Pretty interesting...
But my number one priority right now is a tablet netbook.
Also, I'm still stuck with my Dell XPS 1330 which had to have it's mainboard replaced 3 times (in two years) already due to NVidia chipset failure. Warranty is over now, so I can't even play games on it fearing the chipset will overheat again.
And I promised myself to never ever spend this much money on a laptop with NVidia graphics card. I don't care if ATI is worse, overheats or whatever... my old Acer lappie had an ATI X700 mobility card and never failed on me once.
@IverMussaid: External DVD/CD drive. Not as seamless a setup as a built-in optical, but where other than home are you going to go around installing new software most of the time?
@Kaiser-Machead: I dunno about you, but I prefer to install my software while skydiving. It would be very dangerous to have a DVD drive flapping about on a USB cable while I'm trying to read the EULA and pull my chute's ripcord.
@walker2151: I'm pretty sure that's the other way around, though I don't have the numbers to show for it. Lots and lots of suites are being distributed over the web, rather than in retail packaging.
@Bokusatsu_Tenshi:
Well considering this laptop is deadweight in general, then it should be fit with an optical drive. Its not thin its beveled from 0.8 inches to 1.22 inches. Its not small its a 14 inch laptop. Also most laptops with a screen size greater than 13 inches are for media or pro use.
I really like the Studio designs. Dell's really got the best looking PCs out there, and is challenging Apple for both design and performance, at a much lower price. I've been considering getting one of those Studio XPS machines, but this might be just as good for my needs. 4.2 lbs isn't bad for a 14" machine, and I don't really need an optical drive with me most of the time anyway.
The one thing that's stopping me from getting a Dell Studio (either the XPS or this one) is the lack of a 512mb video card option. HP's got a seemingly decent machine that has a 512mb vid card, though it's not the Nvidia GeForce 9600M that I would prefer. Hopefully Dell will get it together and come up with 9600M option by July 1st, which is when I've decided I'm buying my next PC.
What about a studio xps 16? That has a 512MB ATI graphics graphics card, and by all accounts it isnt bad. On top of that the rest of the laptop is fantastic. Its just too bad a well specced one costs nearly as much as a macbook pro. At least you get a 1080p full RGB LED screen with the dell though.
@knyghtryda: does it? I didn't realize. I'd been looking at the Studio XPS 13. The 16 inch screen just seems overly large, and comes in at 6.5lbs. I suppose it's a competitor to the Macbook Pro, but I need to be a little more portable than that.
Waqit a sec... They are selling this really nice laptop which can be spec'd out nicely, for 3 to 4 times less than the low spec'd Adamo? Dell is being stoopid again.

As for the optical drive, well I don't really use 'em on a laptop that much anymore.
Maybe for installs, but all my media has been ripped to my computer at this point and even installs are on my server now.
I dunno, it only seems important for installs nowadays, at least for me.

But yeah, I guess most people still buy the optical media.

No reason for you maybe, but tons of people will be interested in this.
I for one only use a DVD drive only when I need to backup some stuff, so it's dead weight when I carry my laptop around.
