Toshiba's Internet Connected DVD Download DL Seems Like a Bad Idea

Either Toshiba is still stinging from the HD DVD loss to Blu-ray, or they're really in need of some fast cash from the really low barrier of entry DVD market. Either way, it seems like the Japanese company is going to introduce an internet-connected DVD line called "DVD Download DL", using the nets to bring next-gen connectivity features to old-gen. This way Tosh can get easy money now from the huge DVD install base, then get into Blu-ray when that's cheaper and more widely adopted. [TGDaily]

Dual Layer Discs Not Causing Wii Errors, Cigarettes are

Word was in that copies of SSBB were causing Nintendo Wii consoles to readout a list of system errors. Nintendo has responded saying the game disc is not faulty, in fact, the likely cause is a dirty disc lens caused by smoke and general dust build-up. The SSBB disc is the first game to ship as a DL-DVD, and this type of DVD requires an increased sensitivity from the lens. So, build up that would not normally effect game play from a single layer DVD would cause errors from the dual layer variety. Thankfully, Nintendo has offered to clean any affected consoles, but they aren't issuing nicotine patches to help you quit smoking—the cleanup is going to get repetitive... [Kotaku]

Pentax *ist DL Gets Price Cut

In the wake of Pentax's new *ist DL2 6.1 megapixel DSLR camera, it looks the company is giving us a nice break on its fabulous *ist DL digital SLR kit. At $599.95, down from $799.95, the 6 megapixel camera is one of the lowest price of its kind, competing with Nikon s D50, Konica Minolta s Maxxum 5D and Canon s initial EOS Digital Rebel. It will come with a 8-55 DA lens as well as a $100 rebate on select SLR lenses through the end of March. Not bad Pentax, thanks for the help. More »

Pentax DS Upgrade

Here's more Digital SLR news. The *ist DL2 is an upgrade to the *DS and this one is an even higher end model with 6.1 megapixels and a 2.5-inch LCD. Other features include a .92in x .62in CCD image sensor, user selectable sensitivity limit between 400 and 3200 and a stainless steel chassis. But my favorite part is the Auto Picture Mode which automatically selects the most appropriate setting from Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Macro and Action given the subject and situation—which sounds really nice for photo retards like me.
