Sony's Playstation 3 Movie Download Service to Launch this Summer
We had a rumor about this news back in April but as part of a new corporate Strategy Update, Sony has just confirmed it: video downloads will come to the PS3 "this summer". That's first in the US, with a Europe and Japan roll-out later in the year. Plus, Sony will expand the service across their other video-enabled products, which means the PSP and video-enabled Walkmen. There're some other interesting snippets in there too: like the fact that by 2011 90% of Sony electronics will be "network-enabled and wireless-capable." Read on for the full press release. More »

Firefox 3 Available Now (Go Set a World Record!)
Firefox 3 is finally available, which means you should go download it. They're trying to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours, so if you're at work, go to everyone's cube and download FF. Even if your office computers are locked down and can't use FF, just download it anyway. If you're at school, in a computer lab, download it there too. Make your parents download it. Rumor Smashed: Nintendo DS Not Getting Downloadable Full Version Games
Nintendo's just dropped the hammer on the NYT story saying the Nintendo DS will get full versions of downloadable games. Turns out that it's not true, and they were just thinking of the old DS getting demos via the Wii. The Ninty says these demos will be playable just like a normal game (but won't have all the content, of course) after you download it, but will be erased once the DS is turned off! [NYT]

Digital Distribution Tangling Up Writers Guild of America Talks, Strike Looms
In case you were unawares, the contract between Hollywood producers and the Writers Guild of America was supposed to expire a few hours ago, leading to a possible strike, meaning bad things could happen. One of the major issues is digital content and distribution—after getting screwed over by the terms of how they were paid from video and DVD, set many moons ago, they're leery of losing out on tons of cash yet again. Since a multitude of content is going online in an infinitude of formats—web-exclusive content, full episode replays, ARG, etc. on network websites, iTunes and the works—the terms are inevitably just as complicated. Right now, writers only get coin if a viewer pays to see the goods, making ad-supported Hulu, for instance, a black hole for them no matter how many users tune in. More »

Burn-Your-Favorite-Cult-Classic DVD Kiosk Coming To Walgreens
New ideas are needed to keep the tumbleweeds from blowing through the Walgreens photo department, and the latest is a burn-your-own-DVD kiosk, specializing in the rare and out-of-print. We were the first to report on the DVD Copy Control Association voting to approve the "DVD Download" CSS format. But many of you complained that it would require special blank discs, and would still cost the same as a download for your iPod. In this case, Walgreens would supply the special discs and Sonic burning software, and in about 15 minutes, ordinary people would get their own copies of "older and more niche content selections" that don't pay to produce down at the DVD factory. Hollywood Readying Burn-To-DVD Downloads But Do We Care?
A little birdy told us that last night, the DVD Copy Control Association met in a smoke-filled room and ratified the CSS Recordable (aka DVD Download) profile, meaning movie studios may soon release movies that you download, burn to disc and then use almost exactly like standard DVDs. It's not a new DRM—it's actually the same CSS that was cracked long ago. I assume the bare minimum requirement for this would be a hardcore broadband connection and a DVD burner, so who is the target customer? (And wouldn't they know about HandBrake?) Thanks, tipster!

Soon you'll be able to skip the lines at Korean McDonald's. Instead, just sit down, pull out your cellphone and pop in an RFID adapter to place an order. All you need is a phone that is compatible with the RFID adapter and can download the McDonald's ordering application. iPod and iPhone Media Download Kiosks Coming January 2008
Although the "upcoming" Zune music kiosk download feature seems obvious thanks to the player's Wi-Fi capabilities, being able to download music onto your iPod or iPhone on the go seems less obvious. However, 22Moo has just announced a date for their iPod- and iPhone-compatible internet kiosk station that lets you download movies, videos, games and music onto your player when you're on the go. Nokia is planning to launch a worldwide music store on August 29th. Fortune compares it to iTunes, and somehow works iPhone into the headline. Two things I notice: a) This isn't an application, it's a website. b) This is like iTunes in that you can't buy songs over the wire; you have to download them to a PC and transfer songs to a phone. What's the point of Nokia getting into this game if they're not going to allow downloads directly to handsets by WiFi or 3G? [CNN]

There's some problem with these notebooks that occasionally makes it so that your battery won't charge, won't recognize, or reports a low charge when it's fully charged and has a battery cycle count of less than 300.
