    You want an easier way to test if it is a diamond? Try a hammer. If it breaks, it wasn't a diamond.

    @Jeff_McAwes0me:

    If it was a diamond it will still break. >REALLY< bad way to try to test a diamond. A lot of good ones have been smashed to dust through just such assumptions.

    They may be hard, but they are crystals and will split along cleavage planes just like any other.

    How do you think they get faceted anyway?

    @stunmonkey: I was under the impression they used The Force to facet diamonds.

    tip:

    go to a reputable LOCAL jeweler with a good reputation.

    If they are a good jeweler, you will be able to take the diamond to another one and have to appraised.

    THAT is how you buy a diamond.

    @89macrunner: I usually take more than one diamond from my local jewelers. My biggest problem is ditching the get-a-way car.

    Diamonds are just sparkling rocks and it surprised me that the human race is still infatuated with stones that look pretty. "Ooooo look at that sparkly thing, it would look good with this shiny ring of metal. Of course I'll marry you if I can have this shiny pretty thing."

    @tridtaei: Well, to be more correct, about half the population is infatuated with stones that look pretty. The other almost half is infatuated with the first half, and does what it must to get into their pants.
