The new quad-core "Clarksfield" chips are the most expensive and powerful, and will be able to scale up clock speed with a feature called "Turbo Boost" that shuts down cores that aren't being used. They'll come in 1.6, 1.73 and 2.0GHz models, scalable to 2.8, 3.06, and 3.2GHZ, respectively. They'll be pretty pricey at $340, $750 and $1,000. The dual-core chips are significantly cheaper but at the expense of cache size. The quad-cores should be arriving this fall, with the first of the dual-cores hitting in early 2010. <![CDATA[Info on Intel's Dual-Core Atom 330 Processor Hits Internets]]> Last we'd heard about dual-core version of Intel's tiny Atom processor it was delayed through supply problems... but now info on Intel's Atom 330 dual-core has arrived. It's a desktop chip, with a 533MHz frontside bus and based on the 45nm process, though there's no info on its clock speeds yet. It'll be compatible with Intel's upcoming D945GCLF2 mini-ITX motherboard, a 945GX chipset/GMA 950 graphics chip board due in September, which is presumably when the 330 hits the streets too. As yet there's no news on a mobile version, bearing the letter N in its numeric title. [Reghardware]

<![CDATA[Dealzmodo: Toshiba Satellite S4527 Dual Core Vista Notebook, $650]]> Circuit City has $100 off a pretty snazzy Toshiba laptop. The S4527 laptop has a T2080 1.7GHz processor, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 120GB hard drive, CD/DVD burner, 15.4-inch widescreen, Wi-Fi, card reader and includes Windows Vista Home Premium. <![CDATA[Heated USB Slippers Go 'Dual Core']]> Technology marches on, and now even heated USB slippers have gone "dual core." Thanko now gives you an individual control for each foot with its latest USB Warmer Slippers ($33) with a two-step temperature control switch for each slipper, letting you crank up the heat on one foot while leaving your other foot lukewarm.

USB heated slippers have come a long way since their inception way back in 2005, and now there are advanced models that cover your ankles, and even have a very special bear attachment. Even so, never were they as technologically advanced as this. But jeez, who wants to be tethered to a PC like this? It must feel like a ball and chain.

<![CDATA[Azul to Launch 48-Core Vega 2 Processor]]> We've reported about dual-core and even quad-core processors, and now the pissing contest takes a geometric leap with whippersnapper startup Azul announcing plans to stoke its nex-gen Vega 2 64-bit chip with 48, count 'em, 48 cores.

Azul has made quite a splash in Silicon Valley with its first-generation Azul Compute Appliance (pictured here), a network-attached processing system that accelerates Java and lots of other stuff using the first Azul 64-bit processor packing 24 cores on board. Azul's CTO says system performance of the Vega 2 will be more than double that of its predecessor. This we gotta see.

<![CDATA[Dual Core DAP: TCLAST C150]]> Chinese company TCLAST claims its C150 is the first digital media player with a dual core chip inside. The company says the processor is specially modified to jack the signal-to-noise ratio up to 100dB. The player has just 512MB onboard, hardly enough to store a whole lot of its MPEG-1 video, and it also has an FM tuner and in-line recording. No pricing or availability was announced.

We're just not sure how much that 100dB s-to-n ratio is going to help highly-compressed MP3 files.

<![CDATA[Skype and Intel Promote Dual Core, 10-Way Calling]]> Skype and Intel are working together to offer 10-way free VoIP calling, they've announced. What s in it for Intel? The new Skype service requires Intel s dual core processors. Without a dual core processor powering your PC, 10-way calling will not function, they claim.

Nobody has, as of yet, said whether or not the 10-way calling feature is just that processor intensive, or if this is just shrewd marketing on behalf of both companies. In any event, announcements like these must have telcos getting a little nervous that they'll be losing the lucrative rural party line market. (Although if you can't pick up the phone and listen to your neighbor's conversations, half the fun of a party line is lost.)

<![CDATA[Alienwares Other-Worldly Workstations]]>
Alienware keeps on cranking out the workstations, with these two new models aimed at creative professionals, hard-core power users and film editors. The 7500i packs a single Intel dual core Pentium inside, while the MJ-12 7500a features dual-core Opteron processors. The real fun starts when you take a look at the new motherboard this thing is using. The NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 MCP features two full-bandwidth 16-lane PCI Express slots, which amounts to a veritable superhighway for a torrent of data. That motherboard also lets you plug in two graphics cards in an SLI configuration for the ultimate graphics blast, a highly sought-after capability for gamers and high-end graphics users. Keeping up with that speed are RAID-0 drives offered in configurations up to 2 TB. Keeping things quiet is Alienware's acoustic dampening option, which we've tested here and it actually works, and hardcore overclockers will like the optional liquid cooling. Rounding out the package is a workstation-class Quadro FX graphics card and more RAM than you can shake a stick at. For all that power, pricing is relatively low but could get high in a hurry as you add options, starting at $1599 for the AMD Opteron-based MJ-12 7500a, and $1789 for the Intel-based MJ-12 7500i.

<![CDATA[WidowPC: Dual-Core Laptop?]]> Now while WidowPC may not sound very familiar—they do seem somewhat reputable with their press and awards—this dual-core laptop seems like it will rock, if/when it launches. The laptop, called the Sting 917X2, is basically a generic laptop case with a motherboard that offers PCI Express, SATA, and can run Athlon 64 FX-57 or Dual Core Processors.

Currently, the DUAL CORE LAPTOP IS PREORDER ONLY. However, the only parts we are waiting on are the dual core and FX-57 chips from AMD. AMD has announced that they will have them to us in November. So, we don't know what do believe. One thing we do believe is these dual core chips are in very short supply and are like computing gold to the for those dreaming of a dual core laptop. We highly recommend preordering now if you want to be one of the first in line. Otherwise, if you order when the chips come in you are more likely to get your dual core laptop in 2006.

Looks like a good laptop, but at $3,500 for a preorder on a white-box laptop with an agreeably amazing feature-set seems a little dicey. Anybody ever order from WidowPC?

<![CDATA[Intel Releases Dual-Core Xeon CPUs Early]]> Intel's dual-core Xeon aka Paxville chips will drop later this year and not Q1 2006, as previously announced. Why? And why do we care? Well, AMD is pinching at Intel a bit with their dual-core server and desktop offerings, which makes Intel cry a little. The new chips, which will probably end up in servers first anyway, will rival AMDs already heavy dual-core Opteron collection.
