@godwhacker: My suspension of belief relies solely on good execution of the plot. If there's no real rhyme or reason to the core of the movie's idea, then the gratuitous violence will only be annoying. There's nothing more boring than lots of blood spraying everywhere, guts flying and lots of weaponry discharging all over the place. There's only so much projectile tile bits and squib splatter that I can take before I've come to loathe the filmmaker for thinking that having stuff pop and explode constantly, while cheesy actors pretend to die all over the place, is great product.
As for gratuitous sex....maybe I'm a weirdo, but if it ain't porn, I don't care much for sex scenes in movies unless it's really meaningful to the rest of the story, unless it's Bound, then it's fucking awesome (though that wasn't what I'd consider gratuitous :D )
For some perspective on overwrought violence, compare the Master Shifu v. Tai Lung fight in Kung Fu Panda to the Super Burly Brawl sequence between Neo and Smith in the Matrix Revolutions. It saddens me to the core that Kung Fu Panda's final fight scene was way superior.
@Curves: That really depends. There's going nekkid to a fist fight to avoid the opponent being able to grab clothing, and then there's mischievous nekkid, which just involves streaking through your institution of choice.
@Joker10: It depends upon what you mean by "foreign". If you find that intelligent, thoughtful and/or provocactive films that don't cater to a bland mainstream aesthetic are difficult to understand then, yes, their films might as well be described as foreign to you.
Sorry, I'm in a persnickety mood. Apologies.
No, the Criterion Collection DVDs/BDs (and presumably the films it will stream) are not just foreign films, although international filmmakers certainly are well-represented. As Adam says, worth checking out.

1. senseless violence
2. gratuitous sex
3. no discernible plot
i watch movies to be entertained, i don't want to think, i am all about the suspension of reality during the 2 hours i am there

And gratuitous sex has nothing to do with your reality? So sorry to hear that, godwhacker...
