There are some examples inside the patent application, but the basic gist is that if you take a mobile device (cellphone, camera or laptop) into an area designated not-acceptable for that device to be used, it'll automatically be shut off or that particular feature will be locked. Imagine a no photography policy in museums turning off your phone, or no recording in movie theaters, or no calling in hospitals. Not a bad idea for the office either. [Unwired View]

<![CDATA[Butterfly Knife-esque CD/MP3 Concept]]> MP3s may be the wave of the future, but that doesn't mean we've had the initiative to digitize our CD collection. This Dual Music Player concept is a both a portable MP3 player and a more portable CD player. Unfolding รก la butterfly knife, the DMP concept spins your CDs while exposed to the world, but we bet the effect would look pretty wicked (especially when operating the dual purpose, self defense saw function).

Yanko commenters recommend the device rips CDs for you. And, while that idea completely makes sense, it also shows how understandably futile the portable CD player market has become. I for one miss the mechanical nature of musical playback. But then again, the near limitless battery life, micro designs and skip-free operation do a lot to make up for my illogical playback preferences. [yanko]

<![CDATA[Beosound 6 MP3 Player, Great Looks at Even Greater Cost]]> Bang & Olufsen's Beosound 6 MP3 player is definitely a "come and get me" nod toward the Nano market—albeit the few people in the Nano market who would be happy to spunk a schmazillion bucks on an MP3 player with poxy 4GB memory (are there any out there?) So what has ramped the price up to over four times the price of an equivalent Nano—surely it's not the leather case and A8 earphones that accompany it...

Based on the design of the Samsung YP-Z5 MP3, the Beosound 6 shares the Korean player's interface. Measuring 3.5 x 1.7 x 0.5 inches, it sports a 1.8-inch color LCD screen. Battery life is 24 hours, and it supports both MP3 and WMA formats.

So, all that for $812, eh? *Faints*. [Beoworld]

<![CDATA[Tomato U2 Multimedia Player is Not Quite Ripe]]> All right all you iPod worshipers, don't start throwing tomatoes at the Tomato U20 digital media player just yet, because it actually looks pretty nice and has more features than the iPod nano. It's available in 1GB, 2GB, and 4 GB capacities, and plays back audio and video in your choice of MP3, MP4, WMV and ASF formats.

Too bad it has that tiny 2-inch 4x3 screen, but slightly makes up for that by including an FM tuner and a miniSD slot for when you inevitably run out of disk space. The as-yet-unpriced Tomato U20 looks nice, but considering the competition in this hot multimedia player market right now, we're still thinking it's a few lettuce leaves short of a full salad. You can start throwing those tomatoes now.

<![CDATA[Ozone Inflatable Lounger; Pimp Your Dorm]]> I remember from my boarding school days, how envious I was of the kids who managed to scramble a chair our couch into their rooms. The only problem was lugging something as big as a love seat all the way from eastern Pennsylvania down to Maryland.

The Ozone Inflatable Lounger is the perfect solution for that problem. Not only is it easy to transport since it's inflatable, but also easy to move, inexpensive ($57), comfortable, and has built in speakers. Best of all the speakers draw their power your DMP of choice or even a TV, so there's no need to use up one of those oh so precious power outlets.
