I was interested in the tech of Silk'n to see if was in fact laser and that the FDA would allow for people to laser themselves. It sounded dubious.

► It is NOT a laser.

On their web site they talk about laser... but in fact it is a "FLASH" based device. Just like a high powered camera flash (like the ones you buy to put on top of SLR pro cameras)

If you have ever played with a pro-flash, you'll know they heat up if you flash it in contact with skin....

This is not different, seems like it has (2) 1" bulbs side by side with a yellow filter and a fan to cool the applicator unit, while the charging circuit is in the base.

Whether this can get rid of unwanted hair... it's another thing.

@aec007: Sounds like it burns the hair itself down to the skin level, whereas lasers (if I am not mistaken) are supposed to kill the hair follicle, so it never grows back.

HHmmm, the smell of burning hair. And flesh. #diylaserhairremoval

@Curves: I looked into it ( I epilate ) about two years ago, and then last year when they "upgraded" it. It only eliminated about 50% of your hair, and the effect wears off after year or so after stopping. Electrolysis ( which is time consuming, expensive, and potentially dangerous ) is still the only real hair removal solution. #diylaserhairremoval

@nick's after the gnarly necter.. 800.: I know some guys like to get rid of body hair for swimming or body building, etc, or simply they like the look, but for me, I think they should keep it. (Embrace your inner Yeti!) It is a ticklish delight to roll naked on a hairy man. ;) #diylaserhairremoval

@Curves: I started doing it a long time ago to make road rash easier to deal with. You get addicted to it, feels much better.

Everyone has their preferences, I've never had a girl/woman complain. I'm not all that hairy on the rest of my body. #diylaserhairremoval

What's the biggie? Most of my friends have experimented with self-pancreaticoduodenectomies and resecting abdominal aortic aneurysms while commuting to work just for the adrenaline rush. Injecting yourself with botox? Laser hair removal? Pffft. That's like putting on a band aid. #diylaserhairremoval

Holy Lord in heaven. That self-botox video is awful. Skip to ~3:45 for the first injection. That lady is sketchy, for sure (and pretty ugly). And you can hear how she can't really talk well from whatever she's done in the past.
