To me, the most appealing aspect of the iPod is that it is that the UI is almost completely free of clutter. With a Zune or something like that, you always have little patterns and stuff that are going on in the background. It doesn't look cool, it's just distracting. In fact, I like the interface of the old Videos better than that of the Classic's. I really don't give a shit about what album art is in a given playlist. Give me that half of the screen back, please. Also, a huge part of the iPod's appeal is the Touch's wifi capabilities. I know so many people who use their iPods more for Facebook than music.

I think thios is due to more people associating with ipod as an mp3 player then as a brand of mp3 players. My dad bought a generic cheap mp3 player from walmart and calls it an ipod all the time. It's like when I worked at EB back in the late 90s the Saturn and Playstation just released and everyone thought Nintendo had made them... Nintendo = game console, not a brand back then.

@pevans34: It's a valid question though. Why the hell should parents just get their children an MP3 player costing hundreds of dollars for no reason? If they want it, they should work for it.

Before i put my hands on an iphone, i went out of my way 4 times in 3 years of getting my wife an mp3 player to not get an ipod. All 4 of those devices died an early death, creative, iriver, rocbox, and a sansa. Looking back i wish i had just folded. This of course was when i was a serious anti apple guy.

And yes it was the iphone that changed my mind about apple.
