@Blake380: Up until recently, this was confined solely to their handheld products. I don't suppose this will happen to the regular Macbooks and 15" pro for a long time. Man, I hope it never happens.
Apparently all you people didn't watch the 17" unibody non-removable battery propaganda, which clearly stated the benefit of this was that they could eliminate casings, and mechanisms to house a "removable battery", that would make it "removable", and gain some extra space to make the battery even "bigger", and gain extra life out of the system, with a little more weight, but less or the same footprint.
I still think this is kind of lame, but my ipods, and my iPhone batteries (which are non-removable), have held up pretty dang good (a lot better than my other shitty cellphone batts have).
@beekerstudios: This dissecting makes it pretty clear that it'd be easy to replace if it died on you anyway - I think the people who are concerned are mostly the ones who'd be willing to lug around an extra battery for more juice on the go.
@kaubuchon: I suppose so, but hell if lugging a 17" laptop around wouldn't get tiresome. If your main concern is mobility, I'd think that you'd prefer to lug around something smaller/lighter.
@Hello Mister Walrus: Such was the case for the previous generation of Macbook and Macbook Pro. Personally, I like the new cover being separate from the battery, much like my cell phone.
@kaubuchon: I have a rather large travel bag, so a battery this size wouldn't be that much of an issue, especially if the majority of my time will be spent sitting down on a moving vehicle. I've never swapped on-the-go though.
This dissection just blows in the faces of all fools who thought it would be impossible to make that battery user replaceable due to space constraints.
@Dafrety: @Prosperous_Poverty: Well, they would also have to add extra hardware internally for it to be user replaceable, latches, contacts, and whatnot - I mean, it does look kind of crammed in there as it is.
It looks pretty replaceable by someone who knows their way around a screwdriver anyway.
@kaubuchon: Apple obviously has some very good designers - maybe the best in the industry. This makes me believe that such an important decision regarding battery access must have been made intentionally, and not due to the difficulty of designing latches. How many Mac users actually open up their laptops and mess with the insides? It's so much easier to go to the Apple store and get people to change your battery for you. Sure, there will be a service fee, but Apple users are willing to pay premiums for their experience.
@Dafrety: Perhaps they were concerned if that huge battery came unlatched that it would fall and undoubtedly break several toes upon impact with your foot.
See, so now you should thank Apple for them looking out for your safety like that..
