the hardware department. The layout is pretty hot and would get a lot of looks if that is what you are after(quite likely if you are buying something like this). Why would you need to open your laptop if the batteries are dead? #dell

I actually really like the angled keyboard. I think it would be great while it's sitting on a desk and as the previous article pointed out it would also keep your lap cool... But the whole "swipe this thing to open" genie in a bottle deal has me confused.

Do we really want an option that adds $200-$300 (complete guess) on a Windows laptop? Isn't that why many of us buy Windows PCs? More for the money and all that jazz?

@UnderLoK: Eh, a heat sensor and solonoid latch probably adds $10 at the very most to the build cost of the machine. By the time you can add it to Dell's cart, it probably bumps the price up by $30 or so. #dell
