Sorry to disappoint but the Antonín Dvořák Concert and Congress Center slated to go up in the Czech Republic reminds me of some sort of microscopic life form. The unique design will feature two concert halls—a philharmonic hall and a chamber music hall that will seat 1000 and 400 people respectively. It will also feature a "first of its kind" window behind the musicians that will allow concertgoers to take in views of the park outside. While I understand that maximizing the acoustics in a building can lead to some interesting designs, I can't help but wonder if the designers from Future Systems went a bit too far here. <![CDATA[Predictable Yet Still Entertaining: John Dvorak Calls Out NYT and WSJ for Shilling Apple]]> Yes he does. Every Apple launch, at least one tech journalist goes meta and calls out other journalists for being Apple shills. Meanwhile, PC Mag gives the iPhone a 4/5 rating with Editor's Choice, John likes Macs, and there's an icon on his column for "More iPhone coverage". Oh people, don't you know he's just getting you riled up to get attention and links?...I guess that worked. Man, the guy is a genius. [PC Mag]

<![CDATA[Question of the Day: What Type of Keyboard Is the Best to Use?]]> After reading some of your comments in my review of the Das Keyboard Professional, it got me thinking about the countless keyboard variations out there and the differences between the QWERTY and Dvorak layouts. So the question today is simple—what type of keyboard is the best to use?

<![CDATA[Dvorak Warns of Impending Web 2.0 Bubble, Pees His Pants]]> If there's one thing John C. Dvorak knows, it's how hard it is to come up with a strong opinion on a unique subject for a column every week. Hey, it's OK, Dvorak! You can't win 'em all! This week, he shrilly warns us of the impending "Web 2.0" bubble. His reasoning? There have been bubbles in the past. Don't you remember?! And this one is going to be even worse. Sorry Dvory, but I call bullshit.

Call me a skeptic, but I don't see this bubble growing to the point of the initial dot-com bubble. I mean, can you really imagine the stock market going crazy over a bunch of IPOs of Facebook clones? Sure, there are a lot of crappy ideas getting funding right now just because they say "social networking" or "user generated content" in their business plans, but it takes more than new sites being launched to make a bubble.

The interesting thing about these types of sites is that it's really easy to see if they're going to take off relatively soon. If a site doesn't have any users, it doesn't have any content and is therefore useless. If it's loaded with people, then it'll be successful. No one is going to get excited about an IPO of a mediocre site with 250 users. Go back to complaining about the iPhone, Dvorak. [PC Mag]

<![CDATA[Dvorak Uses Mac, Likes it, Recommends it to Friends]]> John C. Dvorak, the man Mac users love to hate, has used a Mac. His verdict? He actually likes it quite a bit. After using the iMac for a project for some unnamed company, he found that they're very quiet, "slicker" than PCs, and has a feeling of being faster and more solid than Windows. Shock horror!

He also says he's going to recommend the Mac platform to friends and family when they ask for computer advice in order to not have to tech support them when they don't keep their computers clean of viruses and spyware—something we're intimately familiar with ourselves. In the end, he says he won't switch to a Mac (understandable), but says the differences between Macs and PCs are very minor, save for usability. Sounds pretty level headed to me. [PCMag]

<![CDATA[Dvorak Compares iPhone to Hitler]]> There's no question that our buddy Dvorak hates the iPhone, but comparing it to Hitler? I knew Hitler. Hitler was a friend of mine. The iPhone is no Hitler.

Hitler comparisons aside, John's basing at least part of his hatred on the iPhone on his two buddies who talk about the iPhone nonstop (not me, unfortunately). But most of his diatribe is directed toward the media, who are covering the crap out of the iPhone because 1) there's no other news, and 2) the iPhone is the news. That, and because he wants more pageviews.

<![CDATA[Rumor: iPhone Battery Craps Out After 40 Minutes]]> John C. Dvorak clearly has it in for the iPhone. Aside from suggesting Apple should pull the plug on the holy gadget, he's also "leaking" info from a Cingular rep who claims he's testing the iPhone and complains that its battery dies after 40 minutes.

According to mystery Cingular man, "there's lots of issues" with the phone and the interface screws up all the time. The battery part I'll buy. The fact that the interface screws up all the time, meh, it doesn't sound very Apple-y, but if true that means they got about two months to get things straight.

<![CDATA[Dvorak Isn't Drinking the iPhone Kool-Aid, Thinks Apple Should Can the Device]]> Cheers, John C. Dvorak. I will clank my anti-iPhone Kool-Aid with you. In Dvorak's latest MarketWatch column he boldly goes where very few technology journalists go. He declares war on the iPhone and suggests that Apple should pull the plug on the gadget before it is too late.

The Cranky Geek makes a good point that Apple's past successes have been in emerging markets. He goes on to say that to use the patented Apple flashy design and jazzy advertising in an extremely robust cellphone market may not work so well and will end up hurting Apple's reputation. If you recall, Apple hasn't had a true flop for quite some time and the iPhone may be just what the doctor ordered. Dvorak still shows love for Apple, though. He would rather see the iPhone as a "reference design" created by Apple and dumped onto another sucker willing to tackle it, like Samsung, he suggests.

Good luck, Apple. Dvorak and I think you will need it. Now pardon me while I go skipping down the street, hand-in-hand, with my eternal lover, John C. Hudson Dvorak.

<![CDATA[Dvorak's Love Note to the Wii Inspired By College Bowling]]> Did you know John Dvorak of PC Mag (and crankygeeks) loves PC FPS games and dislikes regular console games? Oh yes. It wasn't until Nintendo's Wii came out that he was convinced to give console gaming another shot. The reason, surprisingly enough, was the Wii Sports Bowling.

Dvorak was on the varsity bowling team at Berkeley (they disbanded by the time I got there, fifty years later) and enjoys Wii sports for its realism. You wouldn't think that a bowling game with cartoonish Miis would have realism, but Dvorak attests to it.

In the end, he says the novel control scheme will be enough to make Wii a revolution. We just hope he takes care of that sore shoulder by the time we're on his show next.

<![CDATA[Watch Gizmodo's Jason Chen on Cranky Geeks Thursday]]> Hey all! I, JC of Gizmodo, am going to be on John C. Dvorak's internet TV show Cranky Geeks 11 a.m. PDT tomorrow, Thursday, August 24. If you're not familiar with the show, it's a bunch of writers and editors from PC Mag, CNET, and Ziff Davis being cranky with Dvorak. Fun times.

We're going to be talking about topics ranging from the PS3 not being in production yet, to Apple firing its own workers for downloading Leopard off the internet. All stuff we talk about here on the Giz. Our buddy Nick Douglas from Valleywag was on the show back in June. Watch tomorrow as I chat it up with three guys twice my age.
