I've read several reviews that says Dyson vacuums aren't actually very good at vacuuming.

It's pretty silly to come up with new wheel and motor technology when your product doesn't do it's primary job as well as 1/2 price competitors.

I've been debating on getting a Dyson (full size version) and can't seem to pull the trigger. We have a dog that sheds and I've heard the Dyson vacuum is very good at getting the hair up and out of the carpet. Is this true? Are they worth the price?

@Dr.Jeckyl: I love my Animal DC-17. I have two cats and every couple of weeks, I vacuum up a third cat in cat hair. It does require some maintaining. There is a U-bend that clogs but it is user-accessible and easy to clear. It also comes with a good assortment of tools like the mini-turbine head for upholstery.

I had a Bosch before it (same basic design); it used plastic gears instead of metal which wore down and could not be replaced. It was a waste of $200.

The DC-17 is a bit overpriced but pretty damned durable. If you're willing to part with the money, it's by and large worth it.

Um, holy shit. After a quick calculation, it would seem that a point at a radius of 1 cm from the center of rotation would experience a centripetal acceleration of about 121,000 Gs!! I hope they tested this motor extensively, because that has serious potential to fail catastrophically.

I wonder what it is made out of. Aircraft engines are made out of specially crystallized alloys to micron tolerances, and this thing goes 10 times as fast? Wow.

Yeah, the Pricetag on his inventions certainly gives me reluctance about buying one. For that price I'd rather just pay the extra and go with the central Vacuum setup instead.

you could put the best central vac in the world in your house, it won't have the suction at the hose that a dyson has...or Miele canister for that matter. Not only that, but the power nozzle(agitators) on CV's are crap. And the power nozzle design is just as important, if not more so, than the amount of CFM.

@fastharry: Actually, you're wrong. Dyson vacuums are not all that great.

In fact, Consumer Reports pretty much never rates them all that well.

I've owned a Central Vacuum, and I've seen how well they can clean carpet first hand. Not to mention the fact that even the filtered air is still vented outside the house. For those with allergies this is a huge boon.

@Six Demon Bag: Lite: Have you owned a Dyson though? I've never understood why Consumer Reports dumps on Dyson. Sure they're expensive and look funny. However, my DC07 Animal has absolutely dominated every vacuum I've ever used including a central one. I have nothing but praises for it. Sure, the price tag was steep, but the Dyson delivered on every penny. It picks up stuff the other vacuums missed. A lot of people seem to be turned off by the price, colors, design, noise, or name. They use those to form opinions about Dysons without even giving them a chance.

@Six Demon Bag: Lite: I vote you're wrong as well, considering again...you haven't owned one. As an avid reader of consumer reports I swore they must have gotten a completely different vacuum. Pitting our Dyson Animal against our old traditional vacuum is a complete no contest. The Dyson makes clean floors seem dirty...

@BigDragon: Why? Because when compared to other vacuums side-by-side they're really not that great. For example, the DC28 Animal received a Very Good at cleaning pet hair, where a model about 1/3 its price received excellent. Along with outperforming it on both Carpet and for total airflow.

@fryhole: Which completely different vacuum? They (CR) go buy the product off the shelf just like you. They have an objective test methodology that they use to rate the items.

I'm not saying they're not good, but for the money they're not THAT good.
