Yarg... T/S lenses DON'T ROTATE. While some might to compensate for not having swings (i.e. using tilts for swings), rotation has nothing to do with any change in image.

Tilts and swings refer to moving the lens out of parallel with the image plane. This alters the plane of critical focus.

Shifts move the lens axis off center from the image plane, utilizing the outside of the image cone to produce the image. This alters perspective and allows for corrections of vanishing point perspective (i.e. looking upwards at a building, the sides of the building can still be parallel as they are in real life).

@Tommasta: Umm... actually the "Tilt" aspect of TS photography refers to the rotation of the lens.... it's the "Shift" portion that angles the lens parallel to the plane of focus.

The term "Tilt" in photography (not just TF depth of field shenanigans) specifically refers to rotation around the horizontal axis.

I don't mean to get all schoolyard on you by pulling out the wiki, but check it here, it's actually a pretty nice reference....

It's probably not even REAL tilt-shift... it's pretty easy to simulate the depth of field using photoshop, especially with time-lapse photography where all you have to do is batch apply the bluring...

really impressive though.

@lemoose: While I disagree with your troll-tastic comment style... yes, TS fakery in PS is fairly easy. Although, for a video of this length it would definitely be much easier to use AE instead.

@cpthook: Err... well, a decent TS lens will generally retail for $900 to $1500 (US Dollars). At over $1000 average, it's not exactly cheap considering that you have fairly limited options with it, as opposed to a quality zoom or wide-angle, which have multiple uses. TS Photography is a really neat gimmick, but it's still just a gimmick. So... yah, being so easy to fake, I'd rather go the Photoshop route than drop $1500 on a lens I may use only occasionally for "funny" pictures.

@lemoose: Have you actually read the article? It is real tilt-shift. You can't emulate that look with Photoshop. You can get the blurring effect, but not the perspective correction.

it wasn't until about a minute in when I realized those weren't HOT WHEELS cars, plastic dolls or claymation people, but real life footage. Good thing my self-esteem has already hit rock bottom

At about 3-ish minutes long, this Terror of Tiny Town version of a demolition derby was just about as much "fun" as I could take. But I did like the cute, ant-like people.

Unfortunately, from my (non-tilt-shifted) perspective, the real thing is for ant-brained people. I mean, I just cannot imagine my personal agony if I were forced to endure one of these "events" in real life. (Astonishingly to me, you apparently actually have to pay money to sit through one of these things. Not "they pay you", no, "you pay them".)
