    It would be easier if they just made a form to file with your taxes for a deduction (capped at 2 per household) and asked for a copy of a reciept to claim it.

    @justinpe: I actually meant for 2009 taxes, since thats when the implementation takes place. (The cost savings alone in staffing and postage would pay for a couple of millions boxes and the fact that people wont actually claim it would cover about 75% of the rest.) You can tell I dont work for the government.

    They should expire unused coupons on the original day and reissue them to the waiting list.

    My mother ordered 2 because she wasn't sure if she'd need them or not. They've since been thrown away. I'm sure my mom wasn't the only person staring at the little cards thinking "oops?"

    There are ads saying " If you don't have cable on Feb 17 your tv won't work." People are really in the dark about this.


    In other news both my coupons expired so I guess unless I buy a HDTV or a shitty converter box I am SOL.

    @Suttin: Yes I know but might as well. You can get an HDTV for under $200 if you know where to look. I see no sense in even buying a SDTV when HDTVs are so cheap.

    @strider_mt2k: I printed out this chart from Consumerist to explain the switch to my co-workers. It worked better in 30 seconds than my 5 minutes long explanation complete w/glassed over eyes.

    @daversW: When I moved a few months ago, I didn't bother to subscribe to cable (just DSL) and the only broadcast TV I watch now is over-the-air digital, via a converter box.


    The first converter box I got wouldn't seem to power on, so I exchanged it. Turned out the only way to power it on is with the remote.

    I find myself unable to feel sorry for people who now "won't be able to watch TV" come February, as big media tends to report.


    Come on, you've had years to get a box before the program went broke. Or, you can pony up and buy a converter box all by yourself. Of course, door #3 where you pay for for a subscription service (cable, sat, etc.)


    It's not like there weren't any warnings that this was coming.
