It's unconfirmed, and we hope it's not correct—it'd seriously slow down USB 3.0's adoption.

Without Intel supporting the standard, motherboard manufacturers and gadget makers alike would probably hold off on using USB 3.0, since it would require a relatively expensive third-party controller (as it does now). An Intel rep said he hadn't heard of such a delay, but with Intel focused on its next-gen Nehalem chips (and given the company's neglect of wireless USB), it's not impossible. We'll keep you updated if we get confirmation either way. [EE Times via Tech Report]

<![CDATA[Heroic Passenger Fixes Aircraft, Deserves Ticker Tape Parade]]> He may not be on the same level as Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, but to the passengers of Thomas Cook flight TCX9641, the aircraft engineer traveling on board was a true hero.

After learning that the aircraft was experiencing a technical problem that would require an eight hour delay, the as yet unidentified passenger came forward claiming to be an aircraft engineer that was qualified to work on the Boeing 757-200. After following strict procedures to confirm his credentials, the man was allowed to work on the plane. In the end, the Thomas Cook flight arrived at its destination only 35 minutes late. Needless to say, I'll bet you can think of a personal situation where a dude like this would have come in really handy. [BBC via Slashdot]

<![CDATA[Palm Pro Delayed Again]]> The delayed February 15th date we heard for Palm's flagship Windows Mobile phone, the Palm Pro, has slipped again, according to Boy Genius. It may be one of the best Windows Mobile phones ever, but I'm happy enough waiting for the Palm Pre, so this doesn't bother me one bit. [Boy Genius Report]

<![CDATA[Senate Expected to Delay DTV Transition to June 12th on Optional Basis]]> Because there are 1.4 million households on the underfunded digital converter voucher waiting list, the Senate is finalizing a proposal to delay the DTV switchover to June 12th—a bill that's expected to pass unanimously.

The bill (a rewrite of the Obama-supported Sen. Jay Rockefeller plan) doesn't look to provide more funding for DTV vouchers—it's more a slam on the brakes maneuver to buy everyone some time. The most important point about the bill, however, is that it leaves broadcasters the "option" to still make the DTV switch on February 17th.

On one hand, that's the only fair plan that the government could leave broadcasters after forcing them to make major internal technological revisions. On the other, viewers who weren't prepped for February 17th could still lose some (or even all) channels in spite of the formal delay. [WSJ and Getty Images Photo]

<![CDATA[Gizmondo Delayed for Massive Redesign: Will Christmas Ever Be the Same?]]> The six of you who have been following Gizmondo know that a new version was promised for this Christmas season. But surprise, surprise: it's been delayed due to economic instability and general crappiness.

A Swedish blogger met up with Gizmondo founder Carl Freer to discuss the future of the scandal-ridden handheld maker. Freer admitted that the worldwide economic implosion forced most of his investors to drop out, and he's had to totally redesign the product. He plans to launch the new Gizmondo as an OEMed pocket PC, a bit like an HTC smartphone with gaming guts. It'll be focusing on downloadable games and other content, like Apple's App Store, and will come in two versions: Windows CE and Android. Since it'll be based on a smartphone design, it will also be a phone, but it won't come cheap.

By now we all know to take everything anybody associated with Gizmondo says with a giant mountain of salt. It's anybody's guess as to whether this new Gizmondo will ever go into production. But this is one enormously entertaining company, so I hope they stick around at least until the next scandal. [The Nordic Link via Engadget]

<![CDATA[BlackBerry Storm's Shipping Delay: Blame the Firmware]]> Orders of the BlackBerry Storm online have been delayed, and according to some detective work from the Boy Genius Report, it's not due to intense demand. The Storm that BGR got to toy around with was loaded with the OS firmware 4.7.0.82, yet all the Storms being sold now are branded .65. What gives?

The logical conclusion is that there was a problem with the .82 firmware, and it was so severe that every Storm had to be downgraded before release, hence the delays. It sounds a little far-fetched, but after peeling off the sticker reading .65, BGR found another sticker underneath reading .82. In other words, these phones were originally loaded with the newer firmware, but something went wrong.

As far as shipment goes, here's the rule:

- Bought before noon on Nov. 21: will ship Nov. 25.
- Bought after noon on Nov. 21: will ship Dec. 5.
- Bought on Nov. 22 (today) or later: will not ship until after Dec. 15.

If you haven't bought your Storm yet, you better cross your fingers extra hard because it's not looking likely that it'll make it to you before a certain major religious holiday. [BGR]

<![CDATA[Garmin's Nuvifone Gets Delayed 'Til 2009]]> Garmin has just made a announcement stating that the much-hyped Nuvifone GPS/cellphone product is going to be delayed until the "first half of 2009." Apparently "meeting some of the carrier specific requirements will take longer than anticipated," so it's going to miss its previously mentioned slot at the end of this year. Sounds like bad news for a phone that's entering an increasingly populated multi-purpose handset market. [GPSTracklog]

<![CDATA[Xperia X1 Delayed Till 2009?]]> We brought you news that Sony Ericsson's first Windows Mobile smartphone would ship mid 2008, however, the guys at Sony Ericsson Blog have spotted an official Sony Ericsson webpage showing the expected release date as 10/02/2009.

Considering Sony Ericsson Blog are as reliable as a really reliable source, and that they have pointed us in the direction of an official webpage backing their claim, this looks to be solid. If true, the wow factor of the Xperia X1 just may fade a little; who knows what we may see by 2009? We'll bring you any updates as we receive them, but a delay would surely suck big time for those awaiting the Windows Mobile 6.1 running, dual touch and QWERTY sliding, sexy beast that is the Xperia X1. <![CDATA[iPhone SDK Delayed By One to Three Weeks?]]> Arik Hesseldahl of Business Week claims that a source tells him the official iPhone SDK will be delayed by one to three weeks, much like the recent delay in the Apple TV 2.0 upgrade (2 weeks). Apple hasn't made any official statement, but there's only a week left for them to hit their previously-announced "February" release date. To lend credibility to this rumor, Arik points to the fact that Business Week was the first to report on Apple's eventual announcement of the official SDK back in October. [Business Week]

<![CDATA[Nokia N-Gage First Access Gaming Platform Delayed Until 2008]]> Nokia's "First Access" service that would let N81 owners play the 2nd Generation N-Gage games has been delayed until 2008, citing issues that they discovered via their 1000 global testers. We actually tested this new N-Gage platform earlier this year, and found it kind of to be like an Xbox Live Lite for mobiles. It seems (from this patent) that Nokia is seriously thinking about beefing up the N-Gage experience, and a successful launch sans bugs goes a big way into doing so. [N-Gage Blog]

<![CDATA[Microsoft Surface Table Delayed - Picky Customers to Blame]]> Unfortunately for electronic table fetishists everywhere, you won't be able to walk into a restaurant, a casino or a retail outlet and play with a Microsoft Surface table until spring of next year. Why isn't it surfacing until then? Partners.

Partners who need Microsoft's help to build custom apps to fit Harrah's, Sheraton and T-Mobile needs for gambling, sleeping and phone choosing. Beyond the delay, Microsoft also has some interesting plans to expand from just the retail and hospitality industry to government, education and enterprise businesses to eventually, as Gates predicts, be on "every table," "every whiteboard," "every mirror" within 5 to 10 years. Anecdotally, it so happens that three people I know sent in their 360s around this time, and it took them about three or four weeks to get theirs back, with one still Xbox-less. [Kotaku]

Wrapping up Apple TV is taking a few weeks longer than we projected
So what's the hold up? The device looked pretty ready to go a few weeks ago. Are they having trouble putting together the device as we saw it? Or, are they readying One More Thing?

Either way, I really miss the days when an Apple product was in the store the day of the announcement
