But New Yorkers' loss is your gain: now you have an opportunity to buy the famed Astroland's rides to recreate the dirty, dirty magic in your own backyard.

Yes, you can own the awesome Break Dance ride for a mere $299,000. Too much for you? Well, how about the Bumper Cars? That's only $125,000. There are loads of rides available, with everything from a Tilt-a-Whirl to a Water Flume to a Pirate Ship, all for rock-bottom prices. The only ride not up for sale is the famous Cyclone roller coaster, which is staying open and giving people permanent back problems for the foreseeable future. At least we'll still have that.

Someone buy a bunch of these and open up an alternate Astroland somewhere. Please? [Rides 4 U via Brooklyn Vegan]

<![CDATA[Robots Act Out Guantanamo Waterboarding Torture, Terrorists Win]]> There's a new exhibit at Coney Island that's fun for the whole family: the "Waterboard Thrill Ride." Greeted by Spongebob exuding “It don’t Gitmo better!" you walk in to peer through bars at dude in dark sweats leaning over another guy in an orange suit, his face wrapped in a towel. Slip a dollar into the machine, and for 15 seconds, "Dark Hood" pours water into Orange Jumpsuit's nose and mouth while he convulses.

I think there might be some sort of political and cultural commentary going on—something about the US and torture and calling it a thrill ride and people paying to see it at a carnival. Anyways! The artist who created the animatronic exhibit, Steve Powers, actually wanted to do a waterboarding exhibit with real people—he'd be waterboarded first, then perform it on a volunteer, who would do it to the next guy and so on. But pseudo-drowning robots is obviously safer, and maybe a touch less controversial—after all, do androids dream of electric freedom? [NYT via BoingBoing]

<![CDATA[NYC Giz Meetup Was Successful, if a Bit Soggy]]> This past Saturday, a brave group of Giz readers braved 90 degree heat followed by raging thunderstorms to hang out in Coney Island, drink some beers and watch some totally inept minor league baseball. It was awesome.

Sure, we all got caught in what felt like the storm of the century right when we entered the ballbark. No big deal. Everyone ended up sprinting next door to Peggy O'Niells for some pitchers of beer and some of the most difficult to eat cheese dogs we've ever seen. Eventually, the rain let up, the game started, and we enjoyed our seats near first base while discovering just why the members of the Coney Island Cyclones are on a minor league team: they suck.

It was great to put faces to commenter names, even if it was kind of weird calling people by real names when you just want to call them, say, 92buicklesabre. Everybody was really cool, and despite whatever expectations I might have had, there was not a single socially awkward geek to be found. Sure, there were plenty of geeks, but all of them were more than personable. Thanks to Nokia's Ovi share system and the N95 they lent us, you can see the pictures we took during the meetup and uploaded to the site above.

At the end of the night, we handed out a bunch of fun swag from Nerf, Razer and Steelseries, making plans to hang out again and see the Dark Knight. We'll definitely have another NYC meetup of some sort in the future, but probably at a bar in Manhattan so more people can make it.

Oh, and OMG! Ponies and Kaiser-Machead, who both promised to show up and then didn't? You're both banned.

<![CDATA[Live Photos From the Giz NYC Meetup]]> Couldn't make it out to the Coney Island meetup today? It's OK, it's really, really hot outside. Now you can enjoy photos taken from our trusty Nokia N95, continually updated as we take them tonight. So go ahead, enjoy our baseball and shenanigans from afar, you lazy bum. Thanks to the fine folks at Nokia for setting us up with the N95 and Ovi share account!

<![CDATA[The Giz NYC Meetup is Tomorrow!]]> In case you haven't heard, we're going to the Cyclones game on Coney Island tomorrow then going out for drinks. Come hang out! Come meet us at 5:30pm at the Statue on the west side of Keyspan Park. If you have GA tickets, everyone can go in together. If you don't, we'll figure out a place to meet afterwards. If you get there late, just meet everyone at the same place after the game and we can head to the bar together. Huzzah!

Check our Twitter during the day for updates as to whereabouts. Benny will be hitting the rides at Astroland around 3pm or so.

<![CDATA[Giz Coney Island Meetup: The Details]]> OK guys, here's the deal with the meetup: if you want to come watch a sweet minor league ballgame with some Giz editors and your fellow readers, now's your chance. We're going to the Brooklyn Cyclones game on June 28th, which is a Saturday. We'll be getting field box tickets for ourselves, which are $15, so we recommend those, but tickets go down to $8 for bleacher seats if you're so inclined.

Just click here or call 718-507-8499 to grab your tickets. If you want to get there earlier, Astroland, the Coney Island amusement park with the famous Cyclone roller coaster is within walking distance.

We'll probably go out for beers after the game at Peggy O'Neills, so look for us in the stands during the game or parking lot afterwards or just meet us there. We'll set up a twitter with details as to where we are during the game closer to the event itself.

<![CDATA[Get On Board with Giz's NYC Summer Meetup!]]> Hey guys! We're working on the plans for this summer's NYC Giz meetup at Coney Island, and it's looking awesome. But we need to know how many people to expect, so you need to sign up to be guaranteed your share of whatever we have organized to give you.

Interested in coming to Coney Island, playing with some gadgets, riding some roller coasters, participating in (or at least watching) a hot dog eating contest, drinking beers and going to a baseball game? Who wouldn't be? It'll take place on Saturday, June 28th. It'll be an all-ages affair, so don't worry if you're under 21 or want to bring the kids, but don't expect us to buy any of you rascally teenagers beer.

If you want to get on the update list and make sure you get whatever we have planned coming to you, email gizmeetup@gmail.com with your name and how many people you'll be rolling with. And are you a company interested in getting involved with the meetup? Email me at adam@gizmodo.com. Let's talk.
