I like to think that it's a cascading effect. One was stolen, so that student stole the next one to finish his homework, then that forced the next person to steal one...
Now there's evidently an epidemic of stealing $12 memory sticks. Or a lot of lazy students.

Funny enough; my neighbors dog actually ate through the cable linking my cable, phone, and internet thus I could have honestly used the "my neighbors dog ate it" excuse. Of course I was not in any classes when that happened so that chance has passed me by. Not to mention at the time the situation was not that funny at all, in fact I still bear a bit of animosity towards that dog.
