In reply to This Is Why They Make Travel Adapters
I just moved to the UK (from da bay) a few days ago, had the same problem. A travel adapter is four pounds ($8). Their plugs here are so awful that they have to put switches on them so it doesn't burn the house down. Even the travel adaptors are awful. 220 volts is what is used to power a jaccuzzi or an all electric dryer. The irony is all of their appliances are miniaturized versions, like a dorm room fridge passing for a real one. So shit that could basically run off of a USB port is instead being driven by 220 volts. imagine if every cord were as thick as those orange outdoor extension cords....

@MarvelaAndrogeus: The plugs I'll admit are over engineered, individual switches, fuses in each plug, and the gate on the top pin.
But the only thing to complain about a UK plug, is when you stand on one in the dark. :D
And our fridges are normal sized. If' you've got a mini fridge that's you getting a mini-fridge. :P

@MarvelaAndrogeus: I know this sounds like a bit of Amero-centrism, but aren't ours the most compact in the world? Even grounded US plugs seem dwarfed by those from other countries.

I'd totally do that, if it was the only way I would be able to download por... I mean... read Gizmodo while traveling. It's kind of brilliant as long as your voltage is right.

My name is Scotland and I am a Gizmodoholic.
Personally, I am not a fan of the negative connotations that the suffix "holic" brings to my addiction. Therefor, I prefer to refer to myself as a Gizmodophile.

Are there any current laws that they can charge this person for? Watt worries me is this person isn't safe in their own Ohm. That just hertz.

Meh, they have a switch on the plug. It's safe to set up until you flip it.

They have those all over NZ which drove me nuts. At first. But then they made sense once I started shoving keys in it.

Around my house if the plug doesn't fit we just splice the wires and pull the outlet from the wall and throw it all into a bucket of water!

For anyone interested, I do train babies to stay out of water buckets....only 3 easy payments of $24.95!!! +S&P
