Meh, screw that.

@Wilson Rothman: I understand that, but it has always referred to something that could game. If this can't, it's going to give birth to some cognitive dissonance.
It's sort of a toss-up of tradeoffs, and to really think about it, it's sort of hard to consider the processor and graphics power when neither of these devices were really designed to be powerhouses anyway. Longer battery life is always tempting, but I question how much more it actually saves. If I really had to choose, I'd go Air. SSD is nice, but the Air no longer suffers the crappy PATA iPod hard drives.

The 3G is a nice feature but i think it'd rather have the 9400 Nvidia and the faster processor in the Air any day. Plus upgrading RAM your-self is cheap so i'd have to say price vs performance, the Air is a better buy.
@Eavangel: Upgrading the RAM on the Air is near impossible. The 2GB is directly soldered to the motherboard.
The 4GB of ram on the Adamo and 3G is the only advantage they have over the Air. Whereas the Air has a faster processor, and better graphics via the 9400m.
I'm enjoying mine quite a bit. It's a great travel laptop, allowing it to be usable even in cattle class, and still enough power to play games on the go.

@drakino: I didn't realize that they were soldered in. Thanks for filling me in.
but it should be noted that the Air comes down $100 on both the low and high end model with the student discount. It applies to me but it may apply to others as well.
Wait wait wait. So YOU'RE telling ME, that a 1.2 GHz C2D Dell Adamo costs the same as a 1.86 GHz C2D Macbook Air!?!? And this is a good thing, HOW again?
@TheSonOfKrypton: The Dell Adamo uses the SU series of Core 2 Duo processors from Intel, which have 3MB L2 cache, 800MHz fsb and 10w max TDP. The Macbook Air uses the SL series of C2D processors, which have 6MB L2 cache, 1066MHz fsb and 17w max TDP. Both are built on the 45nm fabrication process.
The SL series chips in the lower end macbook airs actually cost more than the lower end SU series in the Adamos.
Dell attempted to provide a better battery life with a process/graphics combo that used less energy. Unfortunately, it seems so underpowered that it runs full blast for task that normally wouldn't be "processor intensive" almost completely negating the gains of using low power components.
@TheSonOfKrypton: it's the SSD that bumps it up in price. Those things are expensive. Not that I'm trying to defend Dell's pricing on this -- the Adamo is clearly the Ishtar of computing.
@weatherman: The $1800 MacBook Air also comes with a 128GB SSD. So high end Adamo owners are paying $430 for 2 extra GB of RAM and 3G wireless, slower processor and Intel 3D video.
@TheSonOfKrypton: On another note, does anyone else literally visualize an adam's apple whenever they hear about this laptop? I do. Dunno why. It's kinda creepy tho.
As a child I pretty much took everything apart and put it back together. Any electronic toy, the gas grill, the edger, the lawnmower... Boy did I freak my parents out.
Seeing peeks of hardware open like this is like when you're on an escalator, and the gal ahead of you is wearing a skirt, and you just barely get a peek of what's beneath.
Only, they're photos and you don't really get a true sense of how much shoehorning and engineering goes into the hardware package.
This laptop isn't all bad. I don't care for the aesthetic in the least, but it does make up for it by having a decent amount of peripheral ports. Unfortunately, they're all stuffed in the back, just like my aging fatass Inspiron 8200. For this kind of money, a lightweight Thinkpad is superior, OS preferences notwithstanding.
Dell gets an A for effort, but I'd give the final product a C. The Macbook Air has nicer specs, but if I were to upgrade the lower end model with an SSD, we're looking at $300 more, but do get the better shared graphics and a slightly better processor.
Can't you two see, that you're in love with each other?
Anyway, there's no comparison between this and an Atom-powered netbook. This thing may be weaker than a Macbook Air, but it would likely run rings around the likes of an NC10 and Dell Mini.
Am I the only one that thinks this thing is fugly? 1997 called, they want their notebook hinge back. There's got to be a reason they're not giving us a full frontal shot here. I don't think this design is "timeless" I think its dated. Also, 0.65 inches throughout isn't that thin...I mean, it's pretty thin, but I personally really like the Air's design a bit more...I don't think making something boxy and hingy and ugly but thin constitutes good design.
@TheCrudMan: I agree about the hinge though - it does look dated, but more importantly I think the design would limit the angle of the screen. I find it really annoying when a laptop screen doesn't go close to 180 degrees because in some situations, like using it on my lap, the screen needs to be able to almost lay flat.

XPS - higher end consumer / gaming
Adamo - luxury
Latitude/Optiplex - business
Precision - workstation class
And then all the server type stuff.

Except for the solder on the air's ram.
That might be a bit tricky.
Though the adamo's ram is irreplaceable too.
