    Am I the only one who thinks this is a good idea? In its mature form, it's like the question-answer hologram that the murdered inventor in iRobot leaves for Will Smith. A virtual likeness of someone who can respond to basic prompts. It's interesting in general, and given the needs of a young child with a deployed parent, maybe it will help them miss the parent that much less. Worth a try.... I guess.

    Of course, the military's interest isn't only the kid, it's also the soldier. A soldier who is less distracted by the anxiety his/her absence causes to his/her child will be a better soldier.

    I find this heartbreaking on a maternal level and horrifying on a technical level. What if the enemy hacked in and little kids everywhere tell Mommy/Daddy, "I love you" and V-parent says "I hate you" back. No good can come of this.

    Given the burnability of children's skin, letting your child sit with a hot metal laptop on her legs is probably not a good idea.

    @OMG! Ponies!:

    Children actually grow more due to photosynthesis and heat than they do from food and water. Their like plants or something, I though that was common knowledge, you obviously don't have children. :)
