<![CDATA[How Much of Your Life Does Google Own? Dashboard Tells You]]> It's an interesting question to consider, especially if you use consider just how many Google services you might use: Gmail, Reader, Maps, GTalk, YouTube, Latitude, Calendar, Contacts and oh yeah, Search. Dashboard shows you everything Google knows about you.

It shows your most recent searches, last conversations in Google Talk, most recent location—basically, it summarizes all of the info you have poured into every Google service you use, so you can see it at glance. It's kind of starting, actually. From the Dashboard, you can drill down into every app to look at the info more closely or adjust privacy settings, which you certainly might feel inclined to do. Or it might make you want to unplug from the internet entirely. [Google via Lifehacker]

<![CDATA[Tesla Model S Electric Sedan's Huge Haptic Touchscreen Dashboard In Action]]> When we first saw Tesla's Model S electric sedan, we noticed a big, flashy touchscreen taking the place of the dashboard's console. TechCrunch took a test drive and learned a little more about it.

The Model S's touchscreen wasn't fully functional during the demo (the car's first with press), so internet browsing and presumably GPS weren't working. But we do know the touchscreen will control entertainment as well as navigation, and that it'll offer haptic feedback, probably rumbling a little bit when touched. The car should be priced around $50,000. [TechCrunch]

<![CDATA[2010 Toyota Prius Features Clever 'Touch Tracer' Display]]> The 2010 Toyota Prius gets 50mpg while bringing dead trees back to life. But maybe more our speed, the car also features a really nifty "Tracer Display" unlike anything we've seen in dashboards before.

It's a simple idea: You control car functions (like the stereo) with buttons on the wheel while the Tracer Display superimposes these buttons over your dashboard display. In other words, you can keep an eye on your speedometer instead of your wheel while searching for the one radio station not playing commercials.

And even though this display is a bit blurry in this shot, you can tell that the graphic overlay is really quite bright and sharp. Neat stuff...as if Prius owners needed another reason to be so smug. [KickingTires, Jalopnik]

<![CDATA[Dashboard Widgets For Jailbroken iPhones: Hot or Not?]]> This work-in-progress Dashboard implementation (seen here running through the SDK) looks like it's coming along nicely; I just can't decide if it's something I'd want. What do you guys think?

It's done by the same guy who brought Leopard's "stacks" feature to your bottom row of icons. It looks like it's running smoothly with a few test widgets, but I'm not sure if I see the appeal when the phone's UI is already fairly widgetized. No single application is ever more than a few swipes and a tap away, so I'm not convinced this is better than simply popping open the notes or the weather app (or in the case of the clock, looking two inches above to the clock that's already running).

Get compatibility for OS X widgets on the iPhone? Now I'm listening. I'm not sure if that's even possible, but I could see that being something I would jailbreak for. [ModMyi Forums]

<![CDATA[Downloadable Dashboard Apps for Cars Coming in 2010]]> Why leave your car out in the cold while your smartphone gets all the app fun? Hughes Telematics is aiming to bring downloadable apps to car dashboards, and the possibilities are pretty crazy.

Hughes plans to start rolling out the new dashboard consoles in about 2010, and gives examples like an emissions monitor, web-connected security camera, and even Twitter integration as what might soon be appearing in your car. Think about it: on a cross-country trip, your car takes panoramic photos of your surroundings every half hour, or of that little punk that keyed your front door in the Wendy's parking lot. You could lock and unlock your car with your iPhone, or control the stereo with it. What about updating your Facebook status with exactly where you are? That way your friends can have even more specific data about your personal life to not care about. This is the future, people. [NYTimes, photo by NYTimes]

<![CDATA[New Prius Hybrid Dashboard Photos]]> The dashboard looks primitive, especially next to the Ford hybrid dash that grows leaves when you hypermill. But it's rated at 50mpg under mixed driving, and is supposed to be faster than the old.

As previously mentioned, the car also has a solar panel used in the roof used to ventilate the car while parked, reducing AC usage once in motion, and LED taillights and daytime running lights.

The fore mentioned Ford dash, here:

<![CDATA[Verizon Launches Dashboard Flash-Based Mobile Storefront]]> Verizon has quietly gone live with their new Dashboard flash-based mobile storefront. So far, the app is only available on the LG Chocolate 3, but more phones are expected to be added by the end of the year. That would make it one of the largest implementations of Adobe's flash in the US. The service will allow users access to widgets that function as most widgets do—offering up easy access to news, weather and entertainment. If only the iPhone would get on the Flash bandwagon. <![CDATA[Chevy Volt Dashboard Looks Like The Future If The Future is White Plastic]]> We don't write about car dashboards all that often here on the Giz, but when the dash is from an electric car/hybrid and it shares its white sheen with both classic iPods and Stormtrooper helmets, how could we possibly resist? Nearly buttonless, the Chevy Volt's injection molded center console features a large LCD that, from what we can tell from the picture, will be locked with the static image of 2/3 battery remaining. It's certainly an interesting look, but I'm just not so sure it blends so well with the rest of the car. What do you think? [thecarlounge via Jalopnik]

<![CDATA[Is this the Futuremark 3D OpenGL-Powered Car Dashboard of the Future?]]> We've seen all-digital concept dashboards before, but none seem as impressive 3D (or close to reality) as Futuremark's. It scraps everything behind and to the right of the wheel in favor of a smooth, uninterrupted display onto which an OpenGL powered 3D engine renders everything you might need—instrumentation, navigation, entertainment system controls, climate controls, everything.

Dashboard UIs have been getting a lot of geek attention lately, especially in the Gran Turismo-inspired Nissan GT-R. For now it's still just a concept, but it's reported that it, or something like it, will soon find its way into Audi SUVs. Can we call it KITT? [TG Daily via Crunch Gear]

Futuremark Announces Groundbreaking Automotive Demo for Audi at NVISION

San Jose, California – Aug. 25th, 2008 – Futuremark, creators of the industry standard benchmarking software for graphics performance for OpenGL ES and DirectX APIs, has created a demonstration for Audi’s In-Car Graphics System future concept to be shown for the first time at NVISION in San Jose. It delivers a fully rendered car dashboard and all instruments shown in a 3D view, including 3D navigation using stunning and realistic effects and viewsas well as a 3D car infotainment system with vehicle info and cool 3D environmental controls rendered in real-time for on-road Automotive usage.

“We are delighted to work with Audi due to their professional expertise in the car industry,” said Petri Talala, Vice President and General Manager of the Handheld and Embedded Group at Futuremark Oy., “Audi is a leader in this field with sophisticated, real-time rendered and high quality content available for future infotainment systems, and being able to have our graphics engine experts and artists contribute to this effort is very special for Futuremark.”

In-Car graphics systems are evolving rapidly with an increasing amount of digital instrumentation used inside of automotive designs. Khronos APIs such as OpenGL and OpenGL ES will be widely adopted for rendering backend of digital instrumentation. With this new automotive demo, Futuremark is showing the flexibility of both its OpenGL ES engines and its art pipelines that were used to deliver this project on an entirely new platform to Audi’s delight. The Engines and Pipeline Tools used to create the demo are all available for licensing directly from Futuremark. Also offered are custom demo services for Automotive companies who want to show off tomorrows User Interface and Digital 3D designs for Automobiles today. <![CDATA[Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update Comes in November]]> Microsoft's just gone on the record with RPG-TV and said the Fall Xbox 360 Dashboard Update will be hitting in November, which technically is still a part of Fall. Previous updates have also been released in late November (as close to Winter as you could push it while still being Fall), but all those new features coming this time might be cause for delay, even though they skipped the Spring update for this reason. <![CDATA[Old School Digital Car Dashboard Roundup Is an LCD Light Show]]> Motive mag takes a look at the digital dashboards of the 1980s; a time where men were men and electronic car computer technology barely made anything fancier than some green LCDs. Man, we'd like to see more of this kind of digital Knight Rider-esque readout in modern cars, but we have a feeling that the tach on the Prius would look pretty pitiful. [Motive Mag]

<![CDATA[Knight Rider iPhone-Inspired Interior Officially Revealed]]> The new KITT's dashboard has been officially revealed, confirming the previously leaked image (in high resolution after the jump, along with a gratuitous—but necessary—photo of the new car and the Hoff at the Playboy Mansion) and Knight Rider's producer David Bartis' words about the interior design's similarities with the iPhone:

You look at the iPhone and you go—thats the coolest phone out there. It's just a flat screen that you can touch and access anything. So the iPhone interface was actually a big inspiration for the way the interior of this car would look because its very simple, it's very streamlined, it's very clean.

kitty-interior.jpg

Looks like Bartis is right: aluminum on leather, check. Touchscreen, check. Glossy surfaces, check. Simplicity, check. Almost no knobs, except the new driver, who makes the Hoff looks like Olivier, Marlon Brando, Pacino and DeNiro combined, check. Voice spectrometer that look like an iTunes's visualizer? Check. Apple Bluetooth keyboard? Not checked, but looks like it. What do you think? Is it really iPhone-inspired?

<![CDATA[Xbox 360 Fall Update Full Details (DivX! XviD!)]]> Update: Apparently there's actually something good in this update! Too bad they didn't actually include it in the press release, but the Xbox 360 will support DivX and XviD! Hurray! Here's what we got from the Xbox team:

**15. What types of AVI files are supported?

The Xbox 360 supports files encoded using MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple and Advanced Simple Profile. These files are often referred to as Xvid or DivX® video files. Many common PC DVD authoring tools, cameras, and camcorders are capable of encoding files using MPEG-4. Note that some files authored for DivX devices may also contain additional functionality(menus, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, etc). The Xbox 360 will attempt to play these files, but does not support any of the additional functionality and in some cases will be unable to play the file.

16. Why don't some of my older versions of DivX® files play?

Since we only support Mpeg-4 compatible codec implementations, we will not be able to play video files older than DivX® 5.0.

Original post, before we knew about DivX:

We thought that the previously released details of Xbox 360's Fall Update were kinda lame, and hoped the rest of the yet-to-be-released features would make up for the fact that seeing your friends' friends, parental timers, and downloadable Xbox 1 games are so-so at best. No such luck. Microsoft's just dropped the rest of the details, and they're not so great either.

The new features are Xbox LIVE Arcade Hits (a plan to discount older XBLA games permanently), Inside Xbox (a news stream from Xbox.com to your Dashboard), an enhanced online profile (you can enter in more details about yourself), full-screen movie previews, and slightly changed navigation. Here's the full release:

MORE DOWNLOAD OPTIONS:
Xbox Originals - With this new service, announced on Nov. 13, consumers can download-to-own full original Xbox games that were previously only available at retail. The digital shelves will always be stocked with classic titles, such as "Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex," "Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge," "Halo," "Fable," "Fuzion Frenzy," "Psychonauts," and more as the catalogue grows over time, at 1200 Microsoft Points per game.

· Xbox LIVE Arcade Hits - On Xbox LIVE Arcade, the Arcade Hits program kicks off where some of the best sellers will become available at permanently reduced prices, making it easier than ever for everyone to build a library of downloadable games! The first games to become Arcade Hits will be "Bankshot Billiards 2" and "Lumines LIVE," which will be available for 800 Microsoft Points each, and "Marble Blast Ultra," "Small Arms" and "Zuma Deluxe," which will be available for 400 Microsoft Points each. With free trial downloads for every game and over 100 games to choose from, Xbox LIVE Arcade offers something for every member of the family.

NEW WAYS TO KEEP UP TO DATE AND CONNECTED:
· Inside Xbox - A new direct feed brings current news straight from Xbox.com into the Xbox LIVE Dashboard providing members an easy, predictable entry point where they can discover what's new in: game releases, events, and Xbox LIVE Marketplace offers.

· Enhanced online profile - Members interested in sharing a few more details about themselves will have the option to go beyond their motto and further personalize their profile with an expanded bio. The extended bios will be visible to "Friends Only" or the entire Xbox LIVE community.

· Expanded Friends List access - A quick and easy way for gamers to expand their personal community on Xbox LIVE, members will be able to see the Friends Lists of other Xbox LIVE members, boosting their social networking experience on the service.

ENHANCED OVERALL EXPERIENCE AND CONTROL:
Enhanced Parental Controls - Family Timer, a strong and flexible new addition to the Xbox 360 Family Settings, enables parents to set the amount of time their Xbox 360 can be used on a per-day or per-week basis by their children or other members of the household.

New video features - The convenience of full-screen movie previews and enhanced video codec support further expand the options when it comes to the Xbox 360 entertainment experience.

· Easy-to-use navigation features - With several noteworthy changes in the Xbox LIVE Dashboard, from the new Game Store button to the Video Store button to enhanced visuals and descriptions in the video library, Xbox LIVE members can find what they want, when they want it.

<![CDATA[Question of the Day: Xbox 360 Fall Update Brings What?]]> We already know that the fall Dashboard update for Xbox 360 will bring expanded friends list viewing, parental timers, and original Xbox game downloads, but what else will it bring? There's got to be a reason why the fall update has dragged on past fall into winter (last year's update came in October), but what is it exactly? We really hope it's the rumored DivX compatibility, what with the PS3 and Microsoft's own 3rd Gen Media Center Extenders getting in on the DivX and XviD action as well. What do you think is coming? What else could possibly be added to the Xbox experience to make it better? A friend in his PJs to play with you with every purchase?
