And this is why I hate the modern console -- all the drawbacks of PC gaming (buggy games requiring patches, bad drivers and firmware upgrades causing compatibility problems), none of the perks (easily-upgraded hardware, mods, variety of interfaces).
@Roy Wall: When I said "variety of interfaces", I meant hardware interfaces; keyboard, mouse, a wide assortment of gamepads, joysticks, steering wheels, assorted custom keyboard doodads, etc.
Besides which, doesn't the 3.0 firmware kill Linux compatibility on PS3?
Good point on the hard drive, though, but I crave more -- processor, graphics accelerator, memory, etc.
@HeartBurnKid: Agent of R.O.A.C.H.: No. 3.0 does not kill Linux on PS3, only on the new Slim Model. I have a fat with 3.0 and Linux :). Also, I have never really felt that my X360 or PS3 have fallen behind PC in terms of performance with high end games. Of course, that's my opinion....
As i understand it, its not 3rd party controllers at all, though i have heard it doesnt hurt to disconnnect and reconnect them, but its the Knock look alike controllers with the issue.
If you do a little looking around on youtube you can see those same controllers barely were able to connect before the patch, so i imagine its the low quality bluetooth chip in it or something.
@OPHICERMANGO: Nope, there is no way a firmware update could cause the YLOD. YLOD is similar to the RROD in that it is a hardware/motherboard malfunction which has nothing to do with the software.
@Bertone77: Software can cause hardware to fail. All it takes is a few bad lines of code and BOOM overheat. Not that it's the case with this, but just saying.
@tok3ninja: Yeah you are right in that regard, if it was just some poorly written code it could cause overheating issues but since this is just an incremental firmware update I doubt that would be the case.
Everything I've read about the YLOD had to do with the new lead-less solder Sony used with the first-gen PS3's causing the the GPU/CPU to be more prone to crack/lose connections with rapid heat up/cool down cycles. Or it will have to do with a power supply failure. I have yet to hear of YLOD caused by a GPU/CPU software bug.
I've got a launch 60gb, updated to 3.0 with no problems.
Now, if we could just have them improve those analog sticks. And then maybe offset them?
That Dualshock design is seriously outdated. I had to stop playing inFAMOUS repeatedly because my cramped hands. Can't say the same about the 360 controller.
@jeffrola: I can. I picked up a 360-for-Windows controller and the thing is clearly designed for child-sized hands. Aside from a few rare adult-sized PC controllers, the Wiimote/Nunchuk combo was the first that truly feels comfortable to use, and then mostly because the two halves are not formed into a single shell. Means I can let my arms lay wherever it feels most comfortable, and their range of motion is only slightly limited by each other (if I was useing Nyko's wireless nunchuk, they wouldn't be limited at all). I should point out that I'm half-Scandanavian with large hands and broad shoulders, so maybe it's less of an issue for scrawnier people.
The analog stick on my white one just started flaking out and getting stuck in a direction. I was shocked to learn I couldn't recenter it. What happened to the days of indestructible game hardware?
@butaneko: When were those days again? Back 2000ish I got my hands on my old Atari 2600 from when I was a kid, and found that the controllers worked for crap. Cracking them open, I discovered that all the sensor contact plates were simply taped onto the circuit board, and as the clear plastic tape degraded, some of these plates migrated to new positions where some of them were unable to register any contact, and others falsely registered contact all the time. Now, on the plus side, it was a very simple fix (Goo Gone to clean up the old residue, plus new tape to resecure the contact plates), but when friggen tape is a vital component in the construction, I'd hardly call that "indestructable".
@rolefourlife: I really liked those too. Sure, they looked like it would give you GTA hands if you played for a long time with it. But I saw a picture of it and it looked as easy as holding a steering wheel.
@deanbmmv: Your explanation produces a dangerous logic singularity, from which even remotely sensical explanations cannot escape.
I'd say the real reason was that everyone whinged about how "ugly" it was (forgetting completely that they should be staring at the screen and not the controller), combined with the fact that everyone who has a lifelong case of the Playstation Claw cannot form their hands around anything even remotely hinting at the possibility of a slightly ergonomic design.
@DoomDoomDoom: Yeah, gosh, I hate how it looks like it won't physically maim your hands like the stock PS controller grips. And the fact that the d-pad is a single rocker button instead of four independant buttons that you can't easily press at the same time, yeah, that looks pretty horrible as well. It almost makes me want to cry, it does.
And it only took House 42 minutes, 12 insults directed at Kuttner, 10 remarks about Cuddy's ass, 5 allusions to bisexuality directed at 13, and 5 glares at Forman to figure out.

No they were a cool flashy design, but a ergonomic nightmare, so they stuck with the tried n tested DualShock design.

Is a BT controller that simply works really that much of a hurdle or am I just looking in the wrong places?
03/26/09
Actually, it's one big fail. Sort of looks like the baby of a PS controller and an original Xbox controller, keeping all the ugly features.
