Short of the horrendous plot holes and incongruous events that took place throughout the movie, it was stunning both visually and performance-wise from the cast.
It's really a shame. I wanted to like the movie, I really did, but the writing just totally ruined it. For the sake of not releasing any spoilers to the people who might actually enjoy it I'll say this: If you can look past the paper-thin plot devices and all-too-convenient events then it'll be great.
I loved this movie, but my main issue was this - how is it that the same shit that changed human DNA into alien DNA is ALSO the fuel needed for the spaceship? It seems a bit of a stretch that the liquid contained in the canister can do all that...
@pekosROB: The big question I have is why they spent 20 years making that small amount of fluid to power the shuttle when in the end they simply used their computers to tell the mother ship to use a tractor beam to pull them up? They obviously could have just tractor beamed the shuttle up to the mother ship years ago...
@Underscore_Lysdexia:
I actually liked that exchange between the characters. It shows that Christopher is actually a lot like us in that he just glossed over the truth to get Wikars to do as he wanted.
(SPOILER ALERT. . .don't even read this if you haven't seen the movie)
Am I alone in seeing this as a prequel to Halo? Many of the weapons and vehicles used can be seen as technological predecessors to counterparts in the game series - the "prawns" could have been "elites" with a little artistic license. . .(notice the colored garb signifying rank amongst them?).
The most compelling evidence - same director and producer that were originally slated for the Halo movie - are planning on releasing "Halo: Fall of Reach" in 3 years. (a significant timeframe in the movie)
@moonphrogg:
I'm sorry, but you're incorrect. Jackson and Blomkomp had been working on bringing a live action Halo to the screen prior to working on District 9 (Blomkomp having directed some short films for Halo 2 called "Landfall"), however when that project was scrapped, they moved on to making District 9 from Blomkomp's short film "Alive in Joburg."
As Jackson put it, "We woke up one morning making Halo and went to bed that night making District 9."
Blomkomp has since said that he isn't interested in the Halo project any longer.
Evil J, Prince of Half Truths and Lord of Low-Light Environments was starred
Evil J, Prince of Half Truths and Lord of Low-Light Environments was unstarred
@Joe Valasek: Not to mention that sniper rifle they were using in the end was straight from the game. (even though current cutting-edge sniper rifles look very similar)
Some other similarities - those offroad vehicles could very easily evolve into warthogs, and that command ship module could evolve into a banshee. . .
I understand that the events of the halo stories are set several hundred years in the future, and the timeframe for this movie implies that it's the not-too-distant future, but it appears to me that this could be a useful backstory to fuel the war between the covenant and humanity. . .
I'm still convinced. Too many uncanny links and similarities, and the movie sets up the franchise too well to be ignored in my opinion.
Gotta say, the movie was a little pretentious, a little full of itself, and a little preachy. The story was too slow in the beginning while simultaneously not offering enough back story to get you heavily into it. It's hard to build up the main character as a complete and total jerkoff and then offer one scene that is supposed to completely turn that view around. Even after that scene, there's long segments of world-class douchebaggery that completely undo most support for Wikus.
The entire second half of the movie was far too predicable and bland. As a movie, I really didn't think it was great, and I'm guessing the initial public euphoria will wear off.
That said, the CGI was INCREDIBLE, in a sort of understated way, thanks in part to the docu/lo-res shooting style of much of the movie. Well integrated into the story, and not too over the top.
I loved this movie, though I was told (and agree with) that some more backstory could've been in there, but throughout the flick, I was greatly entertained. Quite the bright spot in a summer of dreck.
@Kaiser-Machead: I trust your judgement, so I gotta get my butt to the theatre and see this asap. It's hard to skim the comments section of this article to avoid spoilers, which makes me want to see it even more.
Ok now, remember that scene in the trailer that totally hooked you where they had the alien in the interrogation room and they where translating what he said?
I have one question for the makers of District 9: WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT!?!?!?
Where do they come from? How did they get here? Where in the galaxy do they come from? Backstory? History of the aliens? Everything that everyone wants to know and understand about aliens if they were here for 28 years? NOTHING. Except they figured out how their weapons work and something they REALLY like to eat.
Granted it was better then GI Joe, Transformers etc, but this is one movie that I wish would have been more 30% more like "Contact" and had less cool weapons (other then Mechs, where they really that cool?) and unnecessary fight scenes. Or be 30 minutes longer with back story that truly hooked me.
@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M: Totally agreed. A lot of the hype machine produced footage and a big secret that just didn't make it into the movie or didn't amount to as much as the previews made it out to be, so while it was very good and I like it quite a bit, I was disappointed that much of it was left as a grab in commercials. There could've been so much more explained, and even if it amounted to a 2 1/2 hour movie as a result, it would've been that much better.
How could you possibly say that this was a lousy summer for science fiction? Star Trek alone makes up for any number of horrible Terminator or Transformers movies.
@chefgon: That's what I'm saying. SF fans have had nothing short of an orgy of SF movies to choose from this year... and all people can do is complain. Well that's fine I'm sure hollywood will listen and we'll be given lots of westerns and love stories next summer..
@bonedog73: I'd rather have one good SciFi movie in the summer season than five suck-ass movies. Hollywood can make shitty Westerns that don't ruin great SciFi stories and childhood nostalgic franchises all they want.
@chefgon: This was a GREAT year for science fiction, but you did have to pick and choose. Having two gems in one season such as D9 and Moon is a godsend.
When you think about the role he played, he did a phenomenal job. Especially in the scene were (if you haven't seen it stop reading?) they are testing to see if he can shoot the guns. The way he is distressed is just crazy. How can anyone even begin to understand what it would be like to have an alien left arm and being forced and electrocuted into shooting these alien weapons. And then shooting the prawn that looks frightened as hell. Reminded me of a cat for some reason.
I whole heartedly disagree that he was an idiot. Maybe you mean the character was an idiot. But the acting on his part, in my opinion, given the role, was outstanding.
@SnehalataKaplode: I agree he was great. Did you know he is actually an improv actor? it was his first time acting for a movie. He is the director's friend and so the director hired him. My source is Entertainment Weekly's spread on District 9 from last week's issue.
@SnehalataKaplode: I think the acting on everyone's part (well, maybe except his wife and father-in-law) were exceptional. The people at the beginning in the documentary style filming - they all seemed REAL, as if Aliens really DID live above JBG for the last 20 years.
I thought it they did a great job setting up Wikus' role - he just seemed like a little douche trying to impress and be tough and hero-like, when in the end, he did man up.
This movie made you forget you were watching science fiction. I was completely immersed in the movie and thats an impressive feat, with it being mostly CGI. I would recommend this movie to anyone here...
I think this very well may be my new favorite movie. I'll need some time to think about that, though.
Regardless, I was really struck by how real all the CG stuff felt. That mech was my favorite, and definitely more enjoyable to me than the boring transformers and such in other movies.
@gadam07: This was a great movie and I too need time to decided where it fits in my all time favor sci-fi.
The mech made me want this team (director/weta/jackson) to develop a Metal Gear movie as well as get them back to work on the Halo movie. I'm afraid Spielberg is going to make a lesser movie than it could have been.
@Evildead22: I think you're supposed to hate him. I mean, honestly. That mustache? Incredibly infuriating. And his whole goofy attitude throughout the eviction process? Hard to believe we're expected to like this guy.
@Evildead22: Um, that's called a character arc. He was very unlikeable at the beginning. That was intentional. You were supposed to come to respect him as he changed and grew as a character.
@Kilgore Trout: exactly. the people who haven't said they liked him in the end, must be douchebags themselves. the whole point of him being silly at the beginning was to contrast him to the person (or alien) he came to be!

I doubt this would follow the halo timeline true enough to be a prequel, but I'm not sure because I never read the books.
However, I did see some similarities to Halo, those white rifles that the army guys used were very similar in shape to the Halo Battle Rifle...

The sniper rifle was an NTW-20, a South African anti-materiel 20mm rifle.
