Also, please keep in mind that the $28,000 Epic-X package is only available to people who had already purchased RED Ones...anyone who is purchasing the camera without having previously owned a RED One will not be getting the extra accessories for the $28,000, and the camera will be the Epic, not the Epic-X variation. #reddsmc
Before the announcement I'd been waiting anxiously for months for more news...and I wasn't disappointed. I'm definitely still buying a Scarlet despite the minor price increase. #reddsmc
As a still photographer who is looking to add video to his bag o' tricks, I was very very interested in the RED modular system. Sadly, with no time line or pricing I am forced to go elsewhere.
Unless of course RED wanted to let me skip the whole having to own a RED ONE and let me beta some Scarlet gear.... #reddsmc
@szrimaging: I think that if you're primarily a stills photographer, the Canon 5D Mark II (or the 1D Mark IV) would be much better suited for your needs anyway - more familiar interface, extremely good lowlight performance in the 1D Mark IV, and no need to buy insanely expensive extra film equipment (cords for RED systems cost ~$200 each, the hard drives and SSDs are priced at a huge premium, and the cheapest lenses that are still good for film, the Zeiss Nikon Mount ZF lenses, are around $7000 for a set of primes.)
I'm a huge RED fan, but for those who have no real need to finish or edit in 4k RAW, there's really no point in buying a Scarlet, and the Mark IV is proven in cinematography with the right addons and in the right hands.
I'm definitely still buying a Scarlet, but then I'd be using it primarily for video. #reddsmc
@ytkliu: Actually, the Canon interface is no familiar than the RED interface will be. Sure, there are some similarities to my Nikon gear, but you would still have to learn a lot. And shooting 4k or 5k video actually proves to have some interesting advantages for a still photographer. Not to mention REDCode Raw. I can set up and shoot the video of something at 5k, then take a frame out of that video to create the photo. It was down for a few magazine covers already. So now, I have not only a high quality photo that I can deliver my client, but also video. All without sacrificing image quality. #reddsmc
@ytkliu: I should add, I am buying a set of zf lenses because I want them anyways. I miss manual focus lenses like those. Also, you don't NEED to start with the whole kit. A 50mm, 21mm or 18mm, and the 100mm should be good to start with, especially in a studio.
@szrimaging: In that case - waiting for the Scarlet seems to be a good idea! Yeah - the Esquire covers were framegrabs from the RED, and they were done pretty well. Were you planning to get the 2/3", S35, or FF35? I suppose you've already done your research so you know about the DoF differences and crop factors? I bought a Nikon D90 myself to tide me over until the Scarlet gets here, but the rolling shutter problem is horrendous. #reddsmc
@ytkliu: I'm not even worried about video performance on my DSLR, and am most likely upgrading to a D700 in the next couple of months.
As far as sensors go, if the price is good, I was after the FF35 sensor. If it was a little too expensive, the S35. I will not buy the 2/3, its just too small. And yes, I fully understand the differnces in the different formats.
And an FYI, I have a BFA in photography and am a bit of a gear nerd. #reddsmc
@szrimaging: Haha sweet! Sorry to doubt you - there's just a lot of people who post about RED without doing very much research. The quoted prices before for the S35 and the FF35 weren't TOO bad, with the S35 brain in the 7k range and the FF35 brain in the 9k range I believe. That's substantially more than an SLR but also has a much bigger featureset, although they did say that they'd raise the price, albeit slightly. #reddsmc
I've personally lost my interest in RED. Too much vaporware and products that are simply not sustainable to create by this small company. And the prices keep going up! I blogged about the whole thing here. #reddsmc
@Eugenia: Just because revolutionary products are coming to market a little slower than you'd like doesn't make them vapourware. It's been about a year since the first hints of the Epic were released, and now there are early production models being made. Prices might be rising, but RED is still really competitive compared to what your 30 grand will buy you from competing companies. #reddsmc
@Eugenia: I think calling anything being released by the company that made the RED One "vaporware" is taking a bit of a leap - the first Mysterium-X sensor equipped cameras have recently been tested by some prominent DoP's and Directors and received strong praise.
Despite what personal opinions you may have about it, there's no doubt that RED as a company is affecting the accessibility and workflow of the film industry almost singlehandedly. The adoption rate of the RED One is frankly astonishing for a camera that many classified as "vaporware" before it was released and for a product that is the first one put out by a fledgling company. #reddsmc
@David Hildreth: It definitely isn't...compared to the Panavision Genesis and Cinealta F35 (the Cinealta has a retail price of ~$250,000 and the Genesis isn't even available for purchase, although rental prices for it are $4000 a DAY. For the price of the Epic, you can rent a Genesis for a week. #reddsmc
