I'm pretty sure you guys are totally off. Crackberry gets a unit because they focus on Blackberries. You guys give a LOT of publicity to the iPhone with your weekly app roundup, and everything surrounding Apple rumours. It may be a marketing thing or whatever, but fear of a negative review because you compare it to the iPhone is a good reason not to send you guys a unit. I love Gizmodo, and the way you do news and stuff, but I'm not RIM, but if I were I might've done the same if I thought it was best for the Storm 2. RIM doesn't think we're motherf*ckers, they probably did think about sending review units to gadget blogs but are now trying a different approach? I use the Storm, and my iPhone, Pre friends have some stuff that they envy (awesome OSK that you can landscape everywhere, I personally like the click-screen). #meta
Its understandable to be mad that you guys got blacklisted, but you reviewed the phone without even using it "Because the Storm 2 is garbage". I have the Storm and it is pretty bad, the screen sucks and there are tons of bugs, no flash, no wifi, limited web capabilities, etc. From what I have read so far they seem to have taken care of all of those issues and if that were the case I would love the Storm. You can say what you want about RIM and you can boycott their products for business practices, but don't lower yourself to the level of "I'm mad therefore your phone sucks". This is why I don't read the comments here; this site is full of melodramatic fanboys of all brands...ok maybe just apple.
Why WOULD you get anything from RIM? You've publicized leaked product and they know you'll savage anything of theirs you get a chance to.
RIM definitely has a big problem looming on the horizon: they know that their dominance in corporate communication devices has a limited future as more and more suits decide they'd like something other than just email and phone in their pocket. That being said, 20-somethings aren't their target demo. They are giz's, though, so they aren't really alienating anyone other than the staff. I hesitate to call you guys "editorial" because I'm not sure that's what you are... or what you would want to be called.
In order for RIM to play ball with you guys, there would have to be some upside in it for them: I think you'd have to agree that there isn't. You've always hated their product and always will. Why should they let you build content and pageviews out of that by sending review models? You've got no obligation to RIM to be nice, or even objective, about their product. And they've got no obligation to send you stuff.
And let's be honest: this isn't about your readers - this is about you. Your tirade is disingenuous and hurts the the credibility you've built with at least one faithful reader. #meta
For RIM to blacklist Gizmodo for fear of a rotten review or angst from a previous review is almost WORSE than delivering another mediocre and dated product.
If I want feedback from a relevant group of writers and readers, I come here. I consider the opinions and reviews very legit and probably value them above all tech/gadget sites.
When a company purposely avoids this site and it's pending review..(especially one with the recently minimal nearly nonexistent innovation like RIM) well......
it's enough for me to deem the company, it's product(s), and all future dealings.......irrelevant.
Blind loyalty perhaps,
but Giz has influenced quite a few of my major purchases and service providers and im'a keep rolling with em' until they steer me wrong.
@Jimmy Mcnaulty: I love how the only comments getting "approved" are those in support of Gizmodo here.
Hey Giz, did you know that it's CARRIERS that approve who gets pre-release devices? After Verizon's mess with the first Storm, I don't blame them for holding back until they feel it's perfect.
Gizmodo's rant here just made them come off like a little spoiled brat who didn't get candy at the supermarket. Entirely unprofessional, and I really don't think I can take any of their reviews of RIM products - and anything non-Apple, honestly - at face value anymore. #meta
This may be the most immature thing I have ever read. And I love some of these comments. Like Blackberrys are only for 45 year old businessmen? I am in my early 30's and have a Blackberry Storm and an iPhone since I am in charge of all mobility functions for a large global company.
I will say that I love the iphone. It's great as an ipod or a pseudo-gameboy. But when I need to actually connect with work, I always use my Blackberry. It's just better for business, and I don't think that anyone who was being honest would argue that. Especially when you start looking at the supporting infrastructure that both devices use.
Until Active Sync has anywhere near the features or security that BES has, Blackberrys will be always be #1 in corporate America. At least for the companies that value their security. #meta
Wow Giz, just...wow. When I was in high school, I was "written up" (some schools called them Demerits, basically you get in trouble and get some form of detention). I thought it was for a bogus reason, so I literally spat on the principal's shoes, resulting in even more detention.
Never, EVER burn your bridges Giz. You've still got me as a reader, but damn it, don't act like a four year old who doesn't get the cereal they saw in the commercial they really wanted.
This is one of the most immature posts I've EVER seen here. I would normally expect better from this site, but you've just set a lower level of expectations from me.
@ovil200: Sorry guys, but I agree with Ovil here. Sure, it's not nice of RIM to blacklist you (if that was what officially happened), but you could, and should have taken the higher ground and just be professional about it.
You wanna know why the NYT and the WSJ have review units but you don't? Because you wouldn't see a post like that on either sites/newspapers. If you act like a kid, then don't be surprised if you are treated like a kid.
You are the guys who thought it would be funny to tease and mess with people working on major trade shows just for a few giggles, the very type of companies you want to be treated like a professional from. Instead of putting your act together, you are now trying to push the blame onto the companies that decided you're not serious enough, put their customers against them?
@DivinoAG: Odd that the NYT and WSJ are struggling to just stay alive and relevant.
Do a google search for just about any gadget that came out in the last year, 90% gizmodo is in the top 3 hits. WSJ? NYT? Normally not even on the first page. #meta
HAHA! Give me a break Engadget. It doesn't take a very intelligent mind to notice that your website is completely Pro-Iphone. You promote Iphone apps like the government promotes reformed health care! Anybody that even occasionally visits this site knows that. It's not that Blackberry doesn't give a shit about us, it's that they don't give a shit about a website that pretends to be objective in its reviews then whores itself out to Iphone or anyone else that will give them free phones a few weeks early (or free phones in general, I bet all you "reviewers received free Iphones from Apple).
Oh, and seriously, I've never seen a tech website have this big of a temper tantrum against a phone company. Have some class and leave the "shitty" language to us readers. As of now the Engadget bookmark is deleted.
@whatever82: My My, it seems you made the same comment on the engadget site too! Just replacing the name of the blog eh? Dont you think this is a certain form of douchebaggery? #meta
I'm a recently-finished-school-kid, about to enter a world full of gadgets and other crap. I'm hoping to get a good mark in my final examinations coming up so I can get into an industry that makes things myself. I've depended on Gizmodo almost solely for my tech knowledge, with the occasional Engadget when you guys happen to link me there.
Seriously though, my first home-built computer was from parts Gizmodo reviewed. My netbook which I'm currently using was reviewed on Gizmodo (and Engadget, and a couple other blogs because my mum wanted to be sure it was worth buying, she's paranoid). I got my HTC G1 based on how much I learnt from Gizmodo (and asking my S.O.). I'm able to rave to my friends about new tech I read on Gizmodo during lunch breaks when we're talking about things from class to politics to throwing cards at Cameron because apparently he cheated.
I'm not trying to suck up or anything, but over the years at times I have actually relied on Gizmodo's posts to find ways to write my own speeches and pieces of work for school. I've learnt to employ a certain level of humour and sometimes, wit and sarcasm from Mr Diaz's posts, and to be very direct to my point thanks to Brian Lam's posts, and the compulsory level of seriousness or wordplay often found in the other editors.
Add that knowledge to an unhealthy obsession with Monty Python and a collection of special friends like the oft-childish-yet-brilliant Ben Segal and the fantastic literaturical skills of my dear Wendy, and one would develop exactly my attitude to things and styles of writing.
So I say that RIM has indeed screwed themselves over by pretty much letting down the readers of Gizmodo. It may have turned out to suck, but it may shed light on other Blackberry products that may show up sometime, and soforth. They've certainly lost a lot of opinion by making this decision, and opinion could possibly be the only way they'll ever realise how to get themselves out of the grave they're digging.
My point here is, that I'm pretty sure there are many, many readers of Gizmodo who often come to conclusions, or make decisions based on, reviews and articles they read here. And RIM not taking advantage of that is just...crap.
And I now I'm quite certain they'll never be able to woo me.
The quality of writing and content on this site just keeps getting worse. I guess you get what you pay for when you hire a bunch of smug and pissy Williamsburg hipster D-bags to be "tech-bloggers". Maybe you should wash down your sour grapes with some Pabst. Hurr. #meta
At the same time, I think most readers have iPhones or Pres. I mean, I would never consider a BlackBerry because I'm cool and young and hip. Maybe they want to make the suits feel special by only pandering to them.
Or, it could be that they don't want to sell any BlackBerrys and therefore are ignoring one of the most popular tech blogs in the industry. If that's the case, then good job, RIM. You pissed off the wrong people. #meta
This is like a break-up where us readers are the mutual friends of Giz and Rim. And Giz is the kinda slutty in a nice way ex-girlfriend who got dumped by Rim and they are not returning her calls.
So whats a mutual friend to do? Who do I side with?
I was never that close to Rim, that guy would just show up at my parties and drink my beer and copy my other phones, where Giz has never given me much more than short-form and afternoon "quickie" entires.
Ultimately, there is a greater chance that Giz will have sex with me. And Rim might just give me a Semi-Touchscreen Device (STD for short).
I know, I know, bros before hos, but I already have enough bros. #meta
it really is sad honestly, that struck a cord when you said they can't make a phone or market outside people in suits. it is very true, and it wont hold them for long.
I wonder the ratio for how many people read gizmodo vs, how many people read the NYT for that article, i would hope gizmodo would be higher.
Whats black and white and all over?

Just out of curiosity, how are we ever supposed to take any future review of any RIM product published here at face value? Because I question whether or not your opinion could be seen as anything other than biased after this screed. #meta
@lostarchitect: Yep. But the idea that you can control message is pretty old fashioned. These days, it doesn't matter who you choose to give previews, information or samples to, blogs and social networks will issue a verdict and the time lag between your message and theirs will be short. #meta
