Well, if you have 10GB to spare and a DVD burner, here's how to join the Win7 party for free with Boot Camp.

Since the Windows 7 beta is free (for a time), it's also a great time to play around with Windows on your Mac via Bootcamp if you haven't done so yet (like me)—since you don't have to drop money or pirate points on a legit Vista or XP license.

SimpleHelp's guide is exhaustive, save for one little tidbit: running the 64-bit version may take a little tweaking, depending on your machine. If your machine officially supports the Boot Camp 2.1 64-bit update (any recent "Pro" model), grab that for you driver install under Windows. Recent Macbooks may also require a new video and audio driver—find them according to these instructions.

If you have a Macbook Regular or any other machine with 64-bit hardware but no official seal of approval from Apple, this thread on Mac Rumors can help you. You can also just run the 32-bit version.

The whole thing looks pretty painless, and I'm going to start it up tonight after my Time Machine backup finishes. [SimpleHelp via Lifehacker]

<![CDATA[Apple Bootcamp 1.2 Adds Vista Support, Other Things That Would Make This Headline Too Long If We Listed Them Here (Oops.)]]> In what may very well be the last update to Boot Camp before Leopard is released, this version 1.2 of OS X's dual booting software gives Vista support to eager plaid jacket fans. For people who haven't updated to Vista yet (XP users), there's also:

• Better trackpad, audio, iSight, graphics, and modem drivers
• Apple Remote support in iTunes and WMP
• System tray icon for Boot Camp info
• Foreign language support
• Apple Software Update

We've been kind of holding out on loading Boot Camp because 1) we were happy running Vista elsewhere and didn't want to downgrade to XP, and 2) it sounded too much like physical exercise. Looks like it's time.

<![CDATA[Dual Booting Vista and XP Explained]]> Our trusted first cousins at Lifehacker were able to download a copy of the publicly available Beta 2 of Windows Vista last weekend, and in a fine how-to article show you how to dual boot it with Windows XP. How they were ever able to download the file from the zoo that is the Vista download area, we'll never know. Even after repeated attempts using a variety of download managers, we had to just punt and order the DVD.

Anyway, the industrious and risk-taking Lifehackers used a copy of PartitionMagic to create a separate primary partition for Vista, and then went ahead with the install. All went well and the new OS was configured without incident, and now at boot-up, there's a choice between either Windows XP or Windows Vista.

If you're not crazy about the idea of fooling around with Beta software, Lifehacker has an upcoming series of articles through which you can live the Vista life vicariously.

<![CDATA[Windows XP On Intel Mac Booting Contest Winner Announced]]>
The prize for creating a method to boot Windows XP on an Intel-based Mac has been won. Contest organizer Colin Nederkoorn announced on his website this morning that the total prize money of $13,854 will be awarded to two California men he referred to as narf and blanka, and added that he has tested the open-source booting method and says it works. Although Nederkoorn had slight reservations about the validity of the technique earlier this week, he's now convinced. Nederkoorn told Gizmodo, Drivers are still a problem, but the basic work is done. We now have a fantastic base for an open-source EFI boot loader for the Intel Mac.

How does this technique work? You create a customized Windows XP install CD and load a special EFI bootloader. Then the magic happens behind the scenes to make everything run, Nederkoorn said.

Magic, indeed.

pu-osxthinkpad-thumb.jpgThere's been a lot of talk about whether or not a MacTel will be able to dual boot Windows and OS X, but friends of Lifehacker got OS X and XP dual-booting on an IBM ThinkPad just fine. A couple of video driver and wifi card wrinkles have to be ironed out, but otherwise the shiny round apple glows on a black IBM lappie.

pu-shovelglove.jpgWhat do you call a guy swinging a sledgehammer in his bedroom? A guy getting in shape, of course! Give a geek a rainy day that he doesn't want to go to the gym, and he'll invent home exercise equipment for "natural movements" like chopping down a tree and churning butter with a sledgehammer wrapped in a sweater. Why the sweater, you ask? So you don't hurt yourself, of course. Or the cat.

pu-geek-to-live-laptop-head.jpgBe good to your lappie and it will be good to you. Extend your laptop's battery life, save the screen from scrapes, foil thieves' evil plan to mine your data, and learn how to work offline in our compendium of must-have laptop tips.

<![CDATA[MacIntel Dual Boot? Fer Real? Not So Much]]> Looks like an intrepid haxor has dumped Vista on a MacBook by fooling Vista into thinking that the MacBook has a BIOS in there somewhere. The instructions are kind of convoluted but we encourage you to try this at home and confirm that it works. No screenshots, unfortunately.

Using the Bootable Acronis Disk Director CD on the MacBook, shrink the Mac partition. Create a new partition of type NTFS/HPFS in the remaining space. Setup a clean version of XP on a PC. Extract Boot.7z to the root drive of your XP installation.. So you have C:\Boot\ Copy bcdedit.exe to the root drive of your XP installation. C:\BCDedit.exe ...

[Thanks, Lukas]

UPDATE - This is theoretical and not tested and not real. And I was so excited.

<![CDATA[Booting XP on an Intel Mac?]]> Will you be able to dual-boot Windows XP and OS X? Well, many would agree that the likelihood of booting Windows XP on an Intel Mac is just about as certain as getting laid at the Chicken Ranch. Colin Nederkoorn of Houston, Texas decided to pledge $100 of his own money to anyone who can devise a method to boot Windows XP on an Intel Mac. He's encouraging everyone to make donations, and since he first posted the contest on Sunday (Jan. 22), the pot is over $700 at press time. The first person to e-mail complete instructions to Colin will be the winner, taking home all that moo-la. He'll post the results on his site.

How s the fund-raising process going? Colin told Gizmodo, Well, since I posted the contest it has averaged $25 per hour. I am anticipating that to spike as it gets around the net. Why did he do it? Colin explained, I had been watching the progress on message boards and saw a lot of people interested, but not a lot of progress past the early successes getting into the EFI interface. I knew there were other people willing to pay for a solution and thought an organized effort could speed up progress.

Whoa, Colin! Cool. Good luck.
