    What is that thing Ballmer keeps talking about? Apple Tax thingy??? Seems to me the Apple Tax isn't so bad compared to the 9+ billions of Microsoft Tax. :-)

    The obvious solution would be for all of us to disconnect our computers permanently. Look at how much suffering this cyber culture has caused. Wouldn't it be great to go back to a simpler time?

    I don't understand how people are still infected with this thing. It's been all over the news, all over teh intarwebs, just about everybody that has a job working with computers has seen some warning on their intranet about it, every IT dweeb everywhere knows about it, hell I even check for the patch when I do IT audits.


    I guess the stupid is far more prolific than I'd once thought.

    @s017jrs: I never ran the patch much less updated cause I really don't feel like it, or the need to do it.


    If my windows computer is corrupted beyond use, I will just do a clean install and carry on about my life. Good thing about this is my primary computing needs are done mostly on a Mac though.

    @s017jrs: As I understand it, the virus/worm blocks access to update servers, so unless you actively update your software/run update checks, it disables automatic updates, and most are none the wiser.

    So, it tries to connect to a bunch of random domain names and then downloads whatever and does whatever (maybe).


    Wouldn't it be possible to write code telling it to delete itself, upload it to one of the many many many domain names it supposedly checks in on, and then blammo!? Problem solved, zombies slain, we live to get infected another day?


    There is an ethical debate about messing with someone else's computer, but similar things have been done before.

    @Sticks Calhoun: I'm interested in these "similar things." It is an interesting idea, but it seems to be a very novel approach to solving the problem, has it happened before? Is there precedent?


    I seem to recall some vigilante efforts for bugbear that did more harm than good, but somthing sanctioned by a government? Sounds dangerous.

    Trend Micro, in a blog post that sounds more like it was written by a President in an apocalypse movie than a software security expert


    Remember when they saved the world from the aliens with a goddamned computer virus? How boring can you get? There's nothing worse then when a movie's dramatic prose is the oh so suspenseful progress bar. At this point, not even Randy Quaid on a kamikaze mission could pull me back in.

    Anyone in Canada know anyone who's infected with Conficker? I work on a lot of peoples' computers and it's the first thing I check for (see Conficker Eye Chart [www.confickerworkinggroup.org]), and so far I haven't seen one infected machine.

    @SJRNWT: My entire university's computer network is infected. Went to class one morning and every single screen in the entire lab had a warning stating it was infected with Conficker.

    @Maksimir: Texas A&M. I've only seen it in engineering computer labs, so I don't know if it has spread to the student computing center. I had to scan my flash drive because Conficker tried to hitch a ride back to my own computer.

    @VideoOrItDidn'tHappen_GitEmSteveDave: 12 gauge 00 shots should be good. It's to cause as massive trauma as possible to stop the target. Besides, these zombies aren't armoured. a .357 JHP Magnum should also do the job, as will several shots with .45ACP.
